I thought it would be lovely to share tracks that people feel reach them in a spiritual way. 🙂

I'd like to start with this:

@Lessstressedhemum, yes, just listened to the actual lyrics of Mring Me to Life and I agree. However, I still not quite over the horror of it being overplayed everywhere (..and that I thought the band was called 'Lemon Essence initially!) 😂

I always liked this though. 😁

I love Tears of the Dragon as well.

Bring me to Life by Evanescence is striking me as very spiritual these day, now I've got over the horror of it being played on repeat all through my older boys' teenage years at the height of Evanescence's power.

Have you seen the women and Heavy metal thread.

off to see Bruce Dickinson in May - can’t wait!

yes it certainly was over played! But a fantastic song, love Amy’s voice

Lessstressedhemum · 16/01/2024 18:22

@Kdtym10 , I haven't seen that, no. Where is it. Though, I might be older than everyone else. I started with rock and metal in the late 70s. I was a "hair metal" kinda gal🤣

Not be a broken record or anything, but Dan Vasc does a fabulous cover of Bring Me to Life. It broke the Lemon Essence (🤣🤣🤣) curse for me, finally because it's very different from the pretty wet original.

Hopefully this works

Dan Vasc is just incredible isn’t he, I would say he’s one of the best young metal singers out there. Really positive attitude too.

Heavy metal is age blind -just full of lovers of great music!

ive loved it since the 80s

Women and Heavy Metal | Mumsnet

Having come across some v misogynistic attitudes across social media on heavy metal boards I thought I would start a thread were is women fans of all...

He's one of the best singers and vocalists I have ever heard, to be honest. So, so versatile. A huge amount of training, practice and hard work. I actually prefer his covers to the originals most of the time and I love his operatic voice. O Holy Night made my Christmas! And I like the way he's open about his faith. Very refreshing in a young man.

I will pop onto the hm thread. No one in my real life circle is the least bit metal except my DD, who has very broad musical tastes. So, it'll be nice to talk to other people about things.

Kdtym10 · 17/01/2024 06:38

Yes I think there’s lots of people who maybe don’t know that many people listening to metal in real life.

At the risk of turning this into a Dan Vasc appreciation thread his cover of sound of silence was incredible

@weegiemum lovely lyrics to that song. 🙂

@Kdtym10, yes, certainly inspirational - gets the message across well. Break the silence!

@Kdtym10 , that's what we need. A Dan Vasc appreciation thread. And then a separate one for his hair!

Wouldn't that be awesome. But he doesn't seem minded to leave Brazil, sadly. I'd sell a kidney to see him live.

Away from the glorious Dan, I have always found great comfort in Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Aretha does a magnificent version.

You mean Jerusalem?

I don't like his version.
I prefer traditional like Harry Seacombe.

Fair enough. I absolutely abhor what Parry’s version has become. As a massive fan (and amateur scholar of Blake’s work) this nationalistic take on Blake’s wonderful words of international and external revolution, internal alchemy and externally the artists rising up against the hirelings in the camps and universities. The preface to Milton, the raising up of imagination to reach eternity.

I can confidently state Blake would have been horrified at people like Seacombe belting it out on that means of bringing the dark satanic mills into peoples living rooms.

The jingoist overtones that have now been attached to the song would equally have horrified Blake, as indeed it did Parry who gifted the song to the Women’s suffrage movement (thankfully keeping its connection with revolution).

Pretty sure Blake would have preferred Dickinsons version as bringing out more of the true meaning of the words.

But I’m a bit of a Blake purist.

The poem is .. and did those feet in ancient times- it is the preface to the poem Milton. Blake’s poem Jerusalem is an entirely different piece of work. So I did mean .. and did those feet in ancient times. Re the poem.

Here’s some interesting background re Parry’s setting https://aspectsofhistory.com/the-fight-for-parrys-jerusalem/
