Is this teacher banter ok?

My friend’s daughter was spraying perfume in class. The teacher jokingly said “come on now put it away, no one cares what you smell like right now”. I think the teacher was managing the situation without a power struggle but my friend thinks differently.

what are your thoughts?

OP posts:

And? That's it? That's the end??

Springflowersyay · 07/01/2026 00:26

@friedeggrunny you're telling everyone they we all have to agree and come to terms with the teacher being a dick.
Unless you mean ‘except’. 🙂

converseandjeans · 07/01/2026 00:30

That’s not banter - just stating a fact. Nobody is interested in what she smells like. She should be ticked off by her Mum for messing about with it in lesson time.

Nothing wrong with what the teacher said. The daughter was in the wrong for spraying perfume in a lesson. I'm guessing your friend will be telling off the teacher not her dd though 🙄

BreadInCaptivity · 07/01/2026 00:37

And the issue is what exactly?

What did your friend expect?

Cappie73 · 07/01/2026 00:37

Am I missing something ???

ChilliMochaCoco · 07/01/2026 00:41

What kind of parent thinks it's OK for a student to be spraying perfume/ body spray in a classroom?
It's worrying to have that level of entitled parent.

MangaKanga · 07/01/2026 00:53

Is it the first time in her life that the kid had been told not to do something?

She must be traumatised.

unbelievablybelievable · 07/01/2026 01:07

I pray for that teacher's sake (and all his/her colleagues) your friend doubles down and pulls her DD out to homeschool, because I guarantee the dd and your friend are absolute nightmares.

SilenceInside · 07/01/2026 01:11

My thoughts are that this isn't "banter" at all and an entirely innocuous way of reprimanding the child. Spraying perfume in class is very poor behaviour and that would be what I suggest your friend focusses on rather than the precise phrase used by the teacher to intervene. I should think a lot of teachers would have been a lot crosser with her and less conciliatory in their response.

CheeryPombear · 07/01/2026 05:17

Why is a child wearing perfume? It's not needed as long as they're washing each day and have clean clothes.

Cocomelon67 · 07/01/2026 05:58

I wouldn’t call this banter and yes- sounds completely normal thing for a teacher to say.

Philandbill · 07/01/2026 06:06

Good grief. Is your friend seriously questioning this? Why aren't they stepping up and being a responsible parent and telling their child they should be concentrating in a lesson rather than messing around with perfume and disrupting other people's learning? Or is there some massive drip feed?

BadgernTheGarden · 07/01/2026 06:06

Is the mum worried her DD smells bad and the teacher was referencing that? Otherwise no idea what could be wrong with it.

Now if they had said that's lovely perfume Ann, come to my office after school and you can tell me all about it, with a wink. It would be worth discussing!

Zippidydoodah · 07/01/2026 06:12

NuffSaidSam · 06/01/2026 23:14

I don't think it even reaches the level of banter or a joke, surely he was just stating a fact.

I can't believe this is interesting enough for the DD to have told her Mum and her Mum to have told you and you to have started a thread (and now I've responded!).

Exactly the same here! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

OP- it’s a complete non-issue.

I’m struggling to see what’s wrong? The kid should not have been spraying. In my days as a teacher I would have probably said come on love you smell like a tarts handbag. But that was before everyone became soft and cried at the slightest thing

🤣

Smeegall · 07/01/2026 06:30

That's acceptable.

Haha, our teachers would’ve said exactly this, but we’re not allowed to say things like this anymore 😀

Pixiedust49 · 07/01/2026 06:36

Why did she even take perfume to school? In a glass bottle? Ridiculous.

Oh yeah wow sack the teacher!
Spraying perfume in class (I remember it well from school) is one of the most antisocial things you can do and the teacher was being very restrained.

What precisely is your problem with it OP? I’d have been far far harsher on this undoubtedly stupid teenage girl.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/01/2026 06:52

Standard response

Pricelessadvice · 07/01/2026 07:16

What’s the problem?

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/01/2026 07:38

I sincerely hope your friend isn’t going to kick up a fuss. Teachers need to teach, not deal with justifying perfectly acceptable interactions when a child is behaving poorly and without consideration to others.

BCBird · 07/01/2026 07:42

Nothing wrong with this comment. I am a teacher. Far better to say this than berate her for having perfume out. The original comment would have the desired effect, whereas telling her off could result in.conflict. I'm a teacher it's tiring having to flip from person to .person with.personalised reactions. One size does not got all.

I’m trying to figure out what could be wrong with it!

Same.
