When did you let your parents/siblings visit your newborn

When you had your child, how long did you wait for parents/in laws/siblings to meet them?

Can't see any NHS guidance on this one

Mine met my DS in the hospital and then pretty much whenever I was happy to have guests. I did ask people to wash their hands though and no one came round if they had a cold.

With the eldest, our parents came to the hospital. MIL's expression of joy when I said that of course she could pick DD up is one of my happiest memories of that time.

Siblings live at a distance, so they came when they could.

DD2 was born right at the end of the first lockdown, our parents came the day after we got out of hospital.

The lack of NHS guidance is your clue that there’s no need to wait if you’re ready for visitors.

Even maybes in SCBU are allowed visitors. DS was kept in and a visit from the grandparents really cheered me up.

I let people see my kids whenever they wanted after they were born.

For our first child, both sets of parents came straight away when baby still in hospital and hours old.

Siblings lived far away so not sure when they came to visit.

2nd child...both sets of parents lived far away, but husbands aunt was local so she came to see baby the afternoon he was born. He was born 9am in morn and I was home for 4pm same day.

Didn't occur for me to look up guidance on it? Are you worried about something?

I'm not sure why there would be NHS guidelines on this. Just be sensible and avoid visits with anyone actively unwell.

My DC1 met their grandparents at 10 minutes old. That was a bit soon for me so DC2 and 3 were 4 hours old then 1 day old.

Siblings came along as soon as they could usually at about 24-48 hours old.

Mum and my siblings came to the hospital, as did my in laws. My OH’s siblings came to visit us at home the day we were discharged from the hospital. My dad was ill at the time so didn’t meet them til weeks later when we could drive to visit.

I’m not sure there is NHS guidance - though hospital visits are still under Covid regulations aren’t they so probably aren’t allowed?

I really enjoyed them meeting the babies so early - and it’s quite nice to have the photos now of the with their uncles and aunts in those very early days.

My parents visited me in hospital when both dcs were less than 12 hours old. My siblings visited in the hospital with dc1 the next day as we stayed in for 3 days, and with dc2 came the evening of the first day we were home.

Friends and other family came in the first week or so with dc1, and in far fewer numbers with dc2 (cos second child 😎)

All were short, joyful meet the baby and have a cuddle visits and no hassle to me. I just sat on the sofa and had cups of tea and biscuits brought to me.

Assuming all is well, newborns are pretty robust and have some immunity from you still. Obvious caveats that you don't want someone with a dripping cold around you, but that's as much because having a cold when you've got a newborn is rubbish (unfortunately inevitable with germ-ridden other children when you're on to dc2).

Family visited as soon as I left the hospital pretty much.
I wish I waited a few days or even weeks now as I don't have fond memories of it. I wish I used them early days to recover and bond properly.

Everyone came to see them in hospital. Constant stream of visitors. It was lovely

My sister was there when she was born (sorta - C -Section and DH came in the room but she was there in the recovery room) - thankfully because DH was clueless.

DH's parents, the day after we came out of hospital so day 6 I think - DD was poorly and under SCBU.

My parents, dunno, week 2? They live in Spain but when they flew over.

As soon as possible after their births. I couldn't wait to share them with family and friends. I didn't find it intrusive at all.

My DM met DD at 3 days old as it was the day after I got home from hospital, PIL the day after that - had we been home earlier they'd have come sooner. Siblings and our grandparents came the following week I think (obviously not all at the same time).

My parents were at the hospital so saw us about 30 minutes later. Siblings and in-laws the next day.

DS met the in laws at 3 days and my parents at 2 weeks old (because they decided to book a holiday for just after my due date!)

My parents, bil and some close friends came to the hospital. Mil and fil live abroad and didn't come for a few weeks. There is no need to wait.

It was about 5/6 days I think. They aren’t local and I stayed in voluntarily in a postnatal unit to get feeding established for 3 nights (which was amazing). So I think it was the day after I got home. Soon as practical basically given where they live etc.

DD1 was about half an hour old! DD2 about 24hrs old.

My mum was there for the births of dc 1and 2 so pretty much instantly!

Otherwise everyone met them within the first 24-48 hours depending on where everyone was and how inconvenient the time of birth was (looking at you dc3).

Parents and siblings within 24 hours. In-laws have never met them. They're not interested.

At the hospital

My parents came to see Dd in hospital, about 2 hours after she was born.

Next day I had my brother & sister, their partners, my uncle and my grandma over for the evening when we got home from hospital.

Every day after that I had people round to meet Dd. It was lovely to see how much joy she brought to people and I was pretty chill about everything. Made for a relaxed recovery tbh!

My parents about an hour after birth, in laws came down two days later, husbands siblings and families day I came home from hospital so within the week, my best friends while I was in hospital still, my son was passed round like pass the parcel, it was lovely.

COVID baby so 2 days after when I was discharged. My dad cried. It was magic.

My mum was in the delivery suite with me, in laws the next day which was a Thursday and then siblings came that weekend. My nephew had conjunctivitis so we didn't see him til he was better.

It's just what you're comfortable with, be sensible and anyone who's poorly has to wait.
