Michael Howard makes my BLOOD BOIL

Enid · 15/04/2005 17:11

It makes my blood boil to hear Michael Howard talking about Labour 'diluting British values' - eg giving some asylum seekers special treatment.

How dare he presume that British values aren't ones of tolerance, understanding and caring.

I hate the Tory party and I especially hate Michael Howard.

Thanks, I feel better now.

I come from Somerset, where I felt exactly the same way as you Enid. Now I live in east London. It churns me up inside to feel the way I do, but feel it I do.

Did anyone see the Let Them All In documentary on C4 - fascinating

nqc, agree.

howard and his pathetic cronies are just trying to get in on the back of peddling fear and scare stories (much like george bush in fact). the man and his tactics make me want to puke.

Flossam, I'm in east London, too. The thing is, lots of immigrants don't integrate. They don't in Canada, either. (Fact is, learning another language as an adult is hard.) But their kids are Canadian, no matter what their parents are like.

But Canada has (or had, anyway) a very relaxed attitude to immigrants, which helped their kids feel Canadian.

bubblerock · 15/04/2005 17:35

What would happen if there were no boundaries and we could choose where we wanted to live in the world regardless of where we were born?
Just a thought from planet bubblerock ...

Gobbledigook · 15/04/2005 17:36

There'd be complete anarchy!

JanH · 15/04/2005 17:40

Re integration, this was in Craig Murray's column yesterday (he's the ex-Ambassador to Uzbekistan standing against Jack Straw in Blackburn):

Defintely hate Blair more, but it's a close call. Howard says he will do horrible things, and if the sky fell and he got in would doubtless do them. Whereas Blair says he will be A Nice Chap, gets in and does foul things. For me just Vile comes out marginally ahead of Lying and Vile. But the passion with which I loath Blair cannot be good for my karma either, and probably warps my judgement on other people....

AnnieSG · 15/04/2005 17:55

God, it is so completely brilliant and heartening to know how many people hate all this racist awfulness!
Way to go, mumsnetters......... Hurrah! Gives me hope that Mr Something of the Night (hopefully Howard will never escape that name by his fellow party member!) hasn't a chance.
Although now I'm worried I'm tempting fate....

HVs in my area get notified when someone comes to this country from other parts. We're supposed to visit them and explain about registering with a doctor etc. Madness as most of them appear to be doctors themselves propping up our ailing health service. Definitely think immigration is a good thing.

NQC - thank you so much for those headlines - the bit about 'without planning permission' made me bark with laughter. Bliss. Can't wait to regale dh with them.
MH is a tosser, isn't he?

JoolsToo · 15/04/2005 18:13

Tony was on Jeremy Vine today - I tried to alert you but no takers ..... unfortunately, from my point of view which I realise may be biased, Jezza had him on the ropes.

Imho Michael is not the best choice they could have made for the Conservative Party leadership but I think I'm too old to be taken in by open necked shirts and the I'm just like you act.

One thing Tony did say today was that he respected other peoples points of view - I like that - sounds like an MN philosophy too.

ediemay · 15/04/2005 18:16

I feel actual physical revulsion every time I see Howard on TV. Am currently avoiding all news/current affairs for the sake of my blood pressure. I am proud to live in a country which has made space for asylum seekers and wish more people took the time to find out what the term actually means.

What exactly are Conservatives trying to conserve - apart from their own money, land and privileges? I agree Enid, I deplore Daily Mail-esque terms like 'British values' being uttered by despots-in-waiting such as this so-called politician. Sorry to rant, off to cook now - lots of banging and crashing in the kitchen.

morningpaper · 15/04/2005 18:24

I nearly started a similar post today when I saw the headlines about Howard. He seems to have a new racist slogan every day! Who the hell IS he attracting? It's terrifying to think that there are people who agree with him, who think "Yes, this man has it right." FFS our immigration figures are WAY down the list of European countries. How has THIS become a priority?

morningpaper · 15/04/2005 18:27

My right-wing father was recently arguing about how Michael Howard would return Britain back into a 'Christian country'.

(I take great pleasure in pointing out out that he is a non-practising Jewish man married to an ex porn star.)

Thank god for that, I thought I'd missed something - she always seemed so classy! (One of the Jean Shrimpton generation.)

I bet most of you have never even heard of Jean Shrimpton...
