Bump and I'm posting this or similar on all threads discussing a male rapist being allowed to access women's single sex spaces the moment he comes out of jail. (As long as he still has all the feels and wears his pink leggings and shit wig ofc) it'll probably be deleted and our concerns relegated to thisquiet corner again (so, like the whole FWR Sex and Gender topic debacle basically) You can discuss it, but do it quietly.

This whole case has been a mockery of "justice" since it began.

It's also highlighted again the very important need for a distinction to be made between biological sex and gender (even a GRC which this man can obtain by "living as a woman" eg wearing pink leggings and a fucking wig). Anyone concerned about this rapist being allowed access to women in single sex facilities in four years time can show their concern by adding their signature to this petition (government website so your details aren't made public/shared).

Sex Matters is asking people in the UK to sign our official petition calling on the government to update the Equality Act 2010 to make clear that the protected characteristic of “sex” means biological sex, and is not modified by the holding of a gender recognition certificate.

Laws should be understandable by everyone, and this year the government recognised the need for new laws to be clear about the meaning of “sex”:

“The effect of section 9 of the Gender Recognition Act 2004 is that a reference to a ‘woman’ in legislation, without more, will include someone who is a woman by virtue of a Certificate and will not include someone who is a man by virtue of a Certificate. In some cases, this might be the desired result but in others it might not.”

According to a report in the Telegraph, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also intends to “look to review the Equality Act to make it clear that sex means biological sex rather than gender”.

We are calling on the government to do this by using the power written into the GRA to modify the operation of the Equality Act 2010 to put it beyond doubt that the terms “sex”, “male”, “female”, “man” and “woman”, for the purpose of sex discrimination laws, mean biological sex and not “sex as modified by a Gender Recognition Certificate”.

Why is this important?
The Equality Act 2010 defines nine separate protected characteristics, including “sex” and “gender reassignment”, and protects people from discrimination on grounds of those characteristics.

“Sex” and “gender reassignment” are separate protected characteristics, but there has been much confusion about how the Equality Act 2010 and Gender Recognition Act 2004 interact. This has caused uncertainty for women, transgender people, employers, schools and service providers. It has led to tensions and conflicts.

Parliamentary debate and a legislative amendment is the democratic and transparent way to clarify the law for the benefit of everyone.

Has JK Rowling tweeted this? Or any person with wide followership? I have seen some famous people do so, but more exposure would really help. Any ideas who might be persuaded?

@glinner tweeted it a few weeks ago. I could understand why JKR might not, perhaps too political. I saw a link in KJK's livestream from the Police station. I'm told it's been in the comments under the occasional Times article. Other than that....

Make the Equality Act clear
Because the law is unclear, organisations are afraid to provide single-sex services and to protect people against harassment by communicating clear rules.

^We are calling on the government to resolve this by using the power written into the GRA to modify the operation of the Equality Act 2010 to put it beyond doubt that the terms “sex”, “male”, “female”, “man” and “woman” in the Act mean biological sex and not “sex as modified by a Gender Recognition Certificate”.

This would mean that everyone is protected against discrimination based on their biological sex, while all trans people also have protection against discrimination because of being trans.

It would make it simpler for service providers and regulators to understand the law, and clearer for them to communicate rules, which protect everyone against harassment and unlawful discrimination.
