My Son is 3 in April. My Daughter was 12 two days ago. My Son doesn't have a clue it's his birthday soon and certainly isn't 'looking forward to it'. My Daughter did have presents bought before things escalated but understands her celebrations are on hold...Honestly, save your money, none of us have any idea what will happen tomorrow let alone in a few weeks!

Hoggleludo · 19/03/2020 19:09

I've explained to my children. Whose birthday is soon that they might have to forgo presents. But we will still have the most awesome day!!!

Can you not say that to her?

Bluebell121 · 19/03/2020 19:09

@thelittlefox no one said Facebook I said I got a email!

I can see that cancelling her party must be the most upsetting thing. However smart she is, it’s hard for a (Just turned) 3 year old to understand why this would be necessary. They just about understand about germs and I suppose they might understand that there are some rules that parents have to keep because it’s the law but honestly it’s a lot to ask her to wrap her head around. You probably feel like presents is going to be one of the only ways to make the day special and that’s making you fret.

Try and stay calm. One thing our big supermarkets have is toys. Argos are still working and they do click & collect from Sainsburys. Don’t panic and waste the money you do have on things you don’t really want. I can see why you’re worrying but there’s nothing to do but keep an eye on everything and start googling the specific stuff you want. If there’s a particular toy you’re trying to track down then people on here are really helpful in looking out for it for you.

Cake and food treats will help make it special. Balloons and party hats and special paper plates with a favourite character.....these are all things that 3 year olds really remember. There’ll be lots of little things you can do to make it feel like a special day. You’re just so worried now that it’s hard to think straight.

I can't see anything online about Smyths closing down?

0hT00dles · 19/03/2020 19:16

We had this the other day. My dd was 6.

We had to cancel her birthday party, couldn't see grandparents or family on the day as that's the rule here in ireland.

I managed to get some bits from smyths though (had to run into the store as no click and collect on those bits🤦🏼‍♀️!).

A lot of online shops or indie stores are doing great sales, and have great stuff.

Could you go to an independent online store? Most have a great selection of toys etc that will last.

Another idea would be to buy vouchers etc and promise her a treat day. That's what I've done.

Also, if she doesn't have a scooter, a micro scooter is great!!!

Bluebell121 · 19/03/2020 19:16

@Hollyhead thankyou for the heads up I'll check it out now

@0hT00dles oh sorry to hear that! I'm going to try look online again most things I had saved in my baskets have gone out of stock , really wanted to follow guidelines and no go out at all but if I have to I will have to run to the store and grab what I can

OP

People on here will hang on to the same old crap. Forget the river island part... If she's only three there's tons you can do with her.

Get her involved in making her birthday cake and let her decorate it - messy but she'll love it.

Grab her a few small gifts ie plushy toys, her favourite sweets, party bag fillers and do a scavenger hunt. Make her a little map and cut out arrows.

Do her a blanket picnic - blanket on the floor sandwiches, cakes, fruits ect

Make Pom Pom animals

Bluebell121 · 19/03/2020 19:20

@Moodymagpie yes good idea! Tried getting ingredients for making cakes and cupcakes but unfortunately everything had gone everytine I try , can't really get shopping as it is so that's upsetting

thelittlefox · 19/03/2020 19:21

Sorry if I sounded harsh, it has wound me up slightly that River Island thought that telling me I could still buy from them was "Very Important".

Don't worry about your daughter's birthday. No amount of gifts is as valuable to a child as a parent who loves them, and you clearly do. These are overwhelming times, you've got ages to sort something out. Give yourself a break. Brew

Bluebell121 · 19/03/2020 19:23

@thelittlefox that's fine , it wasn't the river island thing I was worried about that was just a example of what I saw riverisland was first then smyths and another store was next then I got a email from river island to say there closing as of tommorow so I instantly thought since they said smyths is next that's it

Ahh OP...

That sucks.. Still scavenger hunts and blanket picnics are a good idea... Failing that buy a normal Victoria spo ge and let her decorate that with pen icing.. Plenty of cake still in the shops.. Around by me there are anyway. I hope you find something for her... I have 3 girls so I know it's crushing...

People forget that they might not know but you do...

Pentium85 · 19/03/2020 19:26

I wish my worries were this small...

Vinylsamso · 19/03/2020 19:27

Go to Argos tonight or tomorrow. Simple.

Bluebell121 · 19/03/2020 19:28
