I thought it would be lovely to share tracks that people feel reach them in a spiritual way. 🙂

I'd like to start with this:

@Lessstressedhemum, yes, I think it is good to be challenged sometimes. That track makes me think of how things would be without any good present.

This challenges me. (Song starts at 1:50, I just really like this performance).

Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, by Tchaikovsky, the version by the USSR Chamber Choir, directed by Valeri Polyansky.

Also, Symphony No 3, by Henryk Gorecki.

@mathanxiety, glorious!

What do you get from them (snd the tune generally)?

@Kdtym10, that's a difficult one...the melody I found to be quite uplifting but I didn't really completely understand the lyrics or any translations I attempted to find.

References to 'alewife' (female brewer) and Tallistan (hidden place) speaks of creation/creative forces - life. And then a bit at the end translated as desires, fathers and sensuality. So it makes me think of fertility and creation of life, I think. I suppose that's where the union / unity comes in...

Not immediately accessible though, hence I thought of layers of concealed meanings.

Yes I think it’s deliberately vague to allow personal interpretation and ultimately everything divine is unknowable.

it does remind me of perhaps the most famous cathar hymn

Patrick Lenk does some amazing interpretations of traditional music.

Chant of the Gnostics: Lo Boier - Cathar Music - Gnostic Chant - Gnosticism - Catharism - Le Bouvier

"Lo Boier" is a mysterious Chant left for us by the Gnostic Cathars, when they were killed and annhiliated by religious powers in the 13th/14th century. It i...

@Kdtym10, that Cathar hymn is hauntingly beautiful! Sad but athe same time peaceful. The spiritual symbolism of planting, rest, food, water and the witness of other people reminds me of how spiritual symbolism can permeate ordinary life without the need for great pomp and ceremony.

ultimately everything divine is unknowable.

So why do we strive in and attempt the studying of it?😉 Joking aside, I know what you mean. Summed up nicely for me with these two pieces of scripture. 🙂

"12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." (1 Corinthians 13:12)

"2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." (Colossians 2:2-3)

@Kdtym10 , that is unutterably beautiful.

What happened to the Cathars just shows the horrors that can be enacted by men in the name of a God whose gospel is love and peace. The glass the church saw through all those centuries ago was very very dark.

Something a bit different. You need a wee bit of time for this one. I used to sing solo in this before I had children and I've always thought it was beautiful. Kodaly is a very unrated composer, I think.

Wow very powerful I esp love the Kyrie and Agnus Dei.

Re choral works, I love John Rutter’s Requiem and prefer it to Faure’s (probably makes me some kind of philistine 😂)

Lessstressedhemum · 23/01/2024 17:06

@Kdtym10 , Rutter's Requiem is glorious. I've never sung it, I have sung both Kodaly's and Faure's many many times. Tbh, I love a good requiem. I do realise how inappropriate that is, though.

I really, really love Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, too. It is so spiritual and powerful. It really touches the soul. This is a short extract to give anyone not familiar a wee taste. I could listen to Samuel Mariño all day. His voice is so beautiful and unusual. A true gift from God (just like Dan's voice, although in a totally different way!)

Wow, I’m not familiar with this, his voice is like glass, beautiful and unbelievably smooth and controlled!!

I love Dan Vascs hallelujah chorus

Lessstressedhemum · 23/01/2024 18:52

@Kdtym10 , so do I, but then I've never heard Dan do something I didn't like.
I find his version of Sleeping Sun so very beautiful and moving.

heyhohello · 23/01/2024 19:38

This track never fails to move me. There are so many people who need a bit of support and kindness but sadly don't receive it:

My son loves singing this with me top volume in the car. Such a feminist. But I love the sense of history

Oh don’t get me started on Nightwish- they’re just divinely inspired. (Even if they have a perch any for quoting Richard Dawkins😂)

Penchant not perch any lol.

Lessstressedhemum · 24/01/2024 00:31

@Kdtym10 , love a bit of Nightwish, but I much prefer Floor to Tarje, controversially enough. But then I think Tommy Johansson is very overrated as a vocalist as well. Brilliant musician but not all that on vocals.

Lessstressedhemum · 24/01/2024 00:31

Sorry, I didn't mean to detail the thread.

Floors my favourite too.

Speaking of Savaton (well I guess not anymore) their cover of motorheads 1916 is heartbreaking -esp the line “I cried for my mother, she never came” talk about the fultility of never ending nature of war

I love that Sabaton video. Shows the futility and heartbreak of war so well.
