What word do your children use for female genitals?

Apologies if this has been asked before, but this is becoming an urgent issue in our household. Ds is 2.5 and has just started asking "Where is your willy, Mummy?" I told him women and girls don't have willies...and then froze.

I don't want him to think that girls just have an empty area where a willy should be, I want him to realise we have our own special bits, but I cannot settle on a word I feel comfortable with.

"Vagina" is so medical. "Flower" and all those sort of words seem too cutesie. I feel "fanny" is the right equivalent to "willy", and did try it, but I just cringed saying it to ds and felt even worse when he repeated it. I obviously did not sound convincing anyway as he has reverted to calling it a bottom. Help! Sorry if I have rejected your family's choice of name by the way, I don't think any of them are wrong or anything, just don't feel right saying them myself. Am I hopelessly uptight?

My little dd wants to call it 'Barbie'!

Micku5 · 09/09/2005 20:24

My dd was playing on her swing this afternoon and she sat on it a bit funny and then said "mummy my nunu is hurting" which would have been ok.... but she said it in front of my in laws, a couple of friends and her cousin. I left it to dh to explain!!

EvesBigFatMama · 09/09/2005 20:27

we call mine "my fluff" - very confusing when i tell dd theres a bit of fluff on the floor...and i think it hilarious when she gos into the bathroom when dp in and says i can see your boobies daddy(taking into account she actually means his two veg!)

Me and dp always called them 'bits' for everyone - however dd (3.8) has started correcting me and telling me she has got a bum because there is nothing sticking out and only boys have bits.
Well that's me told!!

spidermama · 09/09/2005 20:30

I think there needs to be a consensus. There's not point in us all calling it something completely different. Language is about communicating.

Also I think we need to send out a positive message to our daughters and stop projecting shame and confusion on to them.

But as mentioned on a previous thread, I've had two very large glasses of wine already this evening so won't necessarily stand by these assertions come morning.

WE call dd's her girly bits...
Ds had boys bits too... Now we call it his tadger (he's 11 and finds this hysterically funny)

spidermama · 09/09/2005 20:44

When we were kids, and I can't believe I'm about to admit this to a bunch of strangers, we used to call it our emby. If my sister's reading this (new to mumsnet by the way) my apologies for letting this out of the bag.
Mum says it had something to do with a nurse pointing to the area and saying '...in between'. We heard it as 'Embytween' so shortened it to 'emby'.
It's my mum's fault as she must have encouraged this. I hate euphemisms in general. Especially those which promote shame of natural female bodily ... erm ... stuff.

shalaa · 09/09/2005 21:02

Fanny and Willy when I was growing up, but then me and my sisters heard some Americans talking about there fannypacks and we were in hysterics.

Personally am going to use fanny and willy although I call DS 'Mr Winkle' but I have to stress this is only why he is a baby

CountessDracula · 09/09/2005 21:04

Minky for mine

spidermama · 09/09/2005 21:04

I'm very relieved to read so many votes for 'fanny'. It's almost a consensus.

CountessDracula · 09/09/2005 21:04

when I say mine, I mean my dd not my minky iykwim

TinyGang · 09/09/2005 21:04

ahh @ Mr Winkle

What a 'fannypack' though?

shalaa · 09/09/2005 21:06

It's what we call a bumbag which sounds just as bad. Still laugh when I see American tv and they say they fell on their fanny

zippitippitoes · 09/09/2005 21:07

My dds were brought with front bottoms but dd2 converted happily to minge (she has inherited my Grandma's hilarity at all things rude)

spidermama · 09/09/2005 21:07

Me too shalaa. But I'm quite partial to the idea of being at odds with what the americans are doing. It's embarrassing how much we seem to want to emulate them in so many other ways.

TinyGang · 09/09/2005 21:08

I'm with you now!

It's said we're divided by a common language with America. Apparantly they think it's hilarious that we say 'Lay the table'!

shalaa · 09/09/2005 21:10

Minge! ha ha ha ha Could just imagine my mums face if I said the word minge

(sorry had a glass of wine and now have the mentality of a 13 year old)

shalaa · 09/09/2005 21:11

Yeah and if you ask for a rubber in America they give you a condom
