Should we adopt this old girl

So my sister in law has just put her beautiful 9year old golden retriever into a shelter because she basically can't be bother with her anymore. Shes had a tough life and was neglected before my sister in law got her 5 or 6 years ago. Anyway I really want to take this dog in. But we have 2 cats and a 2year old, I know she is very good with kids and has been lovely since my sister in law has had her. This beautiful dog is in Ireland and we're in England so would be a big leap of faith bringing her over and im worried it will be a disaster. I just know we could provide a lovely retirement home for her and would never give up on her like her previous owners. Should we go for it?

I have a golden oldie who will be 19 this year! When I adopted him at 14, they said ‘are you sure because he’ll probably only ge here for another year’! And they gave him to me for free they thought he was such a bad deal!! So she might still have half of her life left to spend with you ♥️ My second golden oldie was adopted in lockdown, he is 11 and was very ‘old’ - lethargic and overweight. He’s now a slim Jim who loves his long woodland walks! And he’s about to become a proper family dog for the second time in his life as we’ve just had our first baby boy so the two of them will be growing older playing together. Hugs for you both! Enjoy xox

This is such a lovely thread. I can't wait to see her happy face when she realises she has a family again ❤️

Omg her sad little face Sad

Honeyroar · 08/03/2022 23:02

Well done you. She’s gorgeous. Go get her. And give your sister a slap and a lecture on what a cunt she is while you’re there!

Honeyroar · 08/03/2022 23:06

We always use stair gates for the cats - so they could get upstairs but the dogs can’t. And make sure they have somewhere to eat, sleep and litter tray out of the way of the dog. Our cats stayed aloof and watched from afar for a good while until they felt confident, then gradually eased back into family life.

Squeezyhug · 08/03/2022 23:38

Well done OP!😊
She looks so sad. You’re just amazing! Look
forward to next pics Smile

Scattyhattie · 08/03/2022 23:46

SadShe looks so sad and lost. It's worth a try if can put safety measures in place to separate. Can always get in touch with the breed rescue to if it turns out yours isn't the best fit and view as a foster stepping stone as she'll have a better chance of finding a home mainland UK.

StrawberryPot · 08/03/2022 23:55

Thank you for being such a lovely, kind and caring person. I hope you have many happy years with your beautiful girl.

And I hope your sister in law gets dumped in a not very nice care home when she's old and never gets any visitors.

StrawberryPot · 08/03/2022 23:57

I endorse what Scattyhattie says. I volunteer for a breed specific rescue organisation and they are excellent at matching dogs to good homes.

notangelinajolie · 09/03/2022 00:05

She is lovely. Well done OP, absolutely the right thing to do.

3001signon · 09/03/2022 10:18

Brilliant!

You will be counting down the days until she is with you.
I hope the cats adjust without too many issues. Looking forward to the update pic when you have her.

AlmostMaybe · 09/03/2022 10:47

I’m so please you’ve decided to take her. She’s beautiful.

I wouldn’t be talking to my sister in law after this. 🤬

shewillhaveherway · 09/03/2022 12:50

❤️ I’m so happy to read your update. I hope it all goes brilliantly.

Eloisedublin123 · 09/03/2022 12:53

Do you want me to visit her op? I’m in Dublin

Rhannion · 09/03/2022 13:10

She is beautiful, I hope everything goes smoothly and she is part of your family for a long time.

There’s a lot of nasty posters and then every now and then, you come across a poster offering something like Eloisedublin123 has. So, so lovely. ❤️

What a heartwarming thread. Poor dog looks so sad sitting on that miserable, wet bit of concrete. I'm not even a doggy person and it made me want to cry. I'm so glad you're going to get her OP Flowers

Shiiiiiiiiiiitttt · 09/03/2022 13:51

Well done op. MIL died so we have her two little dogs. I was dreading it because of the cats but we couldn’t put them into a rescue. It’s actually been fine and they all now get on and sleep in a big heap. In the early days the cats were not happy but soon put the dogs in their place. I think it should be easier with an older bigger dog, she looks like a calm one too.

Arabella91 · 09/03/2022 13:55

Thank you everyone! I am so blown away by all the love that our girl is getting! And you've all made even more convinced we have made the right decision. Thanks for all the helpful tips and advice. We have changed our booking to Saturday and I will be setting off at 2am to bring our girl home. I wish i could get there even sooner! @Eloisedublin123 that is honestly the kindest offer, thank you so much. But she is in derry in Northern ireland at the moment, I should've been clearer. I'm absolutely loving hearing old your rescue stories of golden oldies... keep them coming! Such kind people out there! ❤️

I read your thread last night and your photo moved me to tears ( but then I had just been to a gin tasting Grin).
I'm so glad you're adopting her, she looked so sad and lost in the picture. Why has your sis just abandoned her like that ?

Halllyup17 · 09/03/2022 14:00

Oh my gosh, I am not a dog person at all, but that sweet little face looking so sad has genuinely tugged at my heart strings. I hope she has many wonderful years left with you and your family!

MrsWinters · 09/03/2022 14:01

You won’t regret it. Golden retrievers are so kind, she might take a little while to settle after her journey but I’m sure she will give you all the love and affection in the world.
