hello all, popping in as well, to thank everyone for their prayers and support in Feb when my friends husband died (I have no idea how to punctuate that btw). The funeral was emotionally terrible but somehow it was a lovely service. The vicar did a marvellous job emphasising his happy and fulfilled if short life, and made everyone feel better somehow, without judgement on how cruel everyone felt it was for Tim to be taken. I managed to thank him through the tears because I really really felt comforted by his words and I hope my friend was too, though I know she has been really questionning her faith, which is not at all hard to understand. His father has actually taken retirement from his parish in the light of this which is almost harder.
ANyway I'm wittering and I should be cooking the DS's tea.
Thank you.

CaptainDippy · 04/03/2007 19:01

Fab stuff lwtg - Glad church has been so good for you today - God is good, eh!!? Praying your mother's abcess heals soon - I had one about ten yrs ago and it was sooooo painful - poor mum!!

Hi pepperrabbit - Good to "see" you - So glad the funeral is all over now and that it went ok, though it must have been so incredible painful for all who knew him, esp his wife and children. Continuing to pray for them as they work through the grieving process. May God wrap them up in His love.

Must go as DD's need to go to bed and I need to go out and babysit - Soooo tired and soooo much to do before going away - Pray for calm and focus....

The book I'm reading is "Free of Charge" by Miroslav Volf. The subtitle is "Giving and forgiving in a culture stripped of grace".
It really is excellent.

I'm a little sad as I've just come off the phone to the churchwarden's wife, who was very upset. An old lady from church (who DS adored) has died suddenly. She was one of the mainstays of the church and will be sorely missed.

CD - hope you get some rest while babysitting! Shocked at you doing that when you've got enough to do! You should practise what you preach young lady!

PR - its hard and so sad yet it is important we find some understanding of God in the light of what seems pointless. So glad the service was a good one.

LWTG - as Paul said, we are all part of one body, and each of us support and gain support from the whole. Glad you felt able to go to your old church and glad that you feel it is right to be where you are as opposed to there.

RL - you don't sound at all pompous. I too find civil ceremonies soulless. I am so glad that DH and I got married in church (even though at the time I wasn't going to church much at all). It means so much to me now, that we found a priest who agreed to marry us and didn't judge us for mistakes made.

mtgaa - don't feel you've failed. We (on the course) get a week to read and think about each passage. And anyway, we all have busy lives! Don't force it, there's no rush!

Worzella - my degree is in Maths, and I work in Payroll. I don't think I could teach it, not unless I had pupils that wanted to learn! You are a brave lady! I always think teachers (good ones anyway) must have a vocation, just as much as any minister.

I had a bit of a laugh today. After church today, M. was trying to organise a "ministry team" meeting (I think this is the first one). He tried to fix it for the day/time I'd already arranged the Emmaus leader meet-up - and he found this out when he spoke to one of the pastoral ALMs (Authorised Lay Ministers - note to RL, this is ANOTHER option for you - ALM, which is a year's P/T training), who is going to lead an Emmaus session for me, and she told him she couldn't make it and why!

Oh, and back to the SOTC (Stations of the Cross) - M. said he wanted a different liturgy from last night's - so I need to do some research! There are a number of liturgies on the internet, and I have to say, with my upbringing, I've probably got more SOTC experience than he has! Just need to find something that isn't too floral... life is busy. I'm out Tuesday night for lenten talk (on SOTC, by the artist, as it happens), Thurs is a tutorial, then Saturday eve is SOTC.

Oh2 (or is that O2!), I've got a tentative date for my next sermon, the Sunday after Easter! Subject is doubting Thomas.

longwaytogoandabitfurther · 04/03/2007 21:47

really tearful tongight. When I speak to h on phone it all feels well just so distant and like i'm sounding really horrid and heartless. I know I'm just protecting myself and just trying to cope, but don't feel much of a Christian atm.

worzella · 04/03/2007 22:04

continuing to pray that you will have strength and peace LWTG..

