Cat ate dog pain relief and might die

Hi, I've never posted here before and I fully expect to get called worse than crap but believe me no one can make me feel any worse than I'm feeling myself. I've had a couple of crap weeks with my dog Molly who is nearly 14 years old and long story short Molly dog had an operation yesterday. I was sh##ting myself all day due to her age, but she was ok and came home last night. When we got home I don't know if the cat noticed an odd smell or what but she done off out and refused to come in. I was up and down with Molly all night she didn't settle at all. The vet said not to give her the medication without her eating something first, I rang and asked if I could mix it in the tuna to get her to eat it, I was told that was fine so I put the Rheumocam in with the tuna, I lay on the floor trying to entice Molly to eat it but she didn't. We then fell back asleep on the floor and I woke up to the noise of the cat eating the tuna. So I rang the vets and they said they would speak to a vet and call me back. They called me back an hour later and said I had to take her in immideiately and she probably woun't survive. The vet asked me why I didn't bring her in sooner an hour and a half had passes all in all, I said I didn't get a call back straight away. She said because my cat is 12 and very small, it has probably damaged her kidneys. They said she's very poorly and don't know if she will make it. Sorry for my long rambling post I just wondered if anyone has maybe had this happen to them before. I can only suspect my son had opened the bathroom window and she climbed in. She also didn't eat a huge amount as I kind of know how much tuna I put out. Any help out there at all for a person who loves her animals dearly and is having a crappy time xx

I tried to post a couple of photos of my little troop of family members, not sure if it will let me put them on though. Does anyone have trouble trying to stick photos on? I can't work out what I'm doing wrong.

Hi @uncomfortablydumb53 it's just been relentless, Molly started with this polyp problem nearly 3 weeks ago and I've been back and forwards quite a few times. I only want whats best for her and now poor Jessy getting poorly was something me and Jessy could have done without xx

You're a wonderful pet mum
We just want the best for them

EmpressMoo · 07/06/2023 19:38

You're welcome!

I just wanted to reassure you a bit. There is a big difference between having a few mouthfuls and ingesting a cat sized dose than scarfing the whole lot! A bit like accidentally taking 2 paracetamol and a Lemsip compared to taking an entire box of paracetamol in one go for humans. Did the vet not ask how much you thought she might have eaten?

Look forward to seeing any photos of your troublesome fur babies that you post!

Mollylegs · 08/06/2023 07:15

@uncomfortablydumb53 yes we do. I got some sleep and Molly has just had a poo so I'm ecstatic. xx

H i @EmpressMoo I told them more than once that I knew how much she had eaten as I had put the tuna out, I suppose they just err on the side of caution. The vet was rather short with me and asked why I waited just over an hour and a half to bring her in. I explained rhat I didn't know if it was bad for her and said how I had rung the vets within 5 minutes of her eating it. The receptionist said she would speak to a vet and tell me what to do. She didn't ring me back for just over an hour and I got there in about 25 minutes, the vet made me feel like crap, if I had known of course I'd have taken her in quicker. I think she must have thought I didn't give a stuff which is so wrong. In other news Molly has just had a poo, so I'm doing a little happy dance. Jessy is fuming as she normally plays out all day and I've been trying to keep her in, she's walking around howling her little head off, I'm glad she is howling though xx

I’ve just seen your post about pain relief and pooing. It looks as though Molly is through the worst then. If she seems comfortable, it would be better to do without. The vet is unlikely to want to prescribe unless they see her so that’s £50ish plus the prescription charge and meds.

Mollylegs · 08/06/2023 08:55

Hi @Mummyoflittledragon she had a poo thank god, I don't fancy taking her again as it really stresses her out x

That is just bloody awful.

Hope that things are on the up for you all.

Hi @EmpressMoo sorry to bother you, I'm not much of a tech person, I only joined mumsnet when my git of a husband buggered off after 21 years. Could you tell me(if you know how) to find the cat litter tray page you mentioned, I was hoping someone might be able to help me regarding Jessy eating charcoal. I can't read the label as it was black and un readable. I hope your having a nice day, it's actually kind of nice that I have been able to have an exchange with somebody. Cheers xx

It's probably best to call the vets for advice about the charcoal.

Online (eg a computer) to find the litter tray board, click on the Topics button. On the Topics page, scroll down until you find the black heading that says "Pets". There will be blue links underneath, the first one is this board "pets", the second is "the doghouse", for dog lovers, the third is "the litter tray", for cat slaves 😂

Not sure how it looks in the app but it will be a similar pathway.

Or you could just search for "the litter tray" in the search function, then click on the blue heading that says "the litter tray" from one of the posts that comes up in the search to get to the thread index.

Mollylegs · 08/06/2023 18:14

Hi @diddl thankfully Jessy is home and Molly had a poo today so she's happier now xx

Oh My God @spiderlight this made me laugh out loud. When I was out on the field with her yesterday the other dog parents must of thought I was nuts trying to get up close and personal with my dogs backside. I needed a good laugh tank you xx

Hi @EmpressMoo I phoned the vets back and got their advice, the instructions were covered in charcoal to the point I couldn't read the label so I has no idea how to use it xx
