Hi, would it be highly inappropriate to set up a go fund me to get the funds for a house deposit? Im currently private renting but the house is full of damp from top to bottom, its starting to affect our health, im asthmatic and my partner is diabetic, my chest is so bad at home and my partners sugar levels are always high no matter what he does to bring them down. The landlord has been made aware of the damp and has just said oh well see it will cost alot of money!! I've paid my rent and if ive ever gotten behind ive always paid up yet nothing in nearly 8 years has been done in this house, the place Is falling apart but hes not interested. I was thinking of going down the environmental health route only problem is that its all been verbal I don't have anything in writing. Hes now pushing for a property inspection but I feel like he's only doing it so he can turn it round on us and evict us!! Im at my wits end council are no help and only want to give us a 1 bed flat but ive got pets so its not ideal and even then I could be bidding for years!!! I just don't know what to do!! We both work full time and still don't have enough money to get a deposit together! Sometimes we have to choose between eating or staying warm!! So fed up!!!!

Where has that come from? The OP hasn't even said what her pets are!

Whatever they are they are living in substandard conditions. And obviously she can’t afford them.

So is the OP living in substandard conditions - that's why she wants to move herself and her pets out of them.

Apparently.

The couple can't afford to eat and heat the house. Pets are a luxury at that point, and they are preventing OP from joining a council list.

Aside from your family , who may donate , who do you think is going to give you money ? If the council have offered you a 1 bed flat then take it

FourSevenTwo · 26/01/2026 18:38

What's wrong about a one bedroom flat for presumably just two adults?

That said, if you believe someone would want to donate you, it's your right to try it.

MyrtleLion · 26/01/2026 18:43

The new Renters Rights Act has a Decent Homes Standard. All private rented property must come up to scratch. Wait for it to come into law and then invoke it.

Mapletree1985 · 26/01/2026 18:48

Take the council flat and get rid of all but one of the pets. If you have to choose between heating and food you cannot afford to take care of them properly.

AdaDex · 26/01/2026 18:50

Just do it. See what happens.
Good luck ❤

You need to rehome your poor pets.

I think so too, but it would probably be difficult. Many people can no longer afford to care for their pets and there are a lot of animals looking for new homes.

LowdermilkPark · 26/01/2026 18:52

Are you serious? Very inappropriate indeed.

Ariel896 · 26/01/2026 18:57

Wouldn’t you be really embarrassed 😬

Possibly, but if it meant she'd have a house deposit...

MargaretThursday · 26/01/2026 19:08

I've seen a few people try this.

I find it quite amusing, but mostly because they don't normally see much response. In fact the last two I saw didn't even hit double digits, and none have got to the level you could get a decent garden shed with the money raised.

Zanatdy · 26/01/2026 19:08

You can set one up, but who will contribute? It’s frustrating working and not being able to buy, but plenty of people in the same boat.

"Quid pro quo clarice" - I've been feeling right down lately, and I know a handbag would cheer me up, no end, so I will if you will?

MungoforPresident · 26/01/2026 19:09

Besides being highly inappropriate, a GoFundMe would not actually work because they are only effective when someone has lots of contacts and followers who can get the ball rolling. The campaign has to be very popular somehow, to attract strangers' eyes to it.

So, they work when someone has been in the public eye for some reason, usually through a press article or a big social media post. Similar to a Kickstarter, you need lots of interested eyes on it.

There are thousands of campaigns on there that never get more than one donation, always from friends or family. It would rely on you knowing enough supporters to get it off the ground.

plsdontlookatme · 26/01/2026 19:10

Hi OP, do you have some good dehumidifiers? The 10L or so ones on wheels that you plug into a wall do a lot. If you're struggling to such a degree - which i can understand as I am in a similar position, and have lived in several mouldy or otherwise uninhabitable rentals - then a 1 bed council flat will be a godsend.

loppity · 26/01/2026 19:11

Just wanted to echo what @MyrtleLion said re the Renters Rights Act

BernardButlersBra · 26/01/2026 19:11

Can’t you just work more, spend less and save more. That’s what l did and lm sure that’s what lots of other people did 🙄. Combined with moving to a cheaper area and buying a house that needed work which a lot of we did ourselves

Nearly50omg · 26/01/2026 19:12

Contact the council housing dept re the landlord and not maintaining the house to a safe condition and also get your partner down to the doctors to get them on mounjaro as it stabilises diabetes very quickly and is amazing

then your partner can get a better job when they are feeling better and you can move out to a better house

Moonlightfrog · 26/01/2026 19:13

Not appropriate at all. Of course anyone can set up a go fund me but I doubt people will donate when most people are in a similar situation and also unable to afford their own home.

I do actually know of someone that has kind of done this and they haven’t managed to get much money…….and I am sure people are actually laughing at them. Why should anyone pay for your house deposit?

IDrinkTeaAllTheTime · 26/01/2026 19:15

Is this for a deposit to buy a place? If so, even if you got people to donate, I’m not sure how that would go down with lenders. They’re really quite strict on the source of the deposit and if it’s gifted, it can generally only be from direct family, like parents.

Of course, you could get lucky and find a broker who can find you a lender who will accept the source of funds, but it would be really unlikely.

As mentioned by someone else, you can get a 100% renters mortgage through Skipton, or YBS offer a 5% deposit option. Obviously for both of these, you still have to pass affordability.

In your position, I’d take the council offer and try to save as much as you can for a few years to buy a place, or you could also apply for a bigger place once you’ve been there a while.

I do feel for you, as housing in this country is a joke, but I don’t think this is the solution.

user1473878824 · 26/01/2026 19:17

I’d also like to buy a home @Glinda25 so how much will you be contributing to mine?

WonderingWanda · 26/01/2026 19:21

What's the cause of the dam is it caused by leaking gutters or a lack of damp course which is what the landlord needs to fix or is it down to not heating and ventilating? I ow my own home and its a constant...and very expensive battle to keep it ventilated enough and heated enough to prevent condensation related damp. We've also had to fork out huge amounts of money to repair damp courses, gutters, roof tiles brickwork, render, damaged drains all in the quest to keep damp at bay. Are you sure you are ready for that? If you can't even afford to save for the deposit how will you save for repairs and bills so that you keep your home in a good condition and maintain it's value?
