Cat ate dog pain relief and might die

Hi, I've never posted here before and I fully expect to get called worse than crap but believe me no one can make me feel any worse than I'm feeling myself. I've had a couple of crap weeks with my dog Molly who is nearly 14 years old and long story short Molly dog had an operation yesterday. I was sh##ting myself all day due to her age, but she was ok and came home last night. When we got home I don't know if the cat noticed an odd smell or what but she done off out and refused to come in. I was up and down with Molly all night she didn't settle at all. The vet said not to give her the medication without her eating something first, I rang and asked if I could mix it in the tuna to get her to eat it, I was told that was fine so I put the Rheumocam in with the tuna, I lay on the floor trying to entice Molly to eat it but she didn't. We then fell back asleep on the floor and I woke up to the noise of the cat eating the tuna. So I rang the vets and they said they would speak to a vet and call me back. They called me back an hour later and said I had to take her in immideiately and she probably woun't survive. The vet asked me why I didn't bring her in sooner an hour and a half had passes all in all, I said I didn't get a call back straight away. She said because my cat is 12 and very small, it has probably damaged her kidneys. They said she's very poorly and don't know if she will make it. Sorry for my long rambling post I just wondered if anyone has maybe had this happen to them before. I can only suspect my son had opened the bathroom window and she climbed in. She also didn't eat a huge amount as I kind of know how much tuna I put out. Any help out there at all for a person who loves her animals dearly and is having a crappy time xx

Any news on Jessy? ❤️

HelloSunshine12 · 06/06/2023 22:13

Still thinking of you, OP. It was an accident. I know you'll beat yourself up but you'll see from the things some of us have posted, we have simply been fortunate that ours came out of it OK! One of my other dogs ate some ranunculus corms about six months ago and I had to ring the poison line. Again, thankfully he was OK! I must sound like a terrible dog owner. I've had six in 15 years (adopted some oldies) and not had too many incidents, but it does happen. One of my current ones likes to eat stones so he can't even go outside unless constantly supervised 🤦🏽‍♀️

YoSof · 06/06/2023 22:16

I hope your cat is ok and you’re being kind to yourself, it was an accident - you’ve got a lot going on. Thinking of you x

Startyabastard · 06/06/2023 22:23

Oh love, don't blame yourself. It's very obvious that you love and care for your pets, as do I.
I hope you get some good news, but absolutely don't go hard on yourself.
I wish I could hug you 😘xxxxxx

Toddlerteaplease · 06/06/2023 22:24

It was an accident. Fingers crossed for your cat. You sound like a really caring owner/slave.

Startyabastard · 06/06/2023 22:25

They have lovely names

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 06/06/2023 22:50

Aww, thinking of you and your lovely pets tonight. Keeping everything crossed that Jessy bounces back. Don't be hard on yourself OP, as said upthread, they are sentient beings and with the best will in the world we can't keep them safe all of the time. I gave my dog a massive overdose by accident once and he was fine after a night at the vets. I nearly lost him but he recovered just fine. Hugs.

Dragonsandcats · 06/06/2023 22:52

Thinking of you and your pets, I do hope it will all be ok.

Hi @SuperbSummer2023 Molly is in a bit of a state. she had an op to get a polyp removed that was kind of hanging out like a pile. She doesnt want to go to the toilet as I think it must not feel right, poor soul xx

@Mollylegs

oh poor baby! Has she got medicine to make it softer & easier to go.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/06/2023 23:15

I can completely see how this would happen, you're only human op 💐

I hope both your pets feel better soon.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/06/2023 23:40

Fingers crossed for Jesy and I hope Molly feels better soon
Don't feel bad, you weren't to know the cat was there, it's just one of those things

Mollylegs · 07/06/2023 08:24

Hi @EmpressMoo my dog is 14kg so I'm not exactly sure how it works in tiny cats. She only got a few mouthfuls looking at how much was still in the bowl. I've not slept much and Molly won't go to the loo, she keeps going outside and I'm hiding behind the door watching and waiting. Honestly so cross with myself but I genuinely thought Jessy was still outside. Just waiting for a phonecall now.

Hi @WetBandits I'm so sorry I didn't realise you had asked how Jessy was. I was asked last night not to ring this morning as they have a staff meeting, So just sat here like a tin of milk waiting for a phonecall. Molly won't go to the toilet this morning, she is obviously still scared. She needs to go though xx

@HelloSunshine12 Hi I'm sorry I didn't go back on mmsnet after a while. Yes I just feel really annoyed at myself. I have been so worked up about Mollys operation as she#s nearly 14 years old, she is my first dog and she came to us at 6 weeks old as her mum didn't like her very much. i have been so terrified about losing Molly that is how the sleep deprivation came about to start with. The dog eating stones is hilarious xx

🤞 all turns out well 🙏

Mollylegs · 07/06/2023 08:48

@Startyabastard thank you for your kindness, we had a beautiful cat named Timmy too who only lived till he was 6 as he got poisoned when out playing, I think that is what is upsetting my poor son as Timmy couldn't hold his head up or anything, whereas Jessy was full of hell getting put in the box so Jack is thinking she isn't too bad. I wish somebody would ring me ixx
