Seems to be a few OU students here, so what are you all sudying? Are you new to it or been doing it for years?

I am on the verge of signing up for Introducing Environment (Y161) a short 10 pt course, I will have to double check the finances though.

I have also started doing one of the free units on Openlearn to get me into the swing of it and I was surprised how much I am enjoying getting the grey matter thinking again.

Had my details of my course tutor today, just waiting for my materials now so that I can get started. Not actually sure what my course materials consists of lol.

Molesworth · 21/02/2007 12:23

ooh exciting nutty!

lilibet · 21/02/2007 16:38

Got my first level2 TMA back today - 75% woo hoo!!

Realise its a bit poxy at the side of Mars's efforts (you swot Mars!!) but I was very very pleased with myself.

The thing that my tutor has pulled me up on is my use of refereencing and bibliography. I referenced int he text of my essay as per the OU book and then did a full bibbly bobbly at the end, but she has seperated that out into thwo things a references bit and a bibliography bit.

What's the difference and what am I doing wrong?

Well done lilibet!

Are you doing a humanities course?

I have never been asked to do both reference list and bibliography, but I'm studying soc sci.

Mind you one thing I've learned is that all tutors are not the same when it comes to referencing

Molesworth · 21/02/2007 18:03

PS Mars re: the French, I'm going to buy the OU's short French study pack to brush up. I've got an ancient French 'O' level so I'd like to start with the 'fresh start in french' rather than the absolute beginners one. Thanks for the tips and kick up the bum to look into it

tia2 · 21/02/2007 18:06

hi all! im starting an open uni course in march havent studied for ten years. is it easier to learn when your younger or older do you think guys?

Molesworth · 21/02/2007 18:08

hi tia

it's impossible to generalise really

personally i believe i get far more out of studying now (pushing 40) than i would have done at 18

lilibet · 21/02/2007 18:11

yes. I'm doing religion, but I've done humanities stuff before and never had this

Bit of both I think Tia, it's easier to abosrb stuff when you are younger but you appreciate the knowledge more when you are older and you realise that it's worthwhile. It's also easier to study if it's something you're interested in rather than something you have to do - like me and geography at school!

My 13yr old ds thinks that both dh and I are mad for studying when we don't have to!

tia2 · 21/02/2007 18:12

ive got to check to see if my brain is still working! im sure im on robot mode half the time with my three kids! lol

lilibet · 21/02/2007 18:12

What course are you doing Tia?

Marscentio · 21/02/2007 18:13

Moley... trust me! Just jump straight in with Bon Depart. Honestly... it's not that bad at all. (There are people doing it who've never seen a french word before).

Don't fret Lillibet... I haven't done my first Literature TMA yet. Ooh bother.. gotta go. Tutorial tonight.

lilibet · 21/02/2007 18:16

Mars - you're a humanities bird - when you get back on here talk to me about references and a bibliography please?

tia2 · 21/02/2007 18:17

well i done my gnvq 2 and 3 ten years ago so gonna start out with understanding children to recap on my studying skills then hopefully teaching assistant for kids with special needs!

Molesworth · 21/02/2007 18:27

I don't want to do Bon Depart though because I already know a lot of the grammar (my vocab is really rusty though!), Ouverture is level 1 but starts at a slightly higher level so I don't have to go through the absolute basics again iykwim

goblinqueen · 21/02/2007 18:56

My TMA has been posted!! So it will get there 1 day before the cut-off!! A record for me, all last year they got there on the cut-off day!

But I don't want to ever see it again! No no I don't want it back! I can only hope I've at least passed, even if it's crappy!

nikkie · 21/02/2007 21:05

I am really struggling with the electronic system .Haven't got my practice etma back as I can't download it.And now have started another 10pointer, genetics, and can't even get into their system, doesn't bode well does it.

cori · 25/02/2007 21:21

Hello every one, just seen this thread. I am taking my 5 th OU course this year. Will hope to graduate next year. I am doing A318 'Art in the Twentith century' , this is my first third year level course so I am bit nervous about it. Also I have two years off between the last course and this one so am not quite sure how I am going to juggle a 5 year old, a 9 month old and working part time.
My first TMA is due the 9th of March. Not started yet. but am very pleased to be able send via email..
When is everyones first TMA due.?

Molesworth · 25/02/2007 23:13

Hi Cori

I just started my first level 3 course too (D318) - TMA01 due on Tuesday (posted yesterday )

Let us know how you get on with yours - I do admire you doing OU with small children and job!

KirstyMumto2boys · 27/02/2007 16:44

Hiya

I've just received the materials for my first OU course I'm doing the Y156 Understanding Children then the K100 Understanding Health and Social Care in October - hopiong to gain a BA (Hons) in Health and Social Care, lol not sure what I'm meant to be doing though, am I meant to work through the course book thingy that came in the materials?

Nome · 27/02/2007 17:02

Hi, I've just signed up to do T189 in Digital photography. Anyone else doing something like this?

RosaLuxembourg · 12/03/2007 13:53

Blimey found this forum a bit late. I'm doing A200 European History 1400-1900. First TMA is due in on Friday so I'm in the throes of it at the moment - finding it really tricky to figure out what they want. Anyone else doing anything history-related?

Molesworth · 12/03/2007 22:15

Blimey Rosa (love the name btw) that's quite a broad sweep for a single course isn't it?!

Tinker · 12/03/2007 22:27

Lurking here but I did the Ouverture course a few years ago - had to use my daughter's Fisher Price tape recorder for my TMAs

RosaLuxembourg · 12/03/2007 22:48

Yes it is Molesworth old chap. There are six modules, I've just finished the first which covers the Hundred Years War, the Valois Dukes of Burgundy and the War of the Roses. Module Two is the Reformation and Module Three is the English Civil War (really looking forward to that one). Then there is the Atlantic Slave Trade, the French Revolutions and European Imperialism 1870-1914.
Very fast and furious, I hope I can keep up. Dreading August as there is a lot to do that month and how am I supposed to cope with the school holidays?

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldinghands · 12/03/2007 22:50

I am doing K204 (working with children and families). Last year did U212 (childhood) and year before that, DD121 & DD122 (An intro to social sciences.)
