Seems to be a few OU students here, so what are you all sudying? Are you new to it or been doing it for years?

I am on the verge of signing up for Introducing Environment (Y161) a short 10 pt course, I will have to double check the finances though.

I have also started doing one of the free units on Openlearn to get me into the swing of it and I was surprised how much I am enjoying getting the grey matter thinking again.

Oh I didn't know that this section even existed until today!

I have just finished AZX103 Introduction To Humanities. The course was really interesting but the tutor was a bit of a twat and there was a lot of one-up-manship in the online tutorials (exactly what was mentioned earlier "Oh dearie me, I am sending in my TMA" and the thing isn't due in for 2 weeks!) The tutor's attitude did affect how I looked on the TMAs but in the long run did not stop me enjoying the course.

I am about to sign up for A215 Creative Writing and A200 Exploring History: Medieval to modern 1400-1900 I think. Would like to eventually get a degree in Humanities with History and Literature.

And I quite liked using the eTMA, at least you don't have to rely on the postie!

Hi, is anyone doing DD121? I'm not doing too good.

How do you all find time to do your courses? I thought I'd find it easier but in reality when I've finished work I just wanna fetch the kids from nursery and play with them. I don't think I'm cut out for it

jellybeans · 29/06/2007 19:25

I am thinking of doing either DD100 or the Openings Society. What level would you recommend? I have done an access course a few years ago and 2 GCSE's this last year inc Maths. How hard is level one for someone abit out of practice with essays etc? Would I be best to start slow? Thanks for any advice!

scotsgirl · 02/07/2007 13:03

I'd recommend taking it slow at first. i did DD100 last session and found it a bit harder than I'd anticipated, even though I have been in further education before. I think i probably set myself too high a standard though, which meant I beat myself up about the assignments. What was most difficult with DD100 was keeping the momentum going, as there was no exam at the end to focus on.

lilibetpotter · 03/07/2007 09:27

Twoifbysea, I'm thinking of that for next year. Am doing A217 at the moment

lilibetpotter · 03/07/2007 09:29

In fact, I've jsut seen someone else talking about level two, so can I direct you to my lonely little thread here

Ok, question some of you might be able to answer positively for me (!!). Is anyone studying for a degree or MA with the OU purely for enjoyment - not for professional development? I am thinking of taking the MA in Literature (I have a good honours degree) but not feeling that confident about telling people in my family etc...feels very self indulgent...but I am at home with a 2 yr old a lot of the time, ttc no.2 and need something to keep my brain occupied. I only work a couple of days a week but am thinking of tailing off for a bit if/when we have a second baby so will have more time on my hands...well, sort of! Ok, not really with another baby but...arghhh...i have to use my brain somehow. Positive stories anyone? Is it worth it? Did you cope?

nimnom · 12/07/2007 20:08

Loveangel,
I am studying for a MSc in Maths with the OU just for the love of maths!! Yes, I know I'm a bit strange. I started in 2003 when ds1 was one and will graduate in 2010. In the meantime I've had another baby. It's bloody hard work but the feeling you get when you pass each course is fantastic. I do wonder sometimes if I've completely lost the plot, especially when I'm sitting waiting for the exam to start! But it is the thing that keeps me sane and the pros definitely outwiegh the cons. I think it's good for the kids to see that I'm studying too. My ds1 used to ask me what wortds I was learning each day!
I started with an openings course which is a short course to give you a taste of distance learning. They're not too expensive and give a good idea of what it's like.

Go for it. It's one of the best things I've ever decided to do.

MarsLady · 12/07/2007 20:16

I'm studying Literature for sheer enjoyment

Naartjie · 16/07/2007 22:30

Cool, I just found this.

I am studying Creative Writing. It's my 4th year at the OU- studying for a degree in English Lit.

MarsLady- I did A300 a couple of years ago. What do you think of the texts you have to study? I thought some were a bit naff.

Highlander · 17/07/2007 16:44

ooh, Naartje - how are you finding creative writing? Would love to do this. Can you do it at PG level?
