...but over on Facebook someone has repeatedly used 'cart' instead of 'can't'. Not just the once, which I could overlook, but continuously.

I may have to delete Facebook. And then burn my laptop.

PJPatrol · 01/03/2025 15:45

I would leave Facebook for the 'forcible'

upinaballoon · 02/03/2025 12:08

Is it possible that some sort of predictive text could have made a cart after someone typed in the c and the a?

I'm trying to work out who the Forcibles are.

unsync · 02/03/2025 12:35

My teeth are itching. Thanks. I did chortle at 'forcible' though. A forcible future sounds like a Trumpian method of resolving conflict.

Forcible = foreseeable!

Oh I get annoyed at people's appalling spelling and grammar on Facebook. And it's got worse since they changed the format so that it's more difficult to change posts after you've written them. I've even noticed errors in my postings and had to delete and start again.

nopenotplaying · 02/03/2025 12:52

Oh there is a regular on my FB that uses carnt 🤦🏼‍♀️

Um... Is this post a joke?

No wrong thread will get it removed.
Sorry everyone.

Chuchoter · 02/03/2025 13:10

I've seen a lot of swede instead of suede being used to describe things for sale!

One post had a woman gently correct the author and the author was perplexed and wouldn't change the spelling of swede to suede! 😬

I was going to say this. It drives me mad.

OrsolaRosso · 02/03/2025 13:12

I often see defiantly used instead of definitely.

HelpMeGetThrough · 02/03/2025 13:16

ect instead of etc.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/03/2025 13:33

I'm a bit more forgiving (probably more than I should be) about ect, because how many people will have seen et cetera actually written down? But the 'cart'....I'm as sure as I can be that it wasn't predictive text as it was repeated several times.. all the things she 'cart understand'... It made my spine crawl, She must, surely, have come across the word 'can't' written down, even if she pronounces it 'cart'.

A friend of mine spells clever as cleaver.
Eg "DD did X today, she's such a cleaver girl!"

She hates being corrected however, so in years and years of friendship I've just tried to ignore it and not correct her. But it's the irony...

upinaballoon · 02/03/2025 22:08

GammonAndEgg · 02/03/2025 12:37

Forcible = foreseeable!

Thank you !

Re et cetera - on a thread quite a while ago, either here or Chat, there was a question from a person whose first language wasn't English. She/He asked what it should be, having realised that it appeared more than one way. I was well pleased that someone cared and wanted to know. I often write it out the long way, really because of that person's question.

CeliaCanth · 02/03/2025 22:29

I did spot “lone behold” on here tonight…that’s a new one I believe!

cordeliavorkosigan · 02/03/2025 22:32

I saw "AIBU to not of seen my (whoever).. " on here the other day and I think I might have to turn off the whole Internet and hide forever.

cordeliavorkosigan · 02/03/2025 22:33

.. and there is a lot of defiance, with people defiantly needing more time and defiantly having a conversation!

FrannyScraps · 02/03/2025 22:37

A friend of my sister in law constantly posts about her 'newphew'. I actually started to question whether I was the one spelling it wrong because I saw it that often.

stanleypops66 · 02/03/2025 23:21

@CeliaCanth I saw that too

sesquipedalian · 02/03/2025 23:44

Is it possible, OP, that whoever put up the post used a spoken program rather than writing it? I’ve seen typos in comments on newspaper articles (Times and Telegraph) where I think people must have something that transcribes text because the sorts of mistakes that are not something you would ever write. (Having said that, I’ve also seen schoolboy howler mistakes in the comments.)

I suppose, being very generous, that Dragon (or other 'speech to text' software might have been involved. Although I very very much doubt it, seeing some of the other posts on the same Facebook thread.

And I also have just seen the 'lone behold' post on here. I'm charitably assuming that autocorrect has been invoked...

OP posts:
Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/03/2025 19:22

And I've just seen 'seeked', as in 'I seeked help'. The past tense ought to sue. Where is 'sought' hiding?

OP posts:
niadainud · 10/03/2025 10:41

I saw "dose" and "dosent" on here the other day.

It's mind-blowing, really - this is Year 1 stuff.
