how do atheists justify having children?

Sorry if the question sounds banal... but it seems easier to rationalise having children if you think your children do the right thing mostly in life they'll end up beyond the pearly gates...

>Perhaps OP means how do atheists feel about producing a child that they are condemning to death? Because all our children will eventually have to face death - that is inescapable. Whereas Christians believe that is simply their passage to eternal unity with God.

more or less...

I'm quite at peace with the fact of my own mortality. All living things must die, it'd be rather impractical if they didn't. Even for my children, this is no bad thing.

orwellwasright · 06/06/2022 21:32

I think it's so they have something to eat when the food runs out.

StaunchMomma · 06/06/2022 21:32

This is some next level batshittery right here 😂

katepilar · 06/06/2022 21:32

you dont need justify having children. its not a bad thing. its a natural thing for a human being, or any living creature, to want to have offsprings.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 06/06/2022 21:33

What!?

onthefencesitter · 06/06/2022 21:34

the country with the largest population in the world, China is largely atheist. yes they have smaller families due to after effects of 1 child policy but they are still having babies (or there wouldn't be 1.4 billion people!)

I am Jewish but my DH is atheist (albeit culturally jewish). We both want to have a baby !

EnjoythemoneyJane · 06/06/2022 21:26

”perhaps nothingness” 😂

Yes, nothingness! The same nothingness as before any of us were born. An absence of consciousness, nothing to be afraid of. The chances of any of us being here at all are billions to one and driven entirely by biology and hormones. The fact any of us get a life at all is a privilege. There’s fuck all before or after, and what you make of it while you’re here is down to the individual .

Are you American?

Bravo.

RhubarbFairy · 06/06/2022 21:35

@EnjoythemoneyJane That might be the best and most sensible thing I have ever read on MN. Thank you.

(I have screenshot it to keep when this thread goes poof)

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 06/06/2022 21:35

😂 I love this logic - so atheists shouldn’t have children because they don’t believe in a higher being? Do you think that atheists are just living very colourless, directionless lives and take no joy from anything as there is no point ? I do think the op is either drunk/ high/ trolling all of us here but let me just say that there are plenty of religious people who are guilty of being shitty parents and using religion to justify abuse.

absurd statement that is just beyond ignorant. Love to know what else atheists shouldn’t do!

MyneighbourisTotoro · 06/06/2022 21:35

why do animals reproduce? They don’t believe in a higher being or have a faith, it’s a natural instinct to want to reproduce, it has nothing to do with religion.

orwellwasright · 06/06/2022 21:36

OP, why do you think animals reproduce? AFAIK, theism hasn't yet been detected in animals so what's their justification?

So once you've answered that, apply that same reasoning to humans. Who are animals after all.

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/06/2022 21:36

Impressively crackers. You win the site tonite.

How do Catholics justify following a religion full of pedophile priests and a"god" that allows children to suffer

Picksomethingatrandom · 06/06/2022 21:36

Because contraception turned out to be less than 100% effective.

If you need a deep an existential answer, because once I (and they) die, I like the idea of all my atoms being returned to the universe to go into another form in future.

godmum56 · 06/06/2022 21:37

and we have a weird question of the year winner!

I think the bonking is the natural instinct...babies are a side effect Grin

I left when I married a Jewish guy. I had doubts for a long time and the paedophile scandals sealed the deal. The thing is; it is not as easy to leave a religion as many think; my parents are still in denial that I am no longer Catholic! I suspect many people I know stay with the church out of loyalty/comfort.

ItsLisaLou · 06/06/2022 21:39

Good question OP.

In my case it wasn’t my fault - last year I tragically tripped over and all my clothes fell off in the process. My husband was, unfortunately, coincidentally naked and directly beneath me at the time. Wouldn’t have dreamed of having kids otherwise.

PeopleRStrange · 06/06/2022 21:39

So to take this to its logical conclusion, you are shagging/procreating to populate “beyond the pearly gates”? Why? And how may children is enough, when do you stop?

This has to be a troll post surely, so bizarre

orwellwasright · 06/06/2022 21:39

I go to church. I'm very pro religion. But I can't be doing with the stupid ones.

Like the evolution denier who said 'Of course humans aren't descended from apes. If they were there'd be no apes left' like it was some insightful gotcha rather than a load of insane bollocks.

Applegreenb · 06/06/2022 21:40

I think an atheist who does the right thing and has morals is a better person than anyone religious.

If someone religious is doing the right thing based of being bribed into that with the pearly gates rather than their own morals im not sure that makes you a good person. However being good for no other reason for than being good, surely that’s better?

PatAndFrank · 06/06/2022 21:40

I try not to think of my DCs dying - what happens to me is down to me being the person I am and I hope I’ve installed enough sense in my DCs that they lead law abiding fruitful lives

Greensleeves · 06/06/2022 21:40

Satan told us to do it, OP. He wants us to outbreed you.

SexyLittleNosferatu · 06/06/2022 21:41

So religious people have children because they believe that a mythical pixie in the sky will let them live in his cloud palace forever and ever and ever after they die?
