Stand off about a crop top

My 8 year old DD has a school disco tomorrow. She would like to wear shiny Nike leggings & a sport type crop top as this would make her feel nice, it’s her style & her 2 friends are wearing crop tops (to me this looks like a bra & I only bought it for her to wear in the house). She says d she will look like a baby if I dress her & everyone will laugh.

It just doesn’t sit right with me, think it’s in appropriate & don’t like tight skirts, bikini is or crop tops at all on kids. It’s just my preference.

I told her she can wear it under a zipped up Hazmat🤣 this wasn’t received well so I said denim jacket.

I really want her to feel nice but I want her to wear it really.

WWYD?

I agree & I really hope it will be a different trend too! Fingers crossed! I love long dresses too!

If my DD dressed me, I’d end up with a bra, hot pants & some long boots🤣

Hahahaha these kids are so daft.
I admit I am a bit of a style queen to my nieces (13 and 11) I have younger kids and would rather dress as a penguin and a power ranger most of the time, so I told my SIL that every time I saw them I would have something long on and you can bet your last dime they will want the same.

I am with you. Crop tops are for older teems / adukts same as bikinis. Kids should be wearing kiddy clothing not adult clothing shrunk down.
Whoever is making these clothes has some issues (P).

Maybe suggest a knee length dress /skirt with some leggings?

This is great! I wish I had that much influence over my DD’s style🤣

you never will as their mum hahahaha it’s like everything, fought against eating veg for years ‘until Aunty Lindsey said it’s cool to eat veg’. Will never tidy their rooms ‘until they saw Aunty Lindsey’s very tidy house’. Oh mum are we allowed coffee ‘like Aunty Lindsey has’ haha oh that’s a point, I don’t really drink so that may be a useful lever in a fee years time 🤣🤣🤣
hahaha I did once hear my brother muttering ‘if she told you to jump in the river would you do it?’ Haha probably yes! They will see the light one day. I am pretty boring!

Well done for the outcome, you sound a lovely mum.

I'd let her wear it.

Btw I have a 16yo DD and we have a really good, close relationship. That's more important to me than what she chooses to wear.

This. Exactly this.

TheaBrandt · 05/06/2024 22:06

Hang onto your hat for the teen years op! DH and I try not to die on this hill but our nearly 16 year old pushes the boundaries big time we have to draw a line but its hard as you want to have a good relationship and she's a lovely girl in every way except occasional dodgy outfit choices!

This I would be ok with as it’s longer & it looks like a child’s crop top! The one she’s chosen is much shorter like a bra (this is a pass me down from her friend so it’s also a bit big for her which is slightly better I guess) . But still, looks like a bra to me!

Ah ok- this has changed my opinion then. I was thinking of a crop top that’s more of a top- this does look like underwear to me too.

Vitriolinsanity · 05/06/2024 23:16

Sanity and compromise win the day OP.

Nicely done.

I can close my eyes tight and try not to see little girls on crops as being right on with the they can wear what they like gang.

It doesn't work. They spend the entire time pulling the tops down and the leggings up. Whilst the girls that wear a dress/leggings/Converse combo have a blast because they don't have to care.

duckydoo234 · 05/06/2024 23:38

I wouldn't let my 8 year old wear that. Lots of her friends wear crop tops and I think they look trashy, totally inappropriate for that age.

fashionqueen0123 · 05/06/2024 23:57

Yeah that’s a bra! I’d go to somewhere like Sainsbury’s which has lots of the active wear/dance stuff on the shelves for that age but it’s bright and patterned and not that short, if she wants one to wear out of the house in the summer!
