What word do your children use for female genitals?

Apologies if this has been asked before, but this is becoming an urgent issue in our household. Ds is 2.5 and has just started asking "Where is your willy, Mummy?" I told him women and girls don't have willies...and then froze.

I don't want him to think that girls just have an empty area where a willy should be, I want him to realise we have our own special bits, but I cannot settle on a word I feel comfortable with.

"Vagina" is so medical. "Flower" and all those sort of words seem too cutesie. I feel "fanny" is the right equivalent to "willy", and did try it, but I just cringed saying it to ds and felt even worse when he repeated it. I obviously did not sound convincing anyway as he has reverted to calling it a bottom. Help! Sorry if I have rejected your family's choice of name by the way, I don't think any of them are wrong or anything, just don't feel right saying them myself. Am I hopelessly uptight?

Fanny to me is a bit rude, i only ever hear it round here used in an offensive or sexual way ive even heard it used as an insult. I think if my dd said fanny she'd probably get herself (or me) in trouble at school! And my mum disapproves of me saying bum bum instead of bottom so she would not be best pleased at fanny. She also disapproves of belly instead of tummy!!

I did think about this when dd was a baby as had a friend with an older daughter who didnt know what to call it either. Mine was always my tickle as a child because it, or the bit just above it below your tummy to be clear on this, was ticklish. But i felt now with everything being a bit more sensitive and pc that this prob wasnt very appropriate. But we used to spend alot of time with my friend whos daughter of the same age called it her mini, ive absolutely no idea why but she picked that up and its just stuck.

Minge is, apparently 17th century slang, of Romany origin and used a lot in Polari- gay slang popular in the early to mid 20th century. Very Julian and Sandy from Round The Horne.

zippitippitoes · 09/09/2005 23:02

LOL can't imagine where dd2 got it from..I never heard it before but it's common (sic) round here apparently..

aloha · 09/09/2005 23:03

Kenneth Williams used it a lot. That's why I like it!

bettythebuilder · 09/09/2005 23:06

I've always leaned towards "twinkle", but the pussy next door is called that.

By the way, I do mean the neighbour's cat.

ickleharpsichordcarrier · 09/09/2005 23:14

no lonelymum you're not wiping your vagina it's your VULVA
come on ladies - vulva. V.U.L.V.A... give it a go...

if you have difficulty then try saying Volvic like the bottled water and then just take a quick left turn at the end.
don't mind fanny btw but it is still used a term of abuse
(PS it's LAYbia as in labour. god I seem to be obsessed with female genitalia tonight)

aloha · 09/09/2005 23:16

When choosing names for dd dh and I would get to the end of our inspiration and then fall about childishly suggesting things like 'vulva' 'vagina' and 'Labia' as possible names. But they are quite pretty words, I think. 'Oi, Labia, put that down and come back here now!'

MrsSpoon · 09/09/2005 23:18

IHC, using that pronunciation I would be worried I would say "Volvo" instead!

bettythebuilder · 09/09/2005 23:19

And did you know that Leeds And Bradford International Airport had to drop the "And" because of the acronym?

starlover · 09/09/2005 23:20

is that true?

puffywuffybum · 09/09/2005 23:22

I can't cope, this is so bloody funny

starlover · 09/09/2005 23:23

my mum once asked me if i knew of a singer called puffy wuffy

zippitippitoes · 09/09/2005 23:23

come to the conclusion I've no idea how I say labia (wonder why?)

but I do say Baaaaaaath

unlike some of my children we are the half aned halfves

puffywuffybum · 09/09/2005 23:24

......and did you starlover?????????

starlover · 09/09/2005 23:25

no!
she meant puff daddy

bettythebuilder · 09/09/2005 23:28

The Leeds/Bradford thing is absolutely true.

Luckily they spotted it before the headed notepaper was printed up.

puffywuffybum · 09/09/2005 23:30

bless ya Mum starlover

Heathcliffscathy · 09/09/2005 23:43

don't understand the not calling it anything at all.

v bad imo

fanny fine. vulva even better if you can bring yourself to.

we are so so f*cked up about female sexuality.

ickleharpsichordcarrier · 09/09/2005 23:54

Sophable - how right you are. When my dd grows up I want her to:
have a healthy attitude to sex
be completely relaxed about her body and her sexuality and
have a healthy relationship with food

pleeeeeease tell me that's possible because, frankly, I don't know one woman in my acquaintance who has all three.
god I really ought to go to bed....

Heathcliffscathy · 09/09/2005 23:56

it's possible harpsichord.....your dd will be one of them

Heathcliffscathy · 09/09/2005 23:59

you've got me thinking now tho and i'm with you... i don't know one either...i'm fine for first two, finally after a lot of working that stuff out...but the last isn't good, i'm not massively overweight, but don't have a happy relationship with food no....

lilsmum · 10/09/2005 00:20

minnie

thats what i called it when i was little, so the word has now passed on to dd.

Aero · 10/09/2005 00:51

We say 'minnie' too lm! I decided to use that term many years ago after being floored when I child I looked after referred to it as her 'pussy'! I just didn't get it, and the parent saw no harm in it. Each to their own, but 'pussy', to my mind is something I'd expect to see in a porn mag!
