Is this teacher banter ok?

My friend’s daughter was spraying perfume in class. The teacher jokingly said “come on now put it away, no one cares what you smell like right now”. I think the teacher was managing the situation without a power struggle but my friend thinks differently.

what are your thoughts?

What does your friend think of the comment?

Obviously this is a non-issue! 🤦‍♀️

RedFrogs · 07/01/2026 07:49

I don’t see what’s wrong with this at all. It’s odd that the daughter even bothered to mention it to her mother and I have no idea what the mother’s issue is. They both sound like people that like to make a fuss about nothing.

sittingonabeach · 07/01/2026 07:49

Like others I am struggling with what is wrong with this, apart from the girl spraying perfume

Everyone ACCEPT the teacher in this scenario sounds like a dick.

Do you mean'Everyone EXCEPT the teacher ...'? Because what you've posted is the opposite of this.

SodOffbacktoaibu · 07/01/2026 07:57

Wish they'd ban sodding perfume at school. My autistic child was really upset when a girl did just this and got it on him. His blazer stank and I then had to wash it which I could have done without.

No need at all and what he said was mild. I would be seriously pissed off if a student did that in my room.

Tulcan · 07/01/2026 08:03

It’s not even slightly banter.

DrMickhead · 07/01/2026 08:18

LTB

Fulmine · 07/01/2026 08:23

Does your friend think this was some sort of assertion of power? If so, she needs to get used to the fact that the teacher does indeed have the power to give instructions to her daughter.

cramptramp · 07/01/2026 08:26

Of course it’s ok. She’s lucky she didn’t get the perfume confiscated.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 07/01/2026 08:28

It’s not even banter.

What exactly is supposed to be the issue here?

whatsit84 · 07/01/2026 08:31

I think that sounds like a great way of dealing with it tbh and no big deal.

Thirdchildjoy · 07/01/2026 08:46

Your friend is right that is really shit banter. She could have used:

😀 That is a cringy level of effort for these boys,
😀 That perfume’s fighting a losing battle in this room. or
😀 This really is a polishing the turd type situation.

Then it might at least qualify as bantz.

BernardButlersBra · 07/01/2026 08:50

I struggle to see the need to spray the perfume in the classroom. Your friend is best using her time and energy to discuss that with her daughter

itsthetea · 07/01/2026 08:55

Gosh teachers keep their shit together don’t they?
so calm !

AyrshireTryer · 06/01/2026 23:14

Why was she spraying perfume in class?

I've seen grown women spraying perfume in the air, so if this sort of behavoir thing can be 'nipped in the bud' by teachers at school then so much the better.

Otherwise we risk a melee of 'fragrance laying' consisting of John Paul Gaultier, Chanel, Dior, Elizabeth Arden and Charlie everytime we venture into a Duty Free Shop looking for Toblerones.

Bournetilly · 07/01/2026 08:58

There’s nothing wrong with this, it’s not banter it’s a fact.

Aplstrudl · 07/01/2026 08:59

Nothing wrong at all. Your friend is an idiot.

ScaredOfFlying · 07/01/2026 00:14

What does your friend think was inappropriate about what the teacher said? Is she suggesting it was a reference to something sexual?

I was wondering also, or implying the girl was smelly?

Exactly. Who'd be a teacher these days when even though you deal with something like this with a light touch, some parents are scrutinising your every word to try and find fault with it.

BlackCat14 · 07/01/2026 09:15

What’s the problem? How does your friend think the teacher should have handled it? What does she think about her daughter spaying perfume in class?

Are all posts on this site rage bait?

I'd say 90 % of them are.

anothercut · 07/01/2026 09:18

I feel so sorry for teachers

CautiousLurker2 · 07/01/2026 09:22

Perfectly reasonable and quite mild, actually - spraying perfume in a shared communal space is anti-social and possibly dangerous to anyone nearby who may have a respiratory condition. Keep it to your own private bathroom/home. And I say that as someone who loves perfume.

Pineappleice43 · 07/01/2026 09:24

I don't understand what's wrong with that?

Spraying perfume in class seems quite rude

grizzlyoldbear · 07/01/2026 09:26

She shouldn't be spraying perfume, people have sensitivities. Agree your friend sounds like a twat.
