Have you ever seen a ghost?

Serious question - have you ever seen a ghost? If so, why are you certain about what you saw? Could it have been a natural phenomenon? I ask because something I saw is preying on my mind. I was driving through a village on the East Sussex border one afternoon last year, thinking of God knows what, radio on, when all of a sudden the car filled with the smell of fuel (which makes me feel ill ). I then realised a plane was flying very low left to right across the road, so low that I thought it would crash. I couldn't see any markings on the plane but I remember the shape very clearly. I don't remember whether or not there was any noise, but I was so shocked I brought the car to a standstill and looked back across the road. I realised that to my right the land fell away very sharply, so it would have been possible for a plane to fly over me and then clear the trees heading off over the valley (i think) except that I couldn't see any plane. I honestly stood there and listened for an impact. I could still smell this incredible odour of aviation fuel (like when you are crossing the tarmac sometimes on a small airport and the wind catches you, only much stronger). Never thought about ghosts before, but I still wonder what exactly I saw that day.

I think there's always a rational explanation somewhere. One experience I had I couldn't find one for, however, but I still don't believe it was a ghost, in the strict sense.

cassidy59 · 13/02/2015 11:39

Gosh! I would love to see a ghost.......
I do believe in a afterlife!

IndigoBarbie · 18/02/2015 17:19

It could have been a warning of premonition

pineappleshortbread · 28/02/2015 15:41

I have once when I was a child. I was outside shouting to my nan and insane her come to the window and walk away. I went inside and asked her why she didn't come out and she said she hadn't heard me. I am adamant it was a ghost

gemsio · 02/05/2015 22:43

Yes, I never tell people for fear of them thinking I am absolutely crazy, but I saw "her" as clear as day, I was about 14 at the time. First and only time I ever have though.
Apparently my family said I went completely green afterwards, it was a bit of a shock to say the least.

Vivacia · 03/05/2015 15:32

I'm another who believes that 'seeing ghosts' can be explained by reasons other than them being the visitations of dead people.

Smorgasboard · 06/05/2015 22:35

How about it being a plane that was losing fuel so had to make an emergency landing and was already down by the time you looked to see? Sounds plausible? No crash so not newsworthy.

Yes about 24 years ago I was working a night job and gave a lift to a colleague. My car broke down opposite a cemetery on a dual carriageway. It was near midnight and a clear summer night. My friend and I had just walked about 400 yards to a phone and back to call the AA(it was before mobiles took over the world). We were leaning against my car. There was an empty field behind us. We BOTH looked over to see the 6ft iron gates of the graveyard and saw a figure of a man. He was all in black with a black hat that was flat on the top. All I can say is we both felt malevolence coming from him/it. It stared at us, couldn't have been longer than 20 seconds, then we both saw the flashing orange lights from the recovery van. When we looked back he/it had gone. There was nowhere he could have disappeared that quickly as the gates must have been at least 7 or 8 feet high and we could see they were padlocked and the wall ran for 100s of yards each side of the gates. I don't know what it was but it wasn't a human being.

chockbic · 10/08/2015 20:37

I've heard whistling and seen a bright, sideways light go through a curtain.

Freaky, whatever it was.

Ghostexperience · 10/08/2015 20:54

I have namechanged as my experience is quite outing. I was walking down one of the old main routes in and out of a city that at one time was a walled city. I suddenly had a sense of not being on the road but within a different space is the only way I can describe it. The person I was with had the same sensation and we both had the feeling to walk very fast.

Clear as day to the side of me I saw two people sat at the side of the road, a woman and a child. I just 'knew' intuitively that they were lepers.

Neither I or my boyfriend spoke to each other all the way home we only spoke about it the following morning and he sensed the feeling but had not seen the people.

I knew nothing of the history of this city but a few weeks later I saw a tv program about it and found out that the very road I had been walking down was the route that the lepers were taken out of the city walls. I just can't find any rational explanation for what I saw.

I felt like I had walked through a glitch in time, again only way I can describe it. I never talk about it in rl anymore as I think people will think I'm barking!

HelloNewman · 10/08/2015 20:57

No.

Because there is no such thing.

Ghostexperience · 10/08/2015 21:04

I would love to know how those who are completely closed to the idea would explain my experience. I am not saying that in a sarcastic way but genuinely I would love to know what it could have been if it wasn't that and another way of looking at it?

