I used to come on this topic a year or so ago and post on the general hand holding support thread but it seems to have gone so I'm hoping there might be enough of us to start a new one.

I'm in my final leg of a M.Ed in Education and am currently writing my thesis which is going very slowly okay but am struggling to find time, motivation or energy to study. It would be nice to know others are in the same boat and have a place to handhold, moan, swap tips and motivate each other.

Did you get it finished dylsmum?

I had my first draft back from my dissertation supervisor today. I feel a bit disheartened because he's really picked it apart.

He said the content is good but my academic writing style needs improving.

Going to get started on it tomorrow. I hope to hand it in on Tuesday or Wednesday

dylsmum1998 · 05/05/2010 20:29

Mia, although disheartening when they pick work apart. Its not your final draft therefore you can make any suggested improvements which will make your final piece better and bump your grade.

My tutor picked apart my first draft of dissertation, but the comments made were really helpful. I have been told lots that my writing wasn't academic enough when I have had work marked but no helpful comments to show me exactly what that meant, until I showed my draft dissertation to my tutor. I wish I had had constructive criticism like that in the earlier years of my degree! I am hoping that they have made my final piece better. Should have the results by next week to show this.

I am just sat here now Mia doing the last few bits, rearranging the conclusion adding in appendices etc. before I print it.

I gave my presentation today, I never feel I have done well in them as I get so nervous I forget half of what I am meant to say, knowing this I made sure I had lots of info on my handout I gave out ot support the presentation in the hope it will bump my mark up a little.

Oh well hand in my final two assignments tomorrow and thats my degree finished- a scary yet relieving thought!

MiaWallace · 06/05/2010 07:24

Thanks for the advice dylsmum. I know you are right and that all the advice he's given me will bump up my mark. Guess I just don't take criticism well

I'm very excited for you that you will complete your degree today. I still have another 6 weeks to go.

Do you know when you will find out the overall mark for your degree yet?

i believe I get my overall mark in July. Do you know when you will get yours?

I got my dissertation mark today 86% so pleased. its not officially confirmed yet as it needs to go to the external verifier but WOW! so pleased now if only the rest of my marks could come back that high not happening!

MiaWallace · 06/05/2010 20:15

Wow dyslmum that mark is fantastic. Congratulations. What was you dissertation on?

I find out my final mark on the 21st June, the day I go on honeymoon. I'm hoping it's not going to spoil my week.

LenniralElection · 06/05/2010 21:00

Wow, dylsmum, that is brilliant! Congratulations.

I hope you get good news on the 21st Mia, I should find out on the 23rd. Seems so long to wait, am hoping I'll get an indication of my dissertation mark before then. Anything over 70% and I get a distinction for the degree, I really hope it is good enough.

dylsmum1998 · 06/05/2010 21:31

Thank you ladies

Mia am sure your final mark won't spoil your honeymoon

My dissertation was on outdoor play from the child's perspective. I could have gone on forever, but had to limit what I wanted to say because of word limit

MiaWallace · 10/05/2010 11:06

I'm now in the process of writing the final version of my dissertation.

I'm struggling a lot because I am so stubborn. My supervisor has recommended changes which I'm not so sure about.

I'm trying to make the changes he has suggested since he's the expert regarding research. BUT some of the changes he has made is regarding the topic which he has no knowledge of and I have spent the last 7 months reseraching.

Since he is the second marker I'm going to make the changes but I'm not really happy in doing so.

dylsmum1998 · 10/05/2010 22:03

Mia sounds tough trying to decide about the changes, is there a middle ground between what you want to write and what your supervisor wants you to write?

MiaWallace · 11/05/2010 07:20

I'm trying to go with the supervisors recommendations. I know I'm just being stubborn because I'm overprotective of my work.

How does it feel to be finished dylsmum? Are you bored yet?

Katymac · 11/05/2010 07:27

I've just had some great constructive criticism on a bit of coursework

It does invigorate you & make you more critical yourself (I find)

dylsmum1998 · 11/05/2010 19:26

Mia not bored yet, I still have a house to unpack! also been shopping all day today with a friend. Feel smore like a holiday from uni at the mo, ask me again in a few weeks

Katy good that you recieved constructive criticism.

MiaWallace · 12/05/2010 15:06

I finally handed in my dissertation this morning. It feels like a huge relief to be done with it. I'm happy with the finished product which is very unusual for me.

I've now got a 5000 word essay and a presentation to do and then my degree is finished!!!

dylsmum1998 · 12/05/2010 17:44

your nearly there Mia!

I just found out i got a first for my exam did not expect that, just got to wait on the rest of my assignments to be marked

MiaWallace · 12/05/2010 20:22

Well done dylsmum. You are doing so well with your marks.

Are you likely to get a first for your overall degree?

dylsmum1998 · 12/05/2010 21:16

thanks Mia, so far 50% of my marks at 2:1 the other 50 % firsts, so depends on how the marks go for work I haven't received back yet. Am trying not to get my hopes up for a first and keep in mind a 2:1 is a fantastic degree

MiaWallace · 13/05/2010 06:55

Fingers crossed for you dylsmum

dylsmum1998 · 13/05/2010 11:15

thank you. trying not to get too excited, but I just received my presentation mark 78% so another first.

MiaWallace · 13/05/2010 11:18

You are on a roll.

How many more marks have you got to come?

dylsmum1998 · 13/05/2010 11:22

i think its just 2 more assignment marks to come now. not expecting those to come through for about a fortnight as they are the essays I handed in last week.

KittyLilith · 13/05/2010 15:13

aaaargggh. I'm writing my last ever essay for my degree and have a total mental block.

It's a 5000 word essay that needs to be in on Monday. It's dd's birthday on Sunday so won't be able to get anything done on the weekend.

I have done 1250 so far. Means I have less than 3 days to write the remaining 3750 but my brain is refusing to work.
