Invitation to mumsnet book launch

Hi there

For anyone out there who doesn't yet know, the first mumsnet book, "Mums On Babies", is due to be released on March 30th. Thanks to all of you for all your contributions - we certainly couldn't have done it without you and we really hope you like the book .

The publishers, cassell-illustrated, are having a party to launch the book and hopefully drum up some press interest and we wondered if some of you who allowed your contributions to be used might like to come along. The party is being held at The Sanctuary in Covent Garden, London on Tuesday April 8th from 7-9pm and we have 75 invites to give away to the first 75 contributors who email [email protected] and say they want to come. It should be a good evening, with drinks and canapes and the odd hand or neck massage thrown in. There will be a group press photo taken during the evening ("the book we wrote" etc.) and your acceptance of the invitation means that you consent to appear in the photo.

Apologies if some of you have had this invite by email already. We had lots of "bad" email addresses when we tried to send an invite out to all the book contributors, so we thought it was fairer if we let folks know via Talk.

Hope to see lots of you there.

Congrats on being authors and thanks again,

Carrie, Justine & Rachel

I'm so sad !! Have just got it and have spent an hour scouring it - but no quotes from me in there !! Either nothing I say is of any value - OR - as I suspect - these discussions are over 18 months old ??? Lots of names in there that I don't recognise too.

Feeling most disappointed !!

bea · 29/03/2003 10:33

Aha! Scatterbrain! - i feel exactly the same way! sigh!... ;(

Bobbins · 29/03/2003 10:51

Hi Everyone,

A few people have expressed concern that they didn't get an invite to the book launch party. Any mumsnet member who'd like to come is very welcome to email us at [email protected] and we'll send you an invite by email, subject to numbers of course.

So, why didn't you get an invite?

There are a number of possible reasons.

We initially invited people whose talk nickname appear in the book. There were about 350 and about 65 of these emails bounced back in various ways because of bad email addresses and so on. If you are concerned you are not getting email from us when you should, then it's worth checking that you have set up your member profile page with the correct email address. We have quite a few that say @hotmail or @aol rather than @hotmail.com or @aol.com for example. When you click the link, log in with your talk nickname rather than your email adress -in case your email address is wrong.

Also, when you joined, or since then, you may have checked the box with the text says "We occasionally send email notices with news from mumsnet (including our fortnightly parenting news round-ups and individually-tailored developmental emails charting your childs progress). Please tick here if you do NOT wish to receive these notices." If you have checked this box then generally we won't send any email to you.

Finally, if we get email "bounce" messages from your address saying it's not valid, then we mark that address as "bad" and won't try to send to it in future.

If you have any further concerns about this or anything else, then drop us a note at [email protected] and we'll look into it. (In general, it's better to send mail to contactus rather than tech, as you are more likely to get a timely response as more people see mails to contactus.)

Scatterbrain, I've no idea if I'm in the book, I haven't got my copy yet, but we were given the option of changing our names (which I asked to do), which may explain why you don't recognise many names.

slug · 31/03/2003 13:35

I'm going, but in disguise as a fat woman with short red hair. In real life I'm actually a 6 foot svelte blonde with legs to die for

I got my e-mail a few days ago and said yes I'd love to go. I didn't realise that it ment I was in the book though!! Slightly worried now!! See you all there.

SoupDragon · 31/03/2003 15:57

No, it was direct from the Sanctuary via DH.

I was thinking more about the mother-in -law thread! I used to use another name back then, but changed it as DH new what it was and I think I said a bit too much.... Whoops!

Scatterbrain, we delivered the book to the publisher in June last year and started working on it about five months before that, so, yes, most of the postings were 18 months old or older. Sure you'll make the next one though (Mums on Pregnancy and Birth) - we deliver that to publisher in August for publication next Jan. Willum - there is an in-laws thread in the book but all postings are anon (it's in the relationships chapter and we thought it safer to remove nicknames!), so you are safe.
Willow2 I know you're not seriously miffed but it's a fair point that often the post that started the conversation got chopped in the book (most popular threads were culled by about 75% otherwise they'd have been way too long) and these lost posting contributed to the discussion hugely. That's why the invite to the launch party is extended to all mumsnet members - not just published contributors. We've still got places left, by the way - just email us at [email protected] if you'd like to come. Can't promise loads of celebs but should be very jolly.

Mo2 · 31/03/2003 16:38

Hey - what do you mean, Justine... we're ALL celebs now !!!

willum · 31/03/2003 16:46

Can breath easy now, I hope! I've ordered my copy, so I'll soon see!!

willum · 31/03/2003 16:49

sb34 are you going by train? My train normally stops at East Croydon.

Demented · 31/03/2003 17:37

I received my book this morning and wanted to say to all at Mumsnet what a great job you have done. I wish this book had been available when I had DS1! So much nicer to read real mums experiences than the text book stuff I read when pg with DS1, looking forward to the next book.

Chinchilla · 31/03/2003 18:38

I'm looking forward to one on toddlers!