MaryBS · 04/03/2007 22:13

LWTG - don't be too hard on yourself. If you didn't put up that shield to protect yourself, you'd fall apart.

Firstly I'm reminded of what to do on an aeroplane when the oxygen masks drop down. You put one on yourself first, and THEN see to those who look to you for support. To do it any other way is madness, and leads to all of you being in trouble.

Secondly, I just opened my bible and found this:

"The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble
And those who know your name put their trust in you
for you O Lord have not forsaken those who seek you" (Psalm 9:9-10).

and before you use those words to beat yourself up, remember the prayer of the father of the boy with the unclean spirit (Mark 9:17-29), "I believe, help my unbelief". For you have belief in Him, you just lack belief in yourself.

God bless x

MaryBS · 04/03/2007 22:18

Can I just say, its OK for me to talk , its not me going through it . I admire your faith and your dedication to God, you're coping a 100 times better than I would!

As always, you are in my prayers {hug}

worzella · 04/03/2007 22:21

Hi Marybs - slight hijack - where did you do maths? I was at Warwick (86 -89)

Hope you're doing OK LWTG

MaryBS · 04/03/2007 22:30

Hi Worzella {waves}

Brunel, 84-88, so some overlap. Especially when you consider I did my second year work place (6 months) at IBM Warwick in 86! I lived in Warwick itself for a month, then a group of us rented a bungalow in Claverdon.

pretendmum · 05/03/2007 00:26

Hi everyone, just found this thread, what a great idea!
I will pray for you all tonight before I eventually get to sleep.
I'm at university at the moment and luckily everything is going well for me.
Praying for you all xx

MaryBS · 05/03/2007 07:14

hi pretendmum and welcome! What subject are you doing? Always good to hear when things are going well.

LWTG - how are you this morning?

Notquitegrownup · 05/03/2007 09:36

Hi CaptainDippy and all you fervent pray-ers! I was thinking of this thread in my darkest hours this weekend and thought you must have either disbanded (foolish idea I know) or gone underground, eg onto msn or similar, as I had not seen you in ages. So glad to see you are still going strong.

Well, here I am again, pathetic woman that I am, dh gone away this morning for 2 weeks (longest time yet) and me already worn out from crying. As I think you know, I am not an active Christian (agnostic even) but I welcome your kind words of support.

harrisey · 05/03/2007 14:27

I havent been on here ovre the weekend and now I am in College I have access to a computer to ask you guys to pray for us. We were burgled on Friday night (while we were all asleep upstairs). We lost 2 laptops, 2 ipods, video camera, purses, wallets, bags, camera, all our DVDs and our car! as they took the car keys. THe back door was forced open and the police recko they were in and out in 5 minutes.
We can get it all replaced on insurance but it is such a hassle! Dh's passport was in the car, and we've both lost our driving licences, and all our photos and music were on the computer and ipods.
But at least we are all OK - I dread to think what would have happened if the kids had got up if they heard a noise or anything.

Church on Sunday, though, was all about where we put our trust - in things, in this world, or on God. We sang 'Blessed be your Name' for a dedication in the morning 'he gives and takes away ... my heart will choose to say, blessed be your name'. We#ll get through it , we just both feel a bit sick about it all. FOr ds it is about the most exciting thing that ever happened in his whole life. DD1 is a bit more fazed by it all and hasnt slept great the lst 2 night (I've hardly slept at all), and dd2 has been demonstrating her kung-fu moves for if they come back!!

Could you pray for peace for the whole Harrisey family. We're understandably pretty delicate right now. At least dh and I had both handed in essays on Friday!

CaptainDippy · 05/03/2007 16:18

Good to "see" you DG - Am continuing to pray for you sweetie - You are always welcome here - we all care about you!! BIG [[[[hugs]]]]

Oh harrisey - That is AWFUL - You must be feeling very, very shaken right now - Praying for you all as you get over the shock - I must say, you sound v.calm (I am sure you don't feel it!) [[hugs] So glad no one was hurt etc; but so much to loose. I know material possessions aren't everything; but really feel for you and your family right now. Praying for lots of support around you....

