Hi, would it be highly inappropriate to set up a go fund me to get the funds for a house deposit? Im currently private renting but the house is full of damp from top to bottom, its starting to affect our health, im asthmatic and my partner is diabetic, my chest is so bad at home and my partners sugar levels are always high no matter what he does to bring them down. The landlord has been made aware of the damp and has just said oh well see it will cost alot of money!! I've paid my rent and if ive ever gotten behind ive always paid up yet nothing in nearly 8 years has been done in this house, the place Is falling apart but hes not interested. I was thinking of going down the environmental health route only problem is that its all been verbal I don't have anything in writing. Hes now pushing for a property inspection but I feel like he's only doing it so he can turn it round on us and evict us!! Im at my wits end council are no help and only want to give us a 1 bed flat but ive got pets so its not ideal and even then I could be bidding for years!!! I just don't know what to do!! We both work full time and still don't have enough money to get a deposit together! Sometimes we have to choose between eating or staying warm!! So fed up!!!!

I am going against the grain here. Nothing wrong at all with setting up a GoFundMe @Glinda25 to try to raise a house deposit. I don't know why some people are being so harsh. No-one has to give to it if they don't want to.

People start GoFundMes for all sorts of reasons. To fund boob jobs, holidays, weddings, honeymoons, house repairs, personal tuition, personal projects (like publishing a book,) their dream holiday, all sorts... Some reasons are a bit cheeky, but as I said, no-one has to give.

Go for it. I would. There is nothing 'inappropriate' about it. Don't be too blue though if not many people give to it.

Well it sounds like you need to move and whilst easier said than done it is easier than selling a house and buying a property. Have you cut your budget as much as possible to save to move to a different rented property. You could try environmental health on the grounds it is damp but not sure why your house is affecting your partners sugar levels?

I don’t think you will get any donations towards a house deposit. I wouldn’t contribute. People don’t know what you spend your money on but it is entirely possible you don’t manage your money well and spend on unnecessary items like cigarettes, takeaways, alcohol or gambling. If you don’t do that stuff and are still struggling in spite of you both working full time you are justified in being fed up especially if you are having to choose between eating or heating although a damp house will be difficult to heat. Having pets is a bit of a problem too although some landlords will allow them depending on what you have. Do you have debt?

Appaloosa2000 · 26/01/2026 16:47

I think the comments are quite harsh. You could try . Nothing to lose. Work out a bare bones budget and stick to it. Then at least you are trying to do something yourself too.

ThisHazelPombear · 26/01/2026 16:50

I would take that council flat for your health alone.

dontletmedownbruce · 26/01/2026 16:50

No harm in trying. It’s unlikely people who know you would donate, though. Many people are trying to save for the same, or fund kids through university.

Skyspectacular · 26/01/2026 16:53

Yeah, go for it and put the link here. You might be surprised how much you get

Gooseyloopey · 26/01/2026 16:54

No harm in trying

zipadeeday · 26/01/2026 16:56

Do it, you'll never know till you try.

Thedefault · 26/01/2026 16:57

I don't think it would be good for you socially if you share with those you know. An old school acquaintance did this years ago in my area and she still gets comments if she treats herself to anything as people feel she should be 'giving back'. Could you try shared ownership?

Cookingupmyfirstbornson · 26/01/2026 16:59

Why do pets equal an extra bedroom?!?

JustGiveMeReason · 26/01/2026 17:00

Separate issues here.

  1. Yes - it would be wrong to set up a GoFundMe, but it seems to me that most of them are. I certainly wouldn't donate to anything like that.
  2. What is wrong with a 1 bed flat for a couple ? - I've inferred it is only you and your partner, as you haven't mentioned dc. Why would you turn down the offer of housing, in your position ?
  3. If you have damp and mould, then Environmental health would be able to tell that from an inspection - it doesn't really matter what conversations you have or haven't had with your landlord.
  4. Get in touch with Shelter who will offer support and advice about the fact your Landlord is letting you a property that is damp.

