A new place for us to share the lovely, silly and annoying things that happen in church life and share our great love of Graham Kendrick.

So, in a change of 8 ringers, if only 2 of them are actually teaching or helping, then they would need the dbs and the others not.
But the assumption is that anyone in the change could teach or help, so that would follow that it's easier for them all to be dbs checked

niminypiminy · 23/12/2016 22:30

pklme that sounds like a lovely memory.

Am off to bed now with Christmas Day's sermon still unwritten, am hoping DH is going to take the boys off somewhere to tomorrow morning so I can get on with it. Otherwise it'll be up very early on the day.

As the wind gets up I'm starting to wonder how successful our Carol singing outside the pub will be tomorrow. Can see the singing being lost in a howling gale.

niminy if the wind is too strong you'll just have to sing in the pub Grin

amammabear · 23/12/2016 22:54

Nickel do you only have a mixed she choir then? We have a children's one and an adult one.

amammabear · 23/12/2016 22:55

Pklme usually the teacher would be opposite you, the other side of the rope- I'd be concerned about someone teaching from behind with the learner between them and the rope- that is rather beyond my limits.

Dutchoma · 24/12/2016 07:28

Our church sings carols in the pub by design.

pklme · 24/12/2016 08:12

I was probably too little- under seven. I think the plan was he'd be able to grab me if I forgot to let go...Grin
I'd forgotten all about it until now!

pklme · 24/12/2016 08:13

I fancy carol singing, in and out the pub! I'm sure it will go well regardless of weather.

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 24/12/2016 12:54

Calm before the storm here. Midnight sermon was rewritten at the crack of dawn this morning which meant I got to see the wonderful red sky around 8ish. Potential disaster averted when husband owned up to throwing away the straw for the crib scene. New straw now purchased. Just a few bits to get ready for the family feast between crib service and midnight mass and we are good to go. See you on the other side.

niminypiminy · 24/12/2016 13:14

Hope it all goes well Greenheart.

I'm off now to put candles in candle stands and practice music for the crib service and then midnight. Will finish prep for tomorrow's post-sermon activity later.

I'm going in, chaps!

I organise carolling on my estate every Christmas Eve... We start at six... Feel free to join us in spirit!

Fa la la la laaaa la la la laaaa!

Doublegloucester · 24/12/2016 18:50

Argh missed crib service due to grandparents' motorway delays! Hopefully midnighting but will defo be there tomorrow morning. No reconciliation with the in-laws yet...
Hope all your services go well folks :-)

pklme · 24/12/2016 20:27

Well done Greenheart!
Nearly there now folks...
Shame about the motorway, I sat in Bromsgrove for an hour a couple of weeks ago on M5.

Madhairday · 25/12/2016 07:54

Merry Christmas everyone! Xmas Smile

Hope everyone's services go well. Dh has two to do this morning so we were up early to do stockings and breakfast.

applesandpears33 · 25/12/2016 21:10

Happy Christmas wishes to all.

nickelbabeinamanger · 25/12/2016 21:43

amamma I don't have anything at the moment Wink
The choir at that church though has adults and juniors - all in one choir, the juniors rehearse for half an hour until the adults come in and then they go home after half an hour as full choir

EddSimcox · 25/12/2016 21:49

Happy Christmas everyone! niminy greenheart and anyone else who was working today, hope it all went well and you're starting to enjoy some time off...

I loved midnight mass last night, complete bunch of randomers in the congregation though! Saw the vicar today who said this morning was like that too... Would have liked to go this morning too but had a good day at home with family eating and drinking too much. Truce with DP. DC v happy. Bonkers DM more cheerful than tearful (just). DB and SIL on good form too. I feel a bit like I'm playing a role in some genteel but crazy family drama... 😬

nickelbabeinamanger · 25/12/2016 21:51

We went to Nice Church's stable service yesterday, which was lovely, then DH was playing for their 10pm.communion, so like an early midnight mass Grin
Really weird without a choir (so no subg setting). When I first got there I was very ill at ease because the only people I knew other than dh were vicar and asst priest! But eventually, a friend from old parish came (she's defected to Nice Church) and I sat with her (she came in with another couple I know from there). We're both trouble when we're together, very naughty Grin (we chat and aren't scared to say things as they are). But we were very good, and at the end I asked her if she wanted to do the descant for O Little Town. She wanted to but didn't know if we should, but in the end we decided to (I knew DH would play the verse straight because he never does fancy last verses, so the descant would fit) , and we did it.
It felt very naughty but fitted perfectly and as I wasn't on my own it was fab Grin

No church today but a lovely, quiet day just the 3 of us

Doublegloucester · 26/12/2016 00:23

Edd, glad to hear re Dp truce :)

Nickel jealous of your descant!! Our choir never does descants and I was desperately wanting to sing some this morning but felt silly as only descant singer in congregation so wimped out!

No in-law reconciliation here sadly. We've had a lovely day but that lack of phone call has left a sad tinge. Loved having my parents here though - great guests!

Echoing that hope for all who've had today as a working day that you get some well-deserved rest!

Dutchoma · 26/12/2016 07:26

no descants where I went either with ds. Darling granddaughter opted out of coming.
The music was a little diappointing although there was a choir, but on the whole the service was lovely.

There was on thing I had never heard of they did: they had a child bishop who was scheduled to give out the blessing at the end. She was called Kate (there is a different one each year) but she had been at midnight mass and overdone it, so had been sent home with a temperature. I didn't get to know how old she was.
The rest of the day also went very well. We played Qwirkle, it's amazing how good dgd is at it.
I think I know what you mean Edith with 'playing a role in a drama'. I think it is called: fake it till you make it. I hope the truce with DP lasts.

amammabear · 26/12/2016 10:50

Oh I do love a good descant... The key point here though is GOOD one of our top sopranos who thinks she's better than everyone else always sings them without fail, can often have interesting tuning issues and you can see half the room wincing...

She's very irritating to be honest, she often sings things wrong herself and it's impossible to correct, but insists on telling everyone else they're wrong all the time and constantly sings their parts in practice- right down to bass- even when she's the one that's wrong and not them...

Dutchoma · 26/12/2016 14:12

That is very annoying.

nickelbabeinamanger · 26/12/2016 15:56

amammabear Shock that's not good.
One of the reasons I get scared singing on my own is that I can't bear to go wrong.
One of the most important things in singing is listening.

EddSimcox · 27/12/2016 00:20

Yes I guess that's exactly it oma

amammabear · 27/12/2016 15:44

That's the thing nickel, she is very capable of singing in tune, but that would require listening to the rest of the group, which requires respecting them as equals and not assuming yippy always know better.
