Should we adopt this old girl

So my sister in law has just put her beautiful 9year old golden retriever into a shelter because she basically can't be bother with her anymore. Shes had a tough life and was neglected before my sister in law got her 5 or 6 years ago. Anyway I really want to take this dog in. But we have 2 cats and a 2year old, I know she is very good with kids and has been lovely since my sister in law has had her. This beautiful dog is in Ireland and we're in England so would be a big leap of faith bringing her over and im worried it will be a disaster. I just know we could provide a lovely retirement home for her and would never give up on her like her previous owners. Should we go for it?

She is such a beautiful girl. Well done op this has made me shed a tear. Hope all goes smoothly for you and she's with you before too long.

WonderfulYou · 08/03/2022 20:40

Amazing news!! Well done OP!
Not only have you rescued this one, you’ve also freed up a kennel so another dog can be helped.

Extratoebeans · 08/03/2022 20:47

That photo of her nearly pushed me over the edge, her sad little face. Why on earth would you get rid of an old dog, especially one who had already had a rough start. Im so sad for her. Im really glad you are taking her OP, please keep us updated with photos when you get the chance Flowers

BOOTS52 · 08/03/2022 20:48

Aw her photo nearly made me cry, her beautiful eyes. You are so kind and so thoughtful and a dog lover like myself. She will be so happy with you and you have saved her and have so much love to give. She will reward you with lots of love and happy times. We always had dogs when growing up but never had my own dog but did adopt a lovely Black lab mix few years ago and she is like my baby now. Love her to bits and is nicer than most humans ha!!! She is spoiled rotten. The only thing that drives me mad is the hairs as never realized would be so much. Short haired dogs have the double coat so it is worse. Bet you cannot wait to get her home to you and your family. Such a nice thoughtful loving thing you have done to give her a family and loving home. Lovely to read a thread like this as so much horrible things going on in the world and all doom and gloom. Give us an update when she is settled in.

Omg what a lovely lovely couple you are. This thread has made me well up 😢 but I'm so glad that she has you guys now ❤️❤️ I'm sure she will be loved and have a lovely life with you.
Shame on your SIL I can't get my head round it.
But good for you OP xxx

foxology · 08/03/2022 20:57

Oh OP she is gorgeous. You really are doing a wonderful thing.

Spaghag · 08/03/2022 21:03

Oh my, there seems to be something in my eye Wink.

A beautiful dog for a beautiful family. Enjoy your happy years together Smile.

Hoppinggreen · 08/03/2022 21:05

Oh she’s lovely
Be warned though, Goldies utilise that sad face to great effect on a daily basis.
I am sure she really will be happy with you though (despite looking devastated if you eat your own toast crusts)

FeelinSpendy · 08/03/2022 21:05

I’m so glad you’re taking her. She looks like a lovely dog and deserves a loving family. It’s so heartless when people get rid of animals as they can’t be bothered with them anymore - some people should just never be allowed to have them in the first place.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 08/03/2022 21:10

Well done for giving her a loving home. I hope the universe repays your kindness tenfold. Star

SherbertLemons · 08/03/2022 21:13

OldSpeclkledHen · 08/03/2022 21:30

Glad you're Rehoming her, what a sweet girl x

RandomMess · 08/03/2022 21:31

Lint bells Dona whole range of supplements to help dogs and cats with arthritis, gut issues etc etc with her being an oldie I thought I'd put it out there.

The difference to our cats arthritis was amazing.

Our cats accepted the dog fairly quickly. I'd have a quiet area for your Goldie where the DC can't get to her because as she gets older she may be in pain and hide it which is when growling/snapping/biting incidents can occur.

bettertocryinamercedes · 08/03/2022 21:35

Oh bless her wee heart - she looks very sad.

Delighted you are taking her, many 💐 for you

MyDogTails · 08/03/2022 21:39

Oh wow what a lovely kind thing to do! More photos please when she is settled.

SunshineCake1 · 08/03/2022 21:41

Thank goodness you are taking her. Can you go sooner? She does look so sad Sad.

NewYearCalavicci · 08/03/2022 21:47

I am so glad you are going ahead with the adoption.

Have / will you tell you sister ?
Personally I wouldn't, as pp said she may decide she wants her dog back at some point or start telling you how to look after her .
Make sure you get ( and make copies ) of all the adoption paper work so there can be no ambiguities.
If she gas been chipped by your sis you need to find out how to change the details on the chip just in case your new pooch goes missing.

I am sure your cats will take the huff to start with but they will soon come round.

foorisajar · 08/03/2022 21:58

I adopted a 13yo Rommie girl with terminal cancer. Best 10 months of my life.

ouch321 · 08/03/2022 22:15

What made your SIL give her up?

I know you said couldn't be bothered but that would be odd if she'd had her for years...

Did SIL have a child and struggled for time? Or they moved to a flat?

Normally there is some trigger.

fortunenookie · 08/03/2022 22:22

She is just beautiful
So very glad you are doing the right thing and taking her on to be part of your home. If you wouldn’t I would!
Please keep us posted on how she settles in and good luck
