Hi, would it be highly inappropriate to set up a go fund me to get the funds for a house deposit? Im currently private renting but the house is full of damp from top to bottom, its starting to affect our health, im asthmatic and my partner is diabetic, my chest is so bad at home and my partners sugar levels are always high no matter what he does to bring them down. The landlord has been made aware of the damp and has just said oh well see it will cost alot of money!! I've paid my rent and if ive ever gotten behind ive always paid up yet nothing in nearly 8 years has been done in this house, the place Is falling apart but hes not interested. I was thinking of going down the environmental health route only problem is that its all been verbal I don't have anything in writing. Hes now pushing for a property inspection but I feel like he's only doing it so he can turn it round on us and evict us!! Im at my wits end council are no help and only want to give us a 1 bed flat but ive got pets so its not ideal and even then I could be bidding for years!!! I just don't know what to do!! We both work full time and still don't have enough money to get a deposit together! Sometimes we have to choose between eating or staying warm!! So fed up!!!!

Why do you have pets when you have been in unsuitable housing for years? Pets are expensive and surely the priority should have been saving that money for a better housing situation before pets. More than one pet as well... You should accept the council flat.

The council haven’t just put her on a list, they offered a flat which they don’t want because of their pets.

and only want to give us a 1 bed flat but ive got pets so its not ideal and even then I could be bidding for years!!!

I read this as op has been put in the list for a 1 bed but still needs to bid to get one. I could be totally wrong - op can you clarify.

GoldbergVariations · 26/01/2026 17:14

How much a month do your pets cost OP?

Judging by the fact that they expect their own bedroom, I'm guessing they have expensive tastes.

🙄

You've forgotten to tell us who you think would be willing to give to the Go Fund Me?

And I suppose more importantly, why you think they would?

Marble10 · 26/01/2026 17:17

I’d like to see a mortgage offer based on a go fund me deposit.

Mcdhotchoc · 26/01/2026 17:17

There is nothing stopping you.
Would i contribute? No.
If I had any spare money, it would go to kids with mobility nedds not met by the wheelchair service or the rnli or the food bank

Honeypizza · 26/01/2026 17:18

I wouldn't say it's the right way to go about it, but I am surprised at what I've just seen on there while having a browse -

A lady has raised £700 to buy a car simply because her test is coming up.
A bloke has raised nearly £8k to buy a house in Italy (no other reason given).
Someone else has raised nearly £5k for a house in Italy (which seems a bit odd).

God knows who is actually donating.

LoftyMintTraybake · 26/01/2026 17:20

You’d end up with one hell of a job proving source of funds to comply with Anti-Money Laundering regulations. I can’t think of a conveyancer who would touch it with a bargepole!

BlackCat14 · 26/01/2026 17:21

Who are you expecting to give you the money, and how much are you actually expecting to get from this?

badboss2020 · 26/01/2026 17:23

Just no. Pets are expensive. Save the money instead. I can’t afford pets.

PinterandPirandello · 26/01/2026 17:23

If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Charlize43 · 26/01/2026 17:24

I'd hope you'd give the donated monies to charity that needs it... like The Cats Protection.

Kitties need nice things as well.

CoastalCalm · 26/01/2026 17:24

You only need a one bedroom flat - there are many couples who would love to be offered ‘only’ a one bed council flat

BePoisedPlumUser · 26/01/2026 17:28

Go for it. You should even get Jason Manford and his charity ninjas page involved.

I agree. The idea you need a bigger council property because you have pets is so cheeky.

Happyjoe · 26/01/2026 17:28

Lol, if you think it will work, try it!

365RubyRed · 26/01/2026 17:28

You are being hopelessly optimistic if you think people will contribute to a GFM for a house deposit. You would be better off buying a tambourine and busking outside the train station, people might feel sorry for you then.

Gahr · 26/01/2026 17:29

While it would be inappropriate for you to do this, I wouldn't despair. Retaliatory evictions are illegal, so start a paper trail. You need to have this inspection, don't cut your nose off to spite your face. Instead of directing your energy to something that won't work (setting up a GoFundMe) direct it towards making sure your landlord obeys the law. Recent changes have made the law far more pro tenant.

Pmddproblems · 26/01/2026 17:29

To be honest I would donate if a friend or family member did this in these circumstances. I don’t have much but I’d give what I could.

The point is that others wouldn't, so unless OP's family are loaded (in which case, she should just ask them directly) she isn't going to get anything out of it, and she'll make herself look an entitled fool into the bargain.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 26/01/2026 17:32

Not a fucking chance. Go fund yourself.

Rainbow1901 · 26/01/2026 17:33

MIght be worth your while getting the local council or environmental people in to do an assessment. Has your landlord not done any annual inspections? Has he maintained Gas certificates, Smoke Alarms etc? If not you have grounds to sue him if he has not maintained your property.

As for the GoFundMe - it's a free country - you can try - but don't be surprised if you get varied responses.
Plus a dehumidifier might help with some of the moisture overload in your home

dailyconniptions · 26/01/2026 17:33

Youd be better doing it for a good electric dehumidifier. It's critical to buy yourselves one to run in the house to draw out some of the moisture. Most houses need dehumidifying, rented or owned.

Tablesandchairs23 · 26/01/2026 17:35

You can try doubt people will give. Alot of people are in your position.
