Is this teacher banter ok?

My friend’s daughter was spraying perfume in class. The teacher jokingly said “come on now put it away, no one cares what you smell like right now”. I think the teacher was managing the situation without a power struggle but my friend thinks differently.

what are your thoughts?

I don't think it even reaches the level of banter or a joke, surely he was just stating a fact.

I can't believe this is interesting enough for the DD to have told her Mum and her Mum to have told you and you to have started a thread (and now I've responded!).

😆

Nothing to write home about here.

Comments like this are a throwaway, hopefully innocuous, statement that perfume use in a classroom is unacceptable and that there is work to do.

Far less damaging than a jump right in guns blazing approach.

Perfume use - whether its scent, body spray, boys or girls is terrible if they all use it and the windows are shut. (They all over use it too)

What your friend's daughter won't know in that room has their asthma or other allergies triggered by certain chemicals.

TappyGilmore · 07/01/2026 09:34

I wouldn’t really call it banter.

I think it’s an entirely appropriate thing to say. I’d probably have been firmer about telling her to stop but then I’m not a teacher, and what I would have said probably would have escalated the situation. The teacher here managed to make the point without escalating anything.

I’m struggling to see what’s wrong? The kid should not have been spraying. In my days as a teacher I would have probably said come on love you smell like a tarts handbag. But that was before everyone became soft and cried at the slightest thing

Was just thinking the same 😆This isn't "banter". It's the teacher saying "why the fuck are you spraying perfume in a classroom" in a polite way.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 07/01/2026 09:41

Fucking perfume in class! Was ine of the banes of my working life. Your precious mate would have hated me as I often commented on the fug of Baccarat Rouge- Blimey it smells like Boots perfume counter-someone open a window my eyes are watering, etc etc.
The most amusing didn't come from me. Was teaching about warfare in ww1 and gas attacks. One of the boys said "Were they using Lynx Africa miss?"

I don't understand what's wrong with that?

Spraying perfume in class seems quite rude

You've met teenagers recently?

MadamCholetsbonnet · 07/01/2026 09:50

Not banter.

What is your friends problem? Her DD was misbehaving.

Why was she spraying perfume in class?

This. That could well set of asthmatic children.

Your friend should be taking the perfume away.

Maddy70 · 07/01/2026 09:52

Perfectly ok

dontletmedownbruce · 07/01/2026 09:53

Which part of what the teacher said was controversial? I don’t understand why you or your friend think it is contentious. The original question needs a bit more explaining.

Moveoverdarlin · 07/01/2026 09:54

That isn’t banter. It’s a teacher getting fucked off with a girl spraying perfume in class and saying ‘Come on, put it away’.

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 07/01/2026 09:55

Your friend should concentrate on teaching her daughter some manners.

angelos02 · 07/01/2026 09:56

The mother should be telling her kid off for spraying perfume in the classroom. Her ire is directed at the wrong person and she should be embarrassed.

Your friend is one of those who loves to be offended by everyone and everything

Everyone ACCEPT the teacher in this scenario sounds like a dick.

Except

What are we accepting?

Doesn't excuse it being rude. Taking perfume into school and spraying it inside a classroom affects other pupils as well as the teacher? Some people have asthma, some people don't want someone else spraying shit inside a small area!

How would you feel if someone sprayed perfume on a bus or train you were on? It's not considerate of other people sharing the area. Shouldn't be excused because they're teenagers.

Ncforthis2244 · 07/01/2026 10:13

More ai generated crap. Ignore.

ldnmusic87 · 07/01/2026 10:26

No wonder people don't want to teach, if this is being discussed as possibly 'too much banter'

Are all posts on this site rage bait?

Pretty much, yes.

columnatedruinsdomino · 07/01/2026 10:29

So many threads at the moment about nothing so I checked your username. You had another thread about spraying perfume in school a few months ago! Honestly, you need to use common sense as you work in a school and if you now say you are ND then you should have a mentor who can advise you in these situations.

cheesysitwots · 07/01/2026 10:42

Thanks everyone! Just what I thought. Just wondered what your thoughts were about her thinking this way!

@cheesysitwots what they want the teacher to do instead?

Think she is thinking that it was commenting on hygiene in front of class

No idea why your friend would have an issue with it, the person she should have an issue with is her child spraying stuff in a classroom and not following school rules.

Why is a child wearing perfume? It's not needed as long as they're washing each day and have clean clothes.

The same reason that children at secondary school wear make-up, I guess. It's not needed, but they do it.
