Middle Aged Women and Psychics

Just an observation. When you see these mediums/psychics the audience is predominately middle aged women? Why is this sort of belief more commonly found amongst that age/gender?

This is for Nyx1....who is Gwenda or Glenda to you, when spirit gives a name,it more often than not does not come through exactly as it is straight away, but it gives near simularities.

Do they, aye?

BertrandRussell · 30/12/2017 16:09

“That's all any of us can do to know our truth“

Truth is truth. You can’t have your own truth.

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 30/12/2017 19:12

It isn't that simple. Truth is a complex idea plato.stanford.edu/entries/truth/

SimultaneousEquation · 30/12/2017 19:13

I’ve always found that women are under-represented in physics, but as a middle-aged woman I admit to having a keen interest in the subject.

Vitalogy · 30/12/2017 19:23

Truth is truth. You can’t have your own truth. When you know yourself you can.

headinhands · 31/12/2017 12:04

When you know yourself you can

That's what's known as a 'deepity'.

'You can have your own opinions, but you can't have your own facts.'

Truth to me means what is factually correct and corresponds with reality. So, for instance, I say that a square has four sides. If anyone says it has 3 sides that would be wrong.

Without attempting to summarise a very complex area of philosophical study, we can at a day-to-day level distinguish quite easily between truth as it relates to facts - things we know to be true, whether it's that there is a cup on the table next to us or that it's not sunny where we live right now - and truth as it relates to feelings, which is of course a more subjective truth. As Pontius Pilate so lyrically says to JC in Jesus Christ Superstar: "But what is truth? Not easy to define. We both have truths. Are yours the same as mine?"

Clearly Vitalogy knows what she feels to be true - ie she truly feels it. Whether it is objectively true is a different matter and possibly impossible to prove.

Are middle aged women more gullible? They may often be more vulnerable which makes them susceptible, perhaps.

Interesting. So why aren't more women going to psychics?

Sorry, I did read the thread but may have missed if you quoted the sex breakdown for psychic visits. I wonder if the sort of women who are going to readings etc feel safer in a social reading session, where there are other people validating their experience and they can just watch rather than participate if they want.

My idea about susceptibility may be bollocks. I must say my 'truth' is that my borderline early menopause did nothing to make me 'sensitive' to paranormal activity and everything to confirm me in my scepticism and hard nosed realism.

No you can’t. Truth is not subjective.

I concur that consumers of astrology / spiritualism / mysticism / psychics / new age crap / other random woo tend to be overwhelmingly, but not exclusively, female.

My pet theory as to why this might be is education & socialisation. Men tend to be encouraged to take an interest in scientific, engineering & technical subjects which would encourage a sceptical, evidence-based, rationalist worldview.

Women, in contrast, tend to be encouraged to take an interest in arts & humanities subjects and to adopt caring, nurturing or creative roles which may create a mindset which is more likely to be accepting of claims which are not substantiated by proper evidence and data.

Yes, I'm generalising and yes I know perfectly well that there are some female physicists and some male arty types.....

I wonder, then, why the majority of females do not visit them?

OP posts:
BonnieF · 01/01/2018 21:58

I wasn't suggesting that the majority of females visit 'psychics', rather that the majority of those who do visit them are female.

headinhands · 01/01/2018 22:04

No sure. I'm just wondering why, if your theory were to stand up, wouldn't we see more of a % of females going to these psychic events? Why do so many females not ascribe to that belief if it's about pervasive socialisation?
