Weddingy thread : What has made you cry, laugh out loud or never forget?

Im looking for lovely little touches at my wedding.

I really want the day to be very memorable even though it isnt a grand affair.

Thinking back to weddings you have been to, what moved you or really made you smile?

The best was just a cheapy deal where the bride and groom were both just really chilled out and relaxed, chatting with the guests.

The worst was the most expensive affair where everyone was stressed out!!!

It's always been the things that children have done, which just kind of happen!

Went a brilliant wedding a couple of years back. The reception was held in a marquee with a fantastic view of a bay in Gower. Guests awaited the wedding party in a field (champagne and peach juice) where bales of hay had been arranged to create mini rooms with sofas, chairs, tables, etc. A nice touch and original.

I wanted to cry at my own wedding because the organist was so bad! Can laugh about it now but cringe whenever I see the video which thankfully is not that often.

Oh, that reminds me, instead of a guest book, someone had a large picture mount which they got everyone to sign. They then used this as the mount around a wedding photo they had enlarged. Looked great and a lovely memento.

a non-wedding like 'first dance'

Yeah popsy, we WERE going to have dance lessons to do a silly dance but that has gone out of the window. Would like to think of something original there.

I love every wedding at which there's

a/ free booze
b/ short speeches

Don't care about anything else, venue/'proper' food/sugar almonds/general lavishness can go hang; weddings with A and B always live longest in the memory

if i had had a reception (rather than just going out into town on a p**s up and shouting at ll the DJs for not having any nolans or abba "its my wedding night and i want to daaaaaance!) i would have forced dh to dance to 'your just to good to be true...cant take my eyes off you'

Not sure we can stretch to A as were so blooody skint but everyone is getting bucks fizz on arrival, 2 glasses of wine with meal and champagne for speeches - will that do?

yes, that's fine...

i once went to a wedding my cousin's actually which was HUGE but no free booze, not a single glass -- and the top table got champagne for the speeches.

We were good, and did our first dance to a proper slow song, but then later on, my bridesmaid gave a quick speech about how we met, and how one of our first things we did the night we met, was to go to the DJ and request the same song... we then got to bounce like maniacs to Girl From Mars. I got to see the same happy bouncy face on Boy, and it is something I will never forget.

Pecka - I like your aisle music idea! My friend and her dh walked down the aisle out of the church to 'Greatest Day of my Life' by Beverly Knight!

We did a little 'routine' to the choruses of our first dance (which was 'Thinking about you' by The Sundays) - nothing flash but it made everyone laugh/smile cos it was a bit different rather than just shuffling about!

Make sure you have disposable cameras on each table if you can - we got hundreds of fabulous photos from the evening reception from these.

dh had been married before so he had the big white wedding, we wanteda small wedding where wejust afew family members so that we could afford to have our reception in a lovely resturaunt in ely that has a nationwide reputation. we had all our wedding photos in the gardens there and as they display local artists work in the function room our cuting the cake photo lookied really good with this contempary artwork on the wall behind us!!! the best bit was when dd1 cried when we were declared man and wife.

oh yes disposable camera - but pay that bit extra for ones with automatic flash....ours had to be clicke on and people forgot

Yes the first dance!

we had a Spanish band at our wedding and didn't even bother arranging anything, but then they started playing an up-tempo famenco-y song and made us dance. We did the worst hammy flamenco dancing ever, but everyone loved it (including the Spanish people, who weren't offeneded).

Later I realised that I couldn't have planned it better, but if I were to do it again, and if we didn't have a band, I'd pick a similar up-tempo song that lends itself to silly dancing (eg groove is in the heart, rocks by primal scream, or in our case I'd probably go for this corrosion or Panic).

NB have you got the booze sorted? sangria is cheaper than bucks fizz and just as nice!

already got them cod so NERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr matching in my colour scheme too aaaaaaah
