And the cake. How far have you got? What's the cake theme style and whereabouts are u as i have no idea.

Cake is supposed to be a basket of roses. Roses are made, cake is baked and frozen.

Will airport staff help? I fly so infrequently, I have no idea.

I was thinking paints from the US yes. I really want some split cakes and while I get get them from Ebay, they're so few and so popular that they're anywhere up to about £10 a go for the nicer colours!

Oh, and if you go directly west from Blathers as far as you can without hitting Wales (maybe a teeny bit north) that's where I am.

Number 1 cake in oven. Taking longer to cook than I thought, DD2 really needs a feed & nap... Also the cake tin I hired had no bottom so tried to line it with foilbacked parchment but it has still leaked a bit

Right, with some help from DH cake is buttercreamed. I have collapsed. Will face the next stage later.

Advance notice - if this hand is in plaster for 4 weeks, I will be a gibbering wreck. I just had to watch DH put fondant on a cake.

Cake looks ok - a bit uneven on the top (I knew I needed that cake leveller gadget I saw) will have to level it freehand in the morning. Not sure I'm brave enough to split it to buttercream the middle. Up early tomorrow to ice it - bet you are still better at it than me stealth even with broken bones! Will we get to see a photo of the finished cake?

I have a cake leveller thingy jetstar, they are good if you're a bit OCD about evenness like me.

And stealth.

Jetstar - cake levellers are indeed good. It's probably too late now, but with those number tins I have done it by propping the cake up in the tin (with ramekins /packet of biscuits /whatever fits) and using the top edge of the tin to cut it level.

I am feeling vindicated in my decision to make it a 'distressed' flower pot instead of a basket. Basket would have ended in divorce. Next step - left handed air brushing. Eek.

Oh blimey you are good getting dh to help i'd be shrieking like a banshee!

I like that!! Humphhh our village dont do a "show" kids godparents village has one in august. Wonder if i could enter something as an interloper.

It was just the bake off - village isn't big enough for a full on show - there is a fete in July sometime.

I am sure you could enter - organisers of these things are generally desperate for entries IME.

Anyway, thanks very much for the idea Blathers and to everyone for their advice. I can only aspire to get improve in the future

Noo - I want to see the number 1 cake. I bet everyone loved it. You should see some of my early cakes (not to mention the huge pile of toys essential equipment that I have amassed over the years )
