Middle Aged Women and Psychics

Just an observation. When you see these mediums/psychics the audience is predominately middle aged women? Why is this sort of belief more commonly found amongst that age/gender?

Trapped between the generations, caring for elderly parents soon to go (& their generation), reminder that they, too, will one day pass out of the lives of their children.

headinhands · 16/12/2017 09:24

But why is it predominately women?

OP posts:
annandale · 16/12/2017 09:24

It's marketed to them.

Nyx1 · 16/12/2017 09:26

Where did you get figures for this OP? Or do you go to psychic eats or something?

I've been curious about those for years, like since I was a teen but never been to anything.

Women do most the caring in families, did you not know that, OP? I don't give a Fig what MNers say, women have brains that make us care more than men do about relationships and want to nurture them. These events are mostly about talking to deceased relatives, relationships folk still want to nurture.

I went to one event (helped put it on, fundraiser). It was very much like a church service. Boring. And yes, very female audience.

headinhands · 16/12/2017 09:41

Where did you get figures for this OP?

Just looking at the audiences.^ It's hard not to notice.^

But most women don't go to them.

I can't agree with that. There may be a socialising effect but no evidence of a physical reason why it's usually the women that write out cards.

I wonder how many go for a laugh, though? I'm middle aged and at that age where life has got to samey, I get a real urge to try new things, however daft. Loads of my friends think it would be a laugh to go to a psychic service. Not been yet but we will. And I know a few people who go for research into books they're writing. I bet a chunk of every audience is just entertainment and curiosity not faith.

Interesting that you say it's like a church service

I was going to the local spiritualist centre but it says it's a Christian spiritual centre and that put me off

I don't want to sing hymns. I'm just interested in the spiritualist side of things.

headinhands · 16/12/2017 09:46

Why isn't it equally men and women?

Yes, very much like a church service, in reverential sombre tone & a touch of happyclappy. Nothing creepy, thank goodness, I hate suspense or peril.

"oxytocin and vasopressin have been found to affect males and females differently in animal studies"

Male-female brains tend to be different, not least because of our different (sex-determined) hormone cocktails.

I'm sitting at dinner table other night & DD (16yo) excitedly describes social highlights of her day & events in her circle of friends. She's shared like this her whole life. She & I avidly gossip. My husband, 3 sons & a guest boy at the table don't contribute (or care, and won't remember who said what). You blame this difference on socialisation, I credit it to biology. Although men are the WORST gossips, but they get straight to the point. Women turn over the details. Both sexes interested in everyone's relative position.

I'm not saying this is the only reason why middle age women are interested in psychics but just to add another perspective. Something I was reading about, here is copy/paste of part of the article.

Menopause represents the new phase in your life - birth into the “wise woman”. Although when the term “menopause” is mentioned, it actually includes “perimenopause” as well, because as the medical community has come to realize, the life transit that menopause represents is actually one that spans 10 years or more for many women. For most of them, hormonal shifts begin in their early 40-s or even mid to late 30-s, whether they notice them yet or not. And with this comes the energetic, psychological, and spiritual shifts that usher them into their wise woman years. In a way, it is a long and complicated transition period.

Changes to your subtle body – your chakras and energetic systems – mirror multiple changes in your physical body. In spiritual traditions that work with the chakras, working with these changes is a big part of the transition into wise woman status – they are part of what enables a shift into a new spiritual perspective and skills. Specifically, it is during this time that you are guided to revisit any themes from earlier in your lives that you have left unexamined, or any wounds you have left unhealed. If you rise to this challenge, you come to own a new relationship to your delicate body, your intuition, and your spiritual selves.

From an energetic technical perspective, this “prompting” often occurs through bursts of kundalini, or spiritual awakening energy, in your chakras. In chakra meditation traditions, ideally the kundalini is brought up gradually from the root to the crown chakra, enabling a smooth spiritual awakening process. During perimenopause, instead there are often sporadic bursts of kundalini (some even connect hot flashes to these bursts, since the kundalini rising often triggers a similar feeling of warmth or “fire”.) Just as your hormones swing during this time, so does your energetics system.

Many women experience these energy bursts as actual sensations of warmth or tingling in a part of their body associated with a chakra. If you meditate on your chakras or work with them in some other way, you may feel active energy in the chakras themselves. If not, you may not be aware of these bursts at all, but instead may see the results of them in the patterns or themes of your life during this time, because these bursts bring forth that which you are asked to heal or learn.

When the energy flows freely through your energetics system, you may experience a flowering of spiritual gifts, particularly of intuition – a key part of the wise woman archetype. Your ability to sense and connect with energies and spirit is magnified. As the reproductive aspect of your physical body winds down, the spiritual aspects of your subtle body ramp up! And this shift is something that can continue to deepen for the rest of your lives.

I think it’s because alternative “religions” which focus on spirituality and connection tend to be more accepting of women.

Churches have excluded women in the past from having any kind of power so they find it elsewhere.

Vitalogy · 16/12/2017 11:06

Well at least I've given you a laugh DontDrinkDontSmoke Xmas Grin

headinhands · 16/12/2017 11:20

But vitology why don't most women go into mediums and all that? What's happening with the women who think it's all patent guff?

OP posts:
specialsubject · 16/12/2017 11:58

Clearly anyone becoming a wise woman would not pay to go to see a charlatan.

Vitalogy · 16/12/2017 11:59

What's happening with the women who think it's all patent guff? Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Unless someone has experienced it for themselves it's understandable why they may feel this way.
How many of these psychic evenings have you attended then? Do you go out of curiosity or just for a laugh?

Vitalogy · 16/12/2017 12:01

Clearly anyone becoming a wise woman would not pay to go to see a charlatan. Are they all charlatans though?? Like I said, I've not made my mind up but I try to keep an open mind about all sorts of things.

gnomeisland · 16/12/2017 12:10

I read it as Physics and got all excited for a moment.

I went to an excellent lecture on the Physics of Light recently - very enlightening, and thought provoking.

headinhands · 16/12/2017 12:19

I try to keep an open mind about all sorts of things.

Do you have an open mind about Santa? Is there really a Santa delivering presents by sleigh on Christmas Eve? If you don't believe it's a possibility and have a closed mind, how have you decided it's not real.^^

OP posts:
haveyouseemyhamster · 16/12/2017 12:24

I'm a middle aged woman who has never been to a reading and would therefore have no idea who usually attends.
What age are you op? Presumably you go frequently.

headinhands · 16/12/2017 12:26

No I've never been but seen the audiences at these places when I've seen it on TV
