Cat ate dog pain relief and might die

Hi, I've never posted here before and I fully expect to get called worse than crap but believe me no one can make me feel any worse than I'm feeling myself. I've had a couple of crap weeks with my dog Molly who is nearly 14 years old and long story short Molly dog had an operation yesterday. I was sh##ting myself all day due to her age, but she was ok and came home last night. When we got home I don't know if the cat noticed an odd smell or what but she done off out and refused to come in. I was up and down with Molly all night she didn't settle at all. The vet said not to give her the medication without her eating something first, I rang and asked if I could mix it in the tuna to get her to eat it, I was told that was fine so I put the Rheumocam in with the tuna, I lay on the floor trying to entice Molly to eat it but she didn't. We then fell back asleep on the floor and I woke up to the noise of the cat eating the tuna. So I rang the vets and they said they would speak to a vet and call me back. They called me back an hour later and said I had to take her in immideiately and she probably woun't survive. The vet asked me why I didn't bring her in sooner an hour and a half had passes all in all, I said I didn't get a call back straight away. She said because my cat is 12 and very small, it has probably damaged her kidneys. They said she's very poorly and don't know if she will make it. Sorry for my long rambling post I just wondered if anyone has maybe had this happen to them before. I can only suspect my son had opened the bathroom window and she climbed in. She also didn't eat a huge amount as I kind of know how much tuna I put out. Any help out there at all for a person who loves her animals dearly and is having a crappy time xx

Thinking of you and hoping that your little cat makes it through. Never give up hope. It was a complete accident on your part: as others have said, you did what you were supposed to do.

Please don’t feel bad, you didn’t do anything wrong. Keeping everything crossed Jessy is okay and Molly makes a speedy recovery x

MrsMitford3 · 06/06/2023 18:45

Oh @Mollylegs poor you!!

Absolutely not your fault that you feel asleep-you have so much on your plate and I'm sure the stress is exhausting.

My Dcat has been twice "on deaths door" with acute kidney failure. They think she ate something but we don't know. She was very poorly and it was a friday and I basically brought her home to die. But she didn't. Twice.
The vet said they'd never had a cat survive with those numbers and no idea why she did.

Don't give up!! Fingers crossed for you all!!!

Mollylegs · 06/06/2023 18:46

I really hope so @Roselilly36 xx

I hope your cat is ok :)

my dog got hold of a packet of co codamol when he was a puppy. Fished it off my bedside table and chewed it up! He had to spend 3 days at the vets! I was beside myself. he was fine in the end though, and is still an absolute dustbin now, we have to be really careful what we leave lying about.

Tillyteacup · 06/06/2023 18:49

Aww please do not blame yourself. My rabbit ate a full jam donut my son had thrown in the garden as he didn’t want it. They have really sensitive stomachs but he was just fine. Hope the same for your cat fingers crossed!

Prescottdanni123 · 06/06/2023 18:50

That was pretty poor of your vet's to be honest. When an animal has consumed something that is potentially toxic to them, like medicine, the receptionist really should try to get an answer from the vet straight away in terms of how to proceed, not leave you for an hour and a half.

Hoping and praying your cat will be OK.

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 06/06/2023 18:55

I understand the worry. My cat got himself covered in poisonous pollen when he was 8 months old OP, it was all over him and would have been lethal if he’d ingested it. We don’t know if he did have any, but he had to have 2 days on fluids at the vets as a precaution, they also gave him charcoal. He’s now 5 and is a perfectly healthy cat, we were nearly 1k worse off, but it was worth it to protect him.

Don’t give yourself a hard time, our pets are sentient creatures with a will of the own. We just look after them as best we can, but we aren’t able to be responsible for every move they make.

We had a medication mix up which meant cat was on dog drugs (so stronger proportionally per dose) for a few weeks until I looked at the image on the bottle properly. The bottles are identical apart from the dog or cat silhouette. The vets freaked, cat was in 24 hours or so with potential kidney issues she was fine. She was also a tiny 2.75kg old lady. (The medication mis-issue was their fault).

Wishing her the best of luck OP. Accidents happen, hopefully she will have only absorbed a cat sized dose. Everything crossed for her here.

Silkierabbit · 06/06/2023 19:25

Hope your cat is OK, and has just used up 1 of her 9 lives.

EmpressMoo · 06/06/2023 19:42

Oh no, poor thing! Hope she makes a speedy recovery. How big was the dose?

I believe there is a risk of renal failure in cats, which is why it is no longer recommended for cats, but it did used to be prescribed for cats so fingers crossed she didn't ingest too much.
