slayerette · 03/07/2008 16:07

20!

But I am an English teacher. You'd be worried for your kids if I got fewer than that, wouldn't you?!

Milliways · 03/07/2008 16:12

20! But one (Metaphor) was a pure guess!

elkiedee · 03/07/2008 16:28

20, and yes, hyphen is to join long-lost but I think that sentence could have both, either or neither the hyphen and exclamation mark in personally. The spellings are all typing test favourites.

Flumpybumpy · 03/07/2008 16:29

14 but I don't care

Midge25 · 03/07/2008 16:29

Spaceman · 03/07/2008 16:36

Flamesparrow · 03/07/2008 16:36

19 - accommodation did it... oddly enough i can spell it normally

Slubberdegullion · 03/07/2008 16:41

19

OMFG I am just the shittiest (shitiest????) speller in the world ever, and put apostrophes in all over the place when I get excited or anxious....and I got 19.

Oh I am so happy. I can be a pedant.

Don't worry, I wont. I am frightened of this place.

Cosette · 03/07/2008 16:45

20 here too , but have to admit to being slightly unsure about the metaphor question.

Squirdle · 03/07/2008 16:53

17

WendyWeber · 03/07/2008 17:35

I only got the metaphor one because it wasn't any of the others [brazen]

streakybacon · 04/07/2008 07:44

20 !

Miaou · 04/07/2008 07:50

woo hoo - I got them all right

And I didn't have a cup of coffee first

theyoungvisiter · 04/07/2008 08:00

oh I saw that on the beeb website yday!

I got 20/20 [smug].

There is a maths one next week - shall we come back next week and see if we are still so clever?

Hecate · 04/07/2008 08:01

20/20

I'm proud, but worried too. I don't see myself as a pedant. My grammar is too hit and miss for a start. Also, I want to say I'm not anal enough, but I think we all know that's a lie.

On the bright side - does this mean that I am allowed to start a thread in the Corner? I've been wanted to offload my pain for ages (people using the wrong words!)

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2008 08:10

20 for me. By chance a bit, because I struggle with double letters.

The metaphor/simile thing is stupid - it's a similie if you say 'is like' 'is x as'. "The cat is black like the night" is a simile. So is "The cat is as black as the night." But "The cat's colour is night" is a metaphor.

theyoungvisiter · 04/07/2008 08:18

oh and on the the hyphen thing - it's not a matter of choice as a couple of people have suggested.

A "long lost brother" is a tall brother who is missing.

A "long-lost brother" is a brother who has been missing for a long time.

So it would be actually incorrect not to use a hyphen as the sentence would have a different meaning.

Whereas the exclamation mark is optional - you could choose to use one but it's not essential.

eemie · 04/07/2008 09:39

Agree with CD - 'ostentatious' does not mean pretentious.

Nor does 'taciturn' mean quiet. It means you don't say a lot. You could be taciturn and noisy. I often am

mamalovesmojitos · 04/07/2008 22:26

19! dreading the maths quiz
