Why do people struggle so much with 'Dachshund'?

It's literally just 'Dachs' (German for badger) 'hund' (German for dog). Surely 'Hund' is such common knowledge it's really only the 'Dachs' one has to remember? This week alone I've seen it spelt 'Dashchund, Dashound, Daxan and Dachssund. I realise there are some breeds out there with tricky spelling that are maybe hard to get your head around, but Dachshund, I really don't get the confusion over!

I pronounce it dash hound because I grew up pronouncing it like that, and don’t know German. Sorry if you’re offended by my lack of knowledge of the German for badger. It’s not something that comes up in my daily conversation.

'Duvet' is a foreign word but we manage that alright! We don't go around saying duv-et or writing doovay.

Duvet is a real day to day word. The dog word isn’t.

The average adult reading age in England is 9 so I’m really not sure why you’re confused by people finding a word with German roots tricky.
