Cat ate dog pain relief and might die

Hi, I've never posted here before and I fully expect to get called worse than crap but believe me no one can make me feel any worse than I'm feeling myself. I've had a couple of crap weeks with my dog Molly who is nearly 14 years old and long story short Molly dog had an operation yesterday. I was sh##ting myself all day due to her age, but she was ok and came home last night. When we got home I don't know if the cat noticed an odd smell or what but she done off out and refused to come in. I was up and down with Molly all night she didn't settle at all. The vet said not to give her the medication without her eating something first, I rang and asked if I could mix it in the tuna to get her to eat it, I was told that was fine so I put the Rheumocam in with the tuna, I lay on the floor trying to entice Molly to eat it but she didn't. We then fell back asleep on the floor and I woke up to the noise of the cat eating the tuna. So I rang the vets and they said they would speak to a vet and call me back. They called me back an hour later and said I had to take her in immideiately and she probably woun't survive. The vet asked me why I didn't bring her in sooner an hour and a half had passes all in all, I said I didn't get a call back straight away. She said because my cat is 12 and very small, it has probably damaged her kidneys. They said she's very poorly and don't know if she will make it. Sorry for my long rambling post I just wondered if anyone has maybe had this happen to them before. I can only suspect my son had opened the bathroom window and she climbed in. She also didn't eat a huge amount as I kind of know how much tuna I put out. Any help out there at all for a person who loves her animals dearly and is having a crappy time xx

Just wanted to say I have my fingers crossed all is well in the end! How stressful but don't beat yourself up about it it sounds like you've had an awful few days and it was an accident.

Waveymaevey · 06/06/2023 17:43

So rehumocam is a non steroidal that’s used in both cats and dogs. The issue is cats have a much lower dose and their kidneys are more sensitive than dogs. So a dog dose may have caused harm. Treatment is fluids to support the kidneys and drugs to protect the stomach lining. It’s a mistake but worth making sure that you do everything to prevent further damage occurring and giving the kidneys the best chance of recovery.

Mollylegs · 06/06/2023 17:56

Hi @Waveymaevey they have kept Jessy in, they gave her something to make her vomit which she did very quickly and they have took bloods and were going to try and flush her kidneys out, They are going to ring me in the morning to let me know whats happening. Believe me I feel so bad, I just fell asleep and had no idea she had gotten back into the house.

You sound like the loveliest pet owner ❤️

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for both Jessy and Molly 🐱🐶

HelloSunshine12 · 06/06/2023 18:02

I hope she's OK.

This stuff happens. I've got a friend who has two dogs eat ibuprofen at different times.

One of mine ate a pregnancy multi vit. I was lucky that the vets checked it out and said she would just naturally excrete the excess. They found it funny as it had never happened before, a dog eating a pregnancy vit. Whereas I was terrified! She is only 4kgs so pretty dinky too.

Will cross my fingers for you x

Mollylegs · 06/06/2023 18:02

@myveryownelectrickitten thank you xx

It was an accident. I hope kitty pulls through ok

Honeyroar · 06/06/2023 18:06

Stop beating yourself up. It was all an unfortunate accident. Nothing you did deliberately.

If it helps you feel
bdtter, My 30 kilo dog ate the medicine in a bucket for my 700 kilo horse and survived without any problems. He was sick and threw it up. At the time we were just meant to be fostering him for someone on Mumsnet and I was terrified we’d killed their dog!

Little swines, aren’t they - won’t take their own medicine but will eat someone else’s! That’s how I worm my dogs nowadays - pretend it’s for the cat and accidentally drop it in front of the dog!

keep your chin up. Here’s hoping your cat comes back fine.

Little bloody bugger!! She would have refused it if she'd needed to take it!!

Hopefully she didn't actually ingest that much if it & will be fine by the time she's cost you a fortune!!

how's Molly tonight?

Mollylegs · 06/06/2023 18:13

Hi @HelloSunshine12 that is funny, my cat ate my contraceptive pill that I dropped on the floor years and years ago and the vet just laughed and said don't worry about her getting pregnant c

Please don’t beat yourself up for falling asleep.
I always have regrets with all my dogs but we do the best we can at the time. We are only human. It’s great you got your cat care so quickly and it sounds like she’s in good hands.

Roselilly36 · 06/06/2023 18:19

Aww OP you poor thing, it was an accident, wasn’t you fault at all. Give yourself a break. 🤞 all will be well. Good luck.

Techno56 · 06/06/2023 18:21

Hopefully the supportive care will do the trick.

My cat are loads of raisins (because I had picked them out of a coronation chicken sandwich and they were covered in mayo...) and there was quite a panic as they can be poisonous to cats like they are with dogs.

Who knew that a cat would eat raisins. He actually will eat almost anything so I'm not sure why I was surprised. He was fine though, fingers crossed yours will be too if they didn't eat much.

purpleme12 · 06/06/2023 18:26

It sounds like a genuine mistake.
I'm so sorry this has happened..
Really it shouldn't have taken so long for the vets to call you back.
You did what you were supposed to which was to ring the vets for advice

WillyLows · 06/06/2023 18:29

Keeping fingers and toes crossed that she pulls through ok, this is not your fault and you sound like a very caring pet mum.

stayathomer · 06/06/2023 18:30

Hope your cat is okay. Agree with everyone above, cats and dogs always go for the only things they shouldn’t x

Mollylegs · 06/06/2023 18:32

@Honeyroar thanks, daft sods all of them x

Doyouthinktheyknow · 06/06/2023 18:33

Hope both your cat and dog are okay🥰
Cats are little shits, if you had been trying to give them medicine, they never would have gone near it!

Fingers crossed for a good outcome. You obviously love your pets and did the best you could.