HelloNewman · 10/08/2015 21:26

I am so completely and utterly closed to the idea, that a ghost would have to knock on my door and come in for dinner, and pose for photos before I would even countenance the idea that there is a remote possibility they exist.

I think some people have a more fertile imagination than others and have maybe brought up with the idea of woo.

Honestly, if ghosts existed, wouldn't they have made themselves more obvious, somewhere through the passage of time? There would be evidence if it was real.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/08/2015 21:31

Yes I have. Talked about it extensively on another thread recently. I absolutely saw a ghost. It just was. I'm puzzled that I havent seen one before in all my 51 years, as I now know they exist.

QueenOfThorns · 10/08/2015 21:43

HelloNewman, I think you need to go to ThroughThick's house and look in the mirror! I wouldn't dare, because I'm a gigantic wuss and it might turn out to be true, then I'd be jumping at shadows for the rest of my life!

Ledkr · 10/08/2015 21:48

hello how do you know that for certain?
There are many mysteries in this world, nobody knows everything.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/08/2015 21:56

Queen, I'm going to replace the mirror with a painting, would rather not see again/anymore! Its been on my mind a lot.

QueenOfThorns · 10/08/2015 22:23

I'm not surprised! Perhaps you could get a refund from John Lewis Grin

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/08/2015 10:06

Maybe I should ebay it one ornate mirror. Ghost as a guaranteed extra Grin

MyPelvicFloorTrainsItself · 11/08/2015 10:13

My dad saw a ghost the day after my DB was born, next to DBs cot. It was the landlady from the pub they drank in who died a week before the birth.

He went to the pub few days later and the landlord asked if he'd seen his wife as she'd been to see him later the same night and told him that she'd just been to see the baby.

Weird.

Thistledew · 11/08/2015 10:21

I haven't seen a ghost, but I have heard one. I had been working a late shift in a pub, and this happened after closing time. I heard the distinctive squeak of the front door opening, heavy footsteps walking around the far side of the bar to the back room, and then a man's voice shouting something indistinct. I went to see who had just walked in but there was no one there. There was no other way out of the pub.

What I heard was so clear and unattributable to any other cause but someone walking into the pub that I had no expectation other than to see a human being. To this day I cannot explain what I heard by way of any rational explanation.

MarchelineWhatNot · 11/08/2015 10:21

I do not believe in ghosts. However…

Years ago, mid-70s, somebody I know took some photographs that had trees in them. The trees were full of faces. They were a few photos of the same scene and all had the same faces in the trees, no matter what angle they were taken from.

Has anybody else heard of this happening? I know there is a rational explanation, but I can't for the life of me think what it could be...

murphys · 11/08/2015 10:47

Yes, on two occasion actually.

First time, I was in my rebellious teenager years and my friend and I went out one night when we were told not to. We didn't have transport to get to the club we were going to and we were hitch hiking there. We were walking along the beach front and i felt a tap from behind me on my shoulder. I turned around and an old lady said to me "you shouldn't hitch hike, it is not safe" I turned around to look at my friend, and when I looked back the woman was gone. We just walked to where we were going to, as I was a bit freaked out by what had happened. A few weeks later a young woman was abducted from the town and taken to a spot not far from where i saw the old lady. She had her throat slit and was left for dead, but miraculously she survived. I will link her story if anyone is interested. I know that she was my guardian angel. I didn't believe it this before, but I KNOW now this is.....

My dd as toddler and a young child would often say that an old lady sat at the bottom of her bed. I would hear here talking and go in and ask her who she was talking to. She would say the old lady who is sitting there on my bed. I asked her to describe her one day. She described a lady that I believe is the same lady that came to me that day. Dd was a very unwell baby and toddler. She has been through a lot and in fact she is a miracle child just the fact that she is still here with us. I very very firmly believe that we have had some visits from angels.

The second incident was when we worked on a very old ship (built in 1904). The downstairs was always very cold at night, even when it was high outside temperatures. I was coming up the stairs one night and I had a chill all the way up my spine, the hairs on my arms where standing up straight. I remember it like it was yesterday. Then a shadow brushed past me on the stairs, going up faster than me. The shadow was ice cold, and as soon as it passed me, the coldness went too.

LemonCream · 11/08/2015 15:46

That's nice, murphys...so the old lady ghost wanted to keep YOU safe, but didn't give a shit about about the young woman who got her throat slit. That must make you feel very important to the universe.

There is no such thing as ghosts.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/08/2015 15:52

Oh yes there is.
