Hi, would it be highly inappropriate to set up a go fund me to get the funds for a house deposit? Im currently private renting but the house is full of damp from top to bottom, its starting to affect our health, im asthmatic and my partner is diabetic, my chest is so bad at home and my partners sugar levels are always high no matter what he does to bring them down. The landlord has been made aware of the damp and has just said oh well see it will cost alot of money!! I've paid my rent and if ive ever gotten behind ive always paid up yet nothing in nearly 8 years has been done in this house, the place Is falling apart but hes not interested. I was thinking of going down the environmental health route only problem is that its all been verbal I don't have anything in writing. Hes now pushing for a property inspection but I feel like he's only doing it so he can turn it round on us and evict us!! Im at my wits end council are no help and only want to give us a 1 bed flat but ive got pets so its not ideal and even then I could be bidding for years!!! I just don't know what to do!! We both work full time and still don't have enough money to get a deposit together! Sometimes we have to choose between eating or staying warm!! So fed up!!!!

This is in the same CF category as Go Fund Me's that are set up because Sid got pissed on holiday and fell off his hotel balcony, but didn't have travel insurance and now can't repatriate himself back to the UK.

Ie. No.

TheQuickCat · 26/01/2026 17:35

Because you are a couple, your council have deemed you as a one bedroom need. Quite rightly. You only need one bedroom. Anymore is a desire, not a need. Pets don't count.

Nomedshere · 26/01/2026 17:36

Cheeky as fuck

Shedeboodinia · 26/01/2026 17:37

Well I don't see why you can't. Whether anyone would pay into it is another question. Do you know how you would run your campaign and attract contributers?

Toottooot · 26/01/2026 17:40

I’ll chuck in 1p. What are you going to do when you canna afford to pay your bills? Start another fund? 🙄

Allbymyself123 · 26/01/2026 17:41

😂

pinksheetss · 26/01/2026 17:41

Would I donate? No

It doesn’t mean other people wouldn’t donate though. There are many out there with a surplus of extra money who may be okay doing it

Just because other posters here think it’s weird it doesn’t really make it. You’re not doing harm by posting it and you are not forcing anyone to donate.

Will you get as much as some charity pages? Probably not.
Doesn't mean you can’t do it

JolenesBestPal · 26/01/2026 17:42

Oh no!!! Thats a terrible idea OP!

WinterSonnet · 26/01/2026 17:42

Nothing to stop you, but I highly doubt you will get very far with absolute strangers.

Family and friends my throw a few quid your way, though I imagine if they were in a situation to significantly help, they would have done already.

Sounds like you would be better off looking for a new rental.

PeachyKoala · 26/01/2026 17:44

If someone I knew did this I'd think a lot less of them.

BeefAndHorseradishSandwich · 26/01/2026 17:44

Highly inappropriate. We worked two jobs each for 3.5 years to get our house deposit. There’s no way I would donate.

Parcell · 26/01/2026 17:44

Take the one bed council flat and save the difference. You are lucky to be offered it. No chance where I live.

Remove the pets and take the Council property.

ZenNudist · 26/01/2026 17:48

Go for it. Let us know how you get on.

I've seen go fund me for holidays.

butterpuffed · 26/01/2026 17:48

Pets are expensive ~ why have pets if you have to choose between eating and keeping warm?

Why not move to another private rental until you can afford to buy somewhere, using the deposit you've given for the current rental?

MissCooCooMcgoo · 26/01/2026 17:48

Why the fuck not. I'd bung you a fiver. You get out of this life what you put in.

littleyellowflowerspotted · 26/01/2026 17:49

Gosh, take the council flat! You can always apply for a transfer to a bigger place later on. Admittedly you might never get it but you will still have a secure tenancy for life and your health will improve.

You can also set up a Go fund me but I really don’t think anyone will give to it. The only way that might work is if there was an extremely compelling case, such as a new home for a disabled child (as an example). I doubt it would work for you and your partner.

You can try!

As long as you're honest what it's for, it's up to people if they donate or not. Maybe it will catch people's imagination, maybe they'll think you're a cheeky fucker.

But as long there is no fraud I think you can start one for whatever you want!

Agreed. As long as you're prepared for the full range of responses, try your luck.

I don't think she's been offered a flat. It sounds like the council have said they would only qualify for a one bed flat but they'll have to go on the waiting list with fifty zillion other people.

LifeOfAShowgirl13 · 26/01/2026 17:51

My step kids’ mum once set up a Go Fund Me for a boob job. I believe she raised a grand total of £0 😆

Irren · 26/01/2026 17:51

Blankscreen · 26/01/2026 16:03

Sorry but yes it would be very inappropriate.. Sadly lots of people in your predicament not why sure you think people would be willing to bale you out.

Bail.

YourWinter · 26/01/2026 17:52

Totally inappropriate to ask complete strangers to fund any aspect of your spending.

Askingforafriendtoday · 26/01/2026 17:52

Totally inapprpriate

Supertayto · 26/01/2026 17:53

This is astonishing. No. Save for a dehumidifier; start looking for another rented property; stop thinking of your pets as a barrier to suitable housing; look or train for a higher paying job; get a second job; do literally anything other than expect others to pay out so that you can afford a house which is large enough for your bloody pets. Your housing is impacting your health. Move.
