how do atheists justify having children?

Sorry if the question sounds banal... but it seems easier to rationalise having children if you think your children do the right thing mostly in life they'll end up beyond the pearly gates...

RealBecca · 06/06/2022 20:55

TimeSlipMushroom · 06/06/2022 20:55

So they have a happy life? Why the need for anything after?

MiniatureHotdog · 06/06/2022 20:55

Huh?

Skinnermarink · 06/06/2022 20:55

Isaidnoalready · 06/06/2022 20:55

AntiHop · 06/06/2022 20:55

Huh?

mommandme · 06/06/2022 20:56

I had children because I wanted them. Why on earth would I need to justify my choices to anyone else? An odd question.

Well I dkdon'believe in heaven or hell so it's not something that has ever come into the equation.

I believe that we have one life, and how we choose to live it is up to us. My job as a parent is to give my children a good life, and the tools for them to live their own good life.

IncessantNameChanger · 06/06/2022 20:57

Same as any other mammal. A strong instinct / urge to pass on your dna driven by hormones.

Much like all life on earth. Plants and viruses dont go to heaven either but there you go, reproduction eh?

LostAndLonely2022 · 06/06/2022 20:57

I don't need to justify it.

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 06/06/2022 20:57

I’m atheist. I don’t feel the need to justify having children. Does anyone need to justify why they have children?

TheSpottedZebra · 06/06/2022 20:57

Yikes, my typing Shock

That of course said I don’t believe in...

Ashton22 · 06/06/2022 20:58

You shouldn’t only be doing the right thing because you want to go to heaven, just should just be a decent person 🙄

Trulyweird1 · 06/06/2022 20:58

Not sure I follow - do people rationalise having children ? Isn’t it just an instinct?

BTW I do not have children, but I am an atheist, so probably have no business commenting. I did not consider the one to have much to do with the other though.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 06/06/2022 20:58

Sorry - how are these two things related?

HappyHappyHermit · 06/06/2022 20:58

Atheists usually don't believe in a God, not children.

BlobbyBlobster · 06/06/2022 20:59

I don't feel i need to justify to anyone why I chose to have children.

In terms of being an atheist though, I have been brought up to be a good person and live it as fulfilling as possible. Not for a 'reward' (pearly gates) at then end of it, just to try make the most out of the life I have got.

I'm hoping that I am raising my children how I was raised, be good to people, try make the best out of things but not to expect something in return for it, just to be a decent human being .

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 06/06/2022 20:59

I wanted to have children, that's how I justify it.

And, as an individual member of a species, it was my purpose to reproduce.

RhubarbFairy · 06/06/2022 20:59

Put the gin down.
