Why do people struggle so much with 'Dachshund'?

It's literally just 'Dachs' (German for badger) 'hund' (German for dog). Surely 'Hund' is such common knowledge it's really only the 'Dachs' one has to remember? This week alone I've seen it spelt 'Dashchund, Dashound, Daxan and Dachssund. I realise there are some breeds out there with tricky spelling that are maybe hard to get your head around, but Dachshund, I really don't get the confusion over!

Because most people don’t speak German?!

I pronounce it wrong - I know it’s Dax-hund but still say Dash-und because the correct way makes me feel really pretentious!

nocoolnamesleft · Yesterday 17:27

Well, if we're pronouncing it the German way, surely the final d sounds like a t?

topcat2014 · Yesterday 17:28

They were dash hounds when I grew up

IzzyLeng · Yesterday 17:31

I just call them Wieners 😁

Dearg · Yesterday 17:32

Gosh , how many people are writing about Dachshund - and is Hund both plural and singular - it sounds that way to me 🤔

I feel I may be missing some important stories about Sausage dogs 😱

BillieWiper · Yesterday 17:35

Yeah it's a foreign word. Why would an English person know the German for badger of all things? Even if they did it at school decades ago I can't imagine remembering 'badger'?!

'Daxan' makes me chuckle though. Like super phonetic but not really any thought for the potential etymology. It's more like the car, Datsun? If that still exists? 🤣

I have never given a moment's though to the derivation of the word, had no idea dachs meant badger and yes hund is fairly obvious when you think about it but I never really have. In fact this is probably the first time I have ever written the word dachshund so I did have to stop and think about how it's said in order to spell it. I'm not in the least bit surprised people get it wrong.

AuroraBloom · Yesterday 17:46

I'd just write sausage dog.

NoteyMcNoteface · Yesterday 17:46

I call them Dobermice.

RaraRachael · Yesterday 17:49

We always said dash-hound and still do although I know it's wrong.

cariadlet · Yesterday 17:59

It's probably the pronunciation.

I know the correct spelling, know the German meaning of the word, know why they have the name and know how to pronounce the name in German.

But I still pronounce the name as if it was spellt dash hound as that's what I grew up hearing and it would feel pretentious to pronounce the word dax hund.

I should imagine that if someone regularly hears dash hound, doesn't speak any German and only occasionally sees the word written down, it could be hard to recall the correct spelling.

Off the point but if you like dachshunds look up the Southwold Sausage Walk Smile

Wolfiefan · Yesterday 18:02

Hate hearing them called dash hounds. We call them morsels.

brownbootsandhats · Yesterday 18:33

My eyes feel like they are rotating in my head every time I try to read that word - verging on painful !

Fakeplasticchimneyswhy · Yesterday 18:46

I thought this was going to be about pronunciation, not spelling, and you were asking everyone to pronounce it the German way with the throat-clearing ‘ch’ sound. Not noticed any common misspellings, but then again I don’t have a Dachshund! I can see how they might come about though given how it’s usually pronounced.

If you were calling a dachshund what a German would, then it’d be dackel.Grin

I call them Dobermice.

We did occasionally call ours a Doberdwarf.

ToadRage · Yesterday 19:34

My best friend has two and i cringe even time she says Dash-hound. I don't feel like I can correct her but she also doesn't comment when I say Dax-hund.

HikingHippo · Yesterday 19:35

I can forgive most people this mistake, except actual owners of the breed.