If everyone who reads this thread gave you a couple of quid that would add up 💰

BadgernTheGarden · 26/01/2026 17:02

Have you tried housing disrepair lawyers to tackle your landlord? I have seen people donate money to really dodgy go fund me's but I doubt you would raise much.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 26/01/2026 17:03

@Glinda25
That is the height of CF**kery and you wouldn’t get a penny out of me.

SpiritVaults · 26/01/2026 17:04

Last year I paid my mortgage off 12 years early and every last brick of my house has been paid for by me and me alone- no parental help, no partner- just me working my arse off in jobs barely above minimum wage whilst living with an appalling anxiety disorder for a significant amount of time. The satisfaction is immense.
The whole concept of " go fund me" is anathema to me.

shellyleppard · 26/01/2026 17:05

Sore but I think you are being extremely cheeky asking for money for a house deposit. Please contact the environmental health team about the damp and dis repair. They can push landlord to get the work done. He might try and evict you but it's a chance you have to take. The same thing happened to me

MajorProcrastination · 26/01/2026 17:06

Is the angle to just raise some money for a deposit (a rental deposit? or are you looking to buy?) or to use this as a bit of an outrageous stunt to expose your landlord by name and shame them into either fixing what's wrong with the property or something else?

I know it's very hard to move while renting when there are pets in the mix but what was your long term plan with the pets situation?

Can you move? I'm guessing you're in a private rental from what you've said.

If you're able to move, start exposing the landlord's disregard for your health and the state that the house is in if it's, as you say, top to bottom.

In the meantime, get a decent dehumidifier or two, make sure you're airing the house, wiping moisture from windows to limit the damp, move furniture away from walls so air can circulate, open windows in bathrooms.

Do you work from home? If so, maybe it's worth using a warm space or a local library during the day so you're not in your damp home the whole time.

I'm not sure how the damp affects the diabetes. I know keeping a home warm is important for blood flow for diabetics. But I'm not a doctor, nor do I have diabetes.

DaisyChain505 · 26/01/2026 17:08

You can set up a go fund me for whatever you want, that doesn’t mean people will donate or that it’s morally right.

You need to contact the letting agents you go the property through or go down the legal route. Landlords have a legal obligation to sort these issues and it’s extremely easy to google exactly what your rights are and how you go about addressing them.

Emori · 26/01/2026 17:09

No harm in asking is there. You can ask for anything you want.

Tigerbalmshark · 26/01/2026 17:09

I’ve always fancied a month in Costa Rica seeing the wildlife, but have never been able to afford it. OP if you chip into my GFM I’ll chip into yours. Mine will be cheaper than a house deposit.

C152 · 26/01/2026 17:09

There's nothing inappropriate about asking for help. Unfortunately, I doubt you'll get any, but read the Terms of Service and give it a go. I think if you're completely honest about what the money is for, you'll be able to set up a GoFundMe account, but I'm not sure about the term that says it's prohibited to receive cash or credit for yourself. I think it's to do with money laundering, but probably best to check, as the site can close your account if they believe you've breached their terms.

ArticWillow · 26/01/2026 17:10

You can try. I don't think it's cheeky as long as you are honest. But I would actually laugh at the suckers that give money to you for a house deposit.

A better option would be to start looking for a new place to rent. I know that's just as difficult as getting a deposit.

BananagramBadger · 26/01/2026 17:11

If you cant afford heating and food then you can’t afford pets and a mortgage.

The posters above gave some helpful advice about the damp. A GoFundMe for a decent dehumidifier might be a bit more realistic - and probably more successful.

Bologneselove · 26/01/2026 17:11

TheInkIsBlackThePageIsWhite · 26/01/2026 16:15

I've seen them set up for far worse things tbh.

Who do you think will contribute to your house deposit though? Random strangers. Your mates?

You say the council are no help but they are willing to put you on the list, which means you're in a better position than lots of people, the longer you stall that, the longer you'll be waiting.

The council haven’t just put her on a list, they offered a flat which they don’t want because of their pets.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 26/01/2026 17:13

yes its unreasonable - why don’t you think you can get a mortgage? You don’t even need a deposit these days. Have you looked at the skipton building society track record mortgage.

Others only needing 5% YBS for example. If you can’t save 5%, honestly you have no business owning a house as you have no financial resilience.
