Seems to be a few OU students here, so what are you all sudying? Are you new to it or been doing it for years?

I am on the verge of signing up for Introducing Environment (Y161) a short 10 pt course, I will have to double check the finances though.

I have also started doing one of the free units on Openlearn to get me into the swing of it and I was surprised how much I am enjoying getting the grey matter thinking again.

am doing a bunch this year

the maths entry suite MU120 MST121 and MS221

and a biology/chemistry one the fats of life

its 100 credits in total

Fillyjonk · 03/02/2007 22:07

i worked out about £4000 for a degree.

which is a lot cheaper than going through uni for me, not least cos i'd have full fees (already have a degree).

could be more if you choose a degree (like me: chemistry) that requires you to do residentials.

I started DD100 - Intro to Social Sciences in October and I am enjoying it and finding it quite easy to fit study into my daily life.

Have also started U205 - Health and Disease this month, which is level 2 and requires 16 hrs study a week so will probably be a bit of a struggle with 3 kids and a dh who works nights - Luckily I have a supportive mil who is happy to help with the kids!

Hoping to go on to D218 - Social Policy: Welfare, Power and Diversity in October this year.

Like the sound of D218, 16hrs sounds a lot, this week I have squeezed in about 4 hrs50min. I am surpirised I didn't think I had done that much, I thought I would keep track to see how much I could fit in once doing this for real. This unit was to take about 8hrs and I recon I will have it finished in another 60mins, so either I am quick or stupid and missed half of it .

Don't know how I will manage if I get a full time job though.

I do think they err on the side of caution with the amount of time you are meant to spend her unit.

Fillyjonk · 04/02/2007 07:00

each unit, am not that confident that the OU is female

Chilimama · 04/02/2007 10:59

Lol!

I have to say I manage to do DD100 in half the recommended time for each block - Probably 4 or 5 hrs excluding the TMA's which I am getting fairly high marks in so I must be doing something right despite feeling like I am not doing enough.

I am just being a bit more careful with Health and Disease because it seems a bit more involved and because it's level 2.

I finish DD100 in May/June so hopefully I will have more time to spend on U205 when it starts getting tougher!

Skribble · 15/02/2007 23:30

Well I have signed up for a short course y157 Understanding society. It starts in March. Once I have done that I think I will be doing D100, but we will see.

I hope to get £200 per year from the Scottish ILA and I will be using my clubcard points too.

So here goes [gulp]

I'm doing K100 Introduction to health and social care. (60 points)

It's my first year with the OU

goblinqueen · 20/02/2007 15:32

E301 The Art of English.

My first assignment is due in on Friday and I'm alternatively crying (in my defense I am pre-menstrual!) and feeling positive. I hate the first assignment of a new course because I feel so lost and it seems so hard sigh.

Skribble · 20/02/2007 23:48

Well the big box arrived today with allmy course stuff for Y157 Understanding society. I had to laugh the box had URGENT ACADEMIC MATERIALS on it and the delivery guy was so serious .

It is an openings course and doesn't look to scary, the worst thing is waiting for my first phone tutorials. I hate dealing with people on the phone at the best of times.

goblinqueen, I am in same boat - tma01 (D318) due in next tuesday

I've been sitting at the computer since 9am wrestling with the frankfurt school

and my tutor is terrifying bond villain type

aaaargh

Marscentio · 20/02/2007 23:57

I have the most amazing tutor for my A300 course. She's one of the writers of it I think. Talking to some other A300 students I get the impression that my tutor is the best of the bunch. I have my first TMA due in on Friday. Guess how much I've done of the 1,500 words.............?

That's right.... nadah! Sigh............

Molesworth · 20/02/2007 23:58

Eek mars, have you time to get it done? Are you using this new fangled eTMA system?

@ mars' non-villain tutor

Marscentio · 21/02/2007 00:03

Yes I get to use the eTMA system which doesn't look that bad actually. Our tutor made us send her a dummy one to be sure that she got them and that we received them back with her comments. The joy of the eTMA system is that I can send my work in at minutes to midnight on Friday. Also it means that she can mark them and send them right back without the wait of them going through Walton Hall.

I have to watch a DVD of The Cherry Orchard, but so far every time I've tried to watch it I've fallen asleep. Not a good start I fear... especially as I really want to do well for this tutor. Sigh.........

beckybrastraps · 21/02/2007 00:06

Ooh - I'm using eTMAs this time round too. Found the booklet very scary (if it all goes haywire it's your fault and you will fet zero) but my tutor seemed much more relaxed about things.

I don't think I've introduced myself on this thread actually - I'm doing DD303 (Cognitive Psychology)

Molesworth · 21/02/2007 00:11

I'm doing an ancient course (on its final presentation) with tapes and videos

Tape 1 has already died in ancient tape playing machine

TMAs to be sent and returned the old fashioned slow way

Marscentio · 21/02/2007 00:23

My French course uses tapes and tape recorders. Had to borrow a tape recorder. No fancy tiny tapes in dictaphones... oh no. Proper tapes with a tape recorder. lol My kids look at it really suspiciously.

Molesworth · 21/02/2007 00:27

How's the French course going and which course is it exactly mars?

I really want to improve my French but I'm not sure the "OU Way with Languages" works for me after dropping out of a Spanish level 1

Marscentio · 21/02/2007 00:29

I'm doing LZX192 or is that LXZ192?????????????? Bon Depart. It's great. I got 94% for my first TMA and 100% for my second. I'm loving it. If you need to book a double room with a bath or shower in Martinique... gimme a call because I can book it for you.

I had to record myself on tape doing just that. My tutor was very very impressed. I'm loving it and thinking of doing more languages after my literature degree is complete.

Molesworth · 21/02/2007 00:31

WELL DONE!!!

Is it an online only course that uses that Lyceum software?

Molesworth · 21/02/2007 00:31

oops should have said "Bravo!"

Marscentio · 21/02/2007 00:33

No you can do it with face to face tutorials. I did the online one as I'm already doing a course and couldn't be arsed to add an extra tutorial with the hour each way travel. Lyceum is pretty good, occasional problems but c'est la vie (oh yeah.... look at the use of french). J'etude la francais!

Molesworth · 21/02/2007 00:35

ooh if there's an autumn start date I might have to sign up, merci beaucoup Mars!

Marscentio · 21/02/2007 00:35

I've gone to bed Moley. I have two girls to take out about town tomorrow and still haven't decided where to go. I have a client that could go into labour at any minute and a TMA to write. I should sleep. lol

Sign up for the language course. You know you wanna!
