Middle Aged Women and Psychics

Just an observation. When you see these mediums/psychics the audience is predominately middle aged women? Why is this sort of belief more commonly found amongst that age/gender?

excellent research there op

NotDavidTennant · 16/12/2017 12:28

There's a lot of research showing that (in Western countries at least) women are a lot more likely to be religious than men. I would guess that this probably also carries over to more general spiritual beliefs, like belief in the afterlife and in the existence of psychic mediums.

Vitalogy · 16/12/2017 12:36

Do you have an open mind about Santa? Is there really a Santa delivering presents by sleigh on Christmas Eve? If you don't believe it's a possibility and have a closed mind, how have you decided it's not real.^^ I have certain views about life/the afterlife so anything to do with that I'll have an open mind about. As far as I'm aware Santa hasn't anything to do with this subject matter.

SeaWitchly · 16/12/2017 12:38

lykk: Just because both you and your daughter are avid gossips and enjoy discussing relationships in fine detail it does not necessarily follow that all women are like this.
For what it’s worth I could also give you examples of men (heterosexual) who enjoy gossipy conversation and discuss their social lives in great and personal detail.

headinhands · 16/12/2017 12:38

It's just an observation that it's heavily women of a certain age. I've yet to see an audience where it's mainly male.

lijkk - sorry!

ScreamingValenta · 16/12/2017 12:41

It's not something I would ever do - however, I wonder if the age factor (if this is correct) is linked to this being a stage in life in which people often lose their parents, and so are vulnerable to those who claim to be able to 'communicate with the spirit world'.

haveyouseemyhamster · 16/12/2017 12:41

I wonder if women make up a larger percentage of audiences generally?

headinhands · 16/12/2017 12:41

As far as I'm aware Santa hasn't anything to do with this subject matter.

But he's a supernatural entity

So you have an open mind about any belief anyone says about afterlife. If someone said they believe we all turn into purple spotted unicorns after we die would you have an open mind about it? See the problem I have with the open mind mantra is if you believe theory a may be possible without any reason you also have to believe ALL theories are possible in terms of intellectual continuity.

however, I wonder if the age factor (if this is correct) is linked to this being a stage in life in which people often lose their parents,

So why is it mainly female.

OP posts:

I wonder if women make up a larger percentage of audiences generally?

But the ratio is massively weighted in number of females.

OP posts:
headinhands · 16/12/2017 12:45

women are a lot more likely

So why it is it women of a certain age?

OP posts:
ScreamingValenta · 16/12/2017 12:46

@headinhands - I really don't know, it isn't something I have researched. I was just suggesting something that might explain one part of your observation.

haveyouseemyhamster · 16/12/2017 12:53

Dont know how reliable this research is regarding gender representation in the theatre, but it states that 'Female customers account for 65% of ticket revenue'

Older women will generally have more disposable income to spend than younger women.

haveyouseemyhamster · 16/12/2017 12:53

Santa is no more supernatural than the Easter bunny

Vitalogy · 16/12/2017 13:04

I don't know all the ins and outs of Santa, as far as I'm aware it's a children's story based on Saint Nicholas isn't it. Whether he existed or not I don't know.
With regards to my views on the soul/source, I've used myself as the measure. I can't show you how I've measured it, the only way you'll know is if you measure it yourself. That's all any of us can do to know our truth.

Vitalogy · 16/12/2017 13:07

OP, you've had a broad range of theories and ideas as to why the audience is made up like this. What's your conclusion?

headinhands · 16/12/2017 13:26

Still not sure. I suppose in a way I'm disappointed, in one way it makes me feel that women are more gullible 😕

OP posts:
Vitalogy · 16/12/2017 13:48

Ok then. Would you agree in general that women are more intuitive? Because I definitely think they are.
These audience will be made up of all sorts of women, those that think it's true, those who are curious and others will be going just for a bit of entertainment. Plus others being dragged along with a mate. Either way, I wouldn't like to dismiss middle age women going to these events as gullible.

headinhands · 16/12/2017 14:06

I think women are socialised to monitor the emotions of people around them more than men, I don't think there's some innate gift that women posses.

OP posts:
headinhands · 16/12/2017 14:08

I wouldn't like to dismiss middle age women going to these events as gullible.

Neither do I but the audience demographic speaks for itself.

OP posts:
haveyouseemyhamster · 16/12/2017 15:15

op women make up a larger demographic of all theatre audiences.

Vitalogy · 16/12/2017 15:17

to monitor the emotions of people around them I believe there's a lot more to it than that but I'll have to agree to disagree on the matter.

Vitalogy · 16/12/2017 15:31

The thing is, you've been watching these programs on the TV, many times by the sounds of it, observing or what ever else you're doing, maybe most of them are just doing the same.

Watching other women and criticising isn't very productive is it. Or is it to make yourself feel better about the kind of woman you are. Are you middle aged or coming up to this stage in life, thinking, sh*t, you wouldn't catch me carrying on like that.

Do you think these women are letting the side down some how. You sound like you want men and women to be one homogenised group.
