Im looking for lovely little touches at my wedding.

I really want the day to be very memorable even though it isnt a grand affair.

Thinking back to weddings you have been to, what moved you or really made you smile?

Things that made me laugh at our wedding were things that 'just happened' (ie you can't plan it).

Like the vicar (a good friend of ours) pronouncing my middle name like Maaree, instead of Marie (short)...............in Shona the word which is said like that mean money - so it was Gwen Money Dobson that DH was marrying LMAO.

The funniest thing I've experienced at someone elses wedding was a hymn chouce...........fight the good fight

My niece (the one who lives near you, becca, she is expecting her first baby any day now!!!!) had lovely favours - her DH is called Grant, so she got miniatures of Grant's whisky and had special labels printed with her name and Grant's on for the men, and tiny white-painted terracotta pots with even tinier white roses planted in them for the laydees (no roots though I don't think, they all died almost instantly!)

She also had the disposable cameras but I never heard if she got any decent pics from them.

btw I can vouch for SP's flamenco and its icebreaking capability

The ceremony was at Morpeth Reg Office, becca - couldn't tell you where the reception was (a country house hotel somewhere!)

AFAIK the grandmas will be doing the minding when she goes back to work but if I get a chance I'll mention you

peckarollover · 29/05/2005 21:34

There are loads of gorgeous country house hotels around here awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww I will look out for a heavily pregnant woman at the post office next to her house

Puff's right about children. At our wedding, my niece, who was about 3, joined in with the vows - so they went 'I (groom's name)'... 'I (bride's name)' me Amber Louise!' And then she invited everyone back to her house for tea (about 100 miles away). Adorable.
And dh crying when we said our vows... I'm not sure you can plan for the memorable stuff, it just happens.
We had all sorts of disasters leading up to our wedding: my dress wasn't finished until the day, one of my bridesmaid's dresses never was finished, my dad nearly didn't turn up (not on purpose, was just scarily late) culminating in dh writing off the car on the way there (luckily he was fine). But the day itself was absolutely wonderful - really was the happiest day (apart from ds's birth, which came later).
Hope you get a gorgeous day too.

She is quite tall, very pretty and very slim (at least she used to be!) (slim that is) and has shortish reddish hair (ditto!)

I actually haven't seen her pg - we visited my DB at New Year, when she was 3 months, saw her scan pic stuck on the fridge, but she wasn't there and we haven't been over since, hence vagueness of description. Hope we will get to see my great-nephew before he starts school!

treacletart · 29/05/2005 21:56

Smells always remind me of when I first experienced them - DH and I both wore new scents for the first time on our wedding day (me - Agent Provocateur him Acqua di Parma) and now whenever we wear them, it takes us right back to our wedding day and our honeymoon.

A german tradition (well I think it's a tradition - it could have just been my one German friends families tradition) is for all the men to be given a single rose before the first dance. Bride starts dancing with her Dad, then one by one the men cut in, present the rose, and get to dance until the next one comes. Groom goes last, by which time bride is dancing with a huge bunch of roses as well.

And as you are doing the lottery tickets, at a recent wedding we went to one guest on each table had a paper star inside their envelope as well which meant they were to take the flowers from the table home - and in this case the flowers were a huge glass vase with a stem of pussy willow and an extra long stemmed rose - I was gutted I didn't get the vase.

i wore a musical garter, i put it on the front of my thigh so it wouldn't get knocked by DH or my other leg. when it came to signing the register we were asked to sit down. DH then put his hand on my leg and the church was shocked by a rather loud rendition of 'Scotland the brave'

People thought it was a mobile phone and the vicar looked disgusted with us.

It's all on camera and very funny.

we went to a wedding where there was a full on creche / child minding in the next room - kids were running in and out of the reception very happy, and the parents got to relax - made a huge difference because the parents were not worrying about their children (there was a separate kids tea earlier too, so they were not waiting until 8 pm for food)

also, at our own wedding, we had a song just after the start of the ceremony (lead by a man playing guitar) - Bring Me Sunshine - every one knew it, everyone say along, everyone laughed, and the rest of the ceremony was lovely, relaxed and remains to both of us, the crowning point of our wedding day - get tears in my eyes just thinking about it

i think the best weddings i have been to have three attributes - 1. simple, 2. genuine, and 3. fun - the frills really don't matter, its the sentiment and emotion on the day

koalabear · 30/05/2005 09:59

ps. also helped that we restricted the people that could be invited by our parents to people we actually knew , so they weren't strangers there

lilibet · 30/05/2005 10:02

The thing that we did that stuck in everyone's mind and everyone commented on it an awful lot after was, we had no receiving line but then had a course on each table. The venue (who were totally fab and let us have everything we wnated) set two spare seats at every table so we could movie around. It gave us a proper chance to chat to everyone rather than just a quick hand shake and kiss.
