MIL drops kids off Boxing Day

I’m a house proud mum of 3 that likes to entertain. For Boxing Day we invited both mine and DH family over for buffet and games. My DH’s SIL is a single mum and her parents do a lot for her. She brought her kids over stayed 5 minutes and said she wasn’t feeling well and left them with us to look after, granted her parents were there and she felt that they were in their care but they are young kids. It meant me trying to sort food, games and watch them as they need constant reminders to take shoes off, not eat upstairs etc. I suppose I’m just coming on to rant and wondering if I should say something, not invite them next time or just try to loosen up? For background, this isn’t the first time that this has happened. If she can get away with anyone else watching the kids she will.

Or maybe she has been parenting solo and is exhausted, and knows she won’t be good company and would really like a bit of time alone.

surely there are other kids there, and her kids can play with the cousins?

This.

Plus maybe she can sense you don't like her... Or she is just bloody knackered after Christmas alone with 3 kids.

Maybe she doesn't feel comfortable in your house.

The kids uncle and grandparents were both there, so I think YABU.

You also sound like my Ex SIL, thank god my brother left and found himself.

Very normal in my family and no one would bat an eye lid. If i left with a headache and tried to take my kids with me, there would be hell on 😂 If PILs are supposed to be supervising, then ask them to supervise. Boxing day is a family day and we all just push on and relax a bit.
How many times did their shoes need to be off/on??

I guess we're all different. If you find it to much OP, maybe don't host next time.

I actually don’t dislike her, we get on well apart from the fact that I’m used to babysit her children. Should that not work both ways? My family all help each other out, we all chip in to care for my grandfather who is end of life and share this role which is hard going between us. I don’t find life easy either but I can’t just be the one helping especially given that it’s Boxing Day and it was a chance to see my family. I think they all just think ‘she will do it’ cause I get on with it and don’t say anything to them I’m just allowing it to happen to be kind but now am at the point where I feel that it’s enough!

Would be the case in my family too, all the cousins are always together but we help each other out and know that none of us would leave our children on Boxing Day unless we were really unwell as we wouldn’t want too.

Stop inviting her, she probably wasn't even unwell.
