how do atheists justify having children?

Sorry if the question sounds banal... but it seems easier to rationalise having children if you think your children do the right thing mostly in life they'll end up beyond the pearly gates...

Because having children is an amazing adventure and a good way to enjoy life, they aren't a down payment on the next life 😁.

DeanStockwelll · 06/06/2022 21:11

I have just asked my cat if he is a atheist , after I explained what a atheist was he said he didnt know , but would now consider the whole god / heaven / hell thing before he goes out and jumps on the sexy kitten he has had his eye on for the past few days

TeeNoG · 06/06/2022 21:11

@Onionpatch

"For the company really."

😂

SNAFU247 · 06/06/2022 21:11

Genuinely don't understand the question at all. The two aren't mutually exclusive in any way?

Had children because I wanted them and I knew I could give kids a good life. They equally enhance my life in so many ways. I don't believe there's anything after death so my life is just about being happy as we can be in life and my kids are a big part of that for me.

WTF

Don’t really see what point you are actually making or what atheism has to do with children.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 06/06/2022 21:12

I'd rather be an atheist than believe in a crazy lunatic god who causes innocent children to die horrible deaths.

Pearly gates 😄 oh do behave

Anonymouseposter · 06/06/2022 21:12

No-one has to justify their decision to have children.
I am not an atheist btw.
I fail to see how belief in God or lack of belief in God is related to having children.

mummabubs · 06/06/2022 21:12

I'm so confused 😂 I am an atheist (although was religious when younger) and am also a mother. It would make just as much sense for me to say "how do Christians justify having children when they know if their children do sin they might end up in the firey pit below?"

Honestly.

Why do religious people have children when they believe there is a chance they could end up in eternal torment in hell? 🤷‍♀️

Babdoc · 06/06/2022 21:13

Perhaps OP means how do atheists feel about producing a child that they are condemning to death? Because all our children will eventually have to face death - that is inescapable. Whereas Christians believe that is simply their passage to eternal unity with God.

>So they have a happy life?

That's not guaranteed of course.

>Why the need for anything after?

But atheists don't have the doctrined belief in their being some good after - perhaps "nothingness"...

Atheists don't need a belief in a hereafter in order to have kids. My DH has kids because he wanted to raise a family.

heyitsthistle · 06/06/2022 21:14

What is it with the large number of pointless, boring threads today?

Squaffle · 06/06/2022 21:14

Huh? Are you quite well?

SarahProblem · 06/06/2022 21:14

I think the real question is "How does Jobhunter7 justify posting this shit?"

Yep.

Don't believe in 'heaven' or 'hell'

EnjoyingTheSilence · 06/06/2022 21:15

Why do some religious people only do good things to please their Deity or to be able to go to the good place in their religion. Surely you should do good things because it’s the right thing to do.

I disagree!

OlympicProcrastinator · 06/06/2022 21:17

So you have children so that when they die they can go on to happiness or maybe burn in hell? THATS your justification for bringing them into this life?

It seems much better not to be religious and give the gift of enjoying THIS life as much as possible, purely BECAUSE that’s all we’ve got. If we went on and on….well there isn’t a lot of point doing anything much if life is infinite.

Worldwide2 · 06/06/2022 21:18

Your being ridiculous. Or your drinking.

wellhelloitsme · 06/06/2022 21:18

I'm excited to be a parent and to aim to raise my child/ren to be decent, kind people who make a positive difference to the world and the people around them because they want to, not because I think, or they think, that they'll be rewarded for doing so in the afterlife or punished for not doing so in the afterlife.

Is that ok with you?

Regularsizedrudy · 06/06/2022 21:18

Why do religious people have children when they could end up damned for all eternity in hell fire?