Still lots to doooo .....

bobsmum · 05/03/2007 16:20

Harrisey! what a complete nightmare!!! Praying for you guys - praying specifically that you get your personal stuff back Can't help with your photos, but what music/DVDs do you miss most - might be able to lend you some stuff if you want? So glad you're all physically ok although I guess it must be a bit of a weird feeling about what's happened.

Tomorrow is D-Day (Dippy day ) Pray that the Dippies have a fab break that's v v relaxing and a chance to switch off and enjoy each other. Pray also that the bobsmum household will be good hosts and not get too anxious! We're really looking forward to this week, just want everything to be perfect! (Or as close as poss )

MaryBS · 05/03/2007 17:01

Harrisey, echoing what Bobsmum and CD said. I really feel for you guys! Thank God that you are alright though (and also that you are insured!). I've been burgled and it isn't nice

PandaG · 05/03/2007 18:23

Oh Harriseys. Aagh. Praying for you, for peace and sleep. Oh what a horrid thing to happen, but yes, you are right to chose to say Blessed be your name.

Longway - praying still. Mary is right when she says you need to take care of yourself honey.

DG - will pray for peace for you while DH is away, and for no tummy bugs in the family.

Well, DH and I have managed 6 QTs now - we are not getting up at 6 on the weekend! Think I know what some of my grumpiness is about - I have been drinking too often and too much. Not dependent by any stretch, but just opening a bottle of wine too frequently. So, hold me accountable please!
I did drive the car yesterday, first time after my accident. I did it without panicking, so that is something o be thankful for.

Oh - the spa was lovely, and Worzella was fab for babysitting Saturday night!

Notquitegrownup · 05/03/2007 18:23

DG - good to see you back! I was thinking of you/wondering how you were very recently. Praying for peace for you over the next two weeks.

Prayers for peace for the Harriseys - how awful for you! Praying that you can regain your peace of mind, as well as your special things.

and prayers the Dippys and for Bobsfamily too. Hope you have a really good week and get lots of chances to relax together. Have you met before in rl, or is this a leap into the blue for you all?

God bless all.

CaptainDippy · 05/03/2007 19:25

Awwww, bobsmum - don't get too anxious - we're v.laid-back! Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow - will call later on tonight.....

She's so lovely!

Do pray for us though - two toddlers on a plane - eeeeeek!

MUST get on!! Too much to do still - eeeeek!!

Hello Mary, panda and NQSGU!!

Sure I'll pop back later ....

Hello all!

Hi Dumbledores Girl! Nice to see you!

Harrissey, what a yukky thing to happen. Someone I know is a tradesman and all of his tools (several £1000s worth) were nicked out of his van one night. Made us all v.

Well CD have a wonderful time up north! I'm ever so slightly envious!

Panda well done for getting up early! It's not easy sometimes, is it? I know what you mean about drinking too much - for me it's the one or two glasses of wine when the dcs go to bed that I want to cut back on. I've taken to elderflower presse as a v. yummy substitute! (about the same calories tho - doh!!!)

Hi PretendMum (aren't we all?!) and welcome to the thread!

Hi Mary! HOw's the essay going? Have you chosen a def. title yet? Hey, you'd appreciate this - on Sunday afternoon I kept thinking I sholud go to church for the pm service, but not to St A's - I kept thinking of the local CofE and that I should go there. So I did and it was a healing service and was so moving. I really felt it was a God-incidence and that it was His idea that I should go! It's v. different to St A's and v. high-church, and also v. inspiring with lots of experimental pm services - they're doing a different style of service every week through lent. I'm quite tempted to go back!

Also one luvverly thing was my old prayer pal from St A's who has since left and moved away got back in touch this w/e and it was so good talking to her - we were chatting on the phone for hours, and have arranged to meet up in London. I have missed her so much, so I'm really chuffed about this!

God bless!
