Ciao , Hello , Welcome .

OP posts:

I have to admit, many years ago and I really didn't have money for clothes, me and a friend went to a place run by nuns where they gave out clothes. I got a realy nice velvet jacket that I wore for years and a vintage astrakan coat!

That was before the days of a caritas bin on every corner. Now I think they just sell stuff on to 2nd hand clothes dealers. There are a couple of 2nd hand clothes stalls on our local market, but mosty it's just me and the Romanians rooting through the stuff. I got a nice leather bag for 5 euros not so long ago.

Can you list on uk ebay without a uk adress? Doesn't it automatically go on italian ebay?

Brangelina · 14/07/2008 11:12

I think you can choose the country where you list, although I'm not sure, DP is the ebay expert. I think it would automatically come up in the listing "from Italy", just like you get "from China" etc. I was going to open a UK account anyway, just so the from Italy bit doesn't appear. Apparently they don't check up, lots of people have the same name and I'd be listing my mum's address and obv not my codice fiscale (is it NI n° you have to give in the UK?).

I've bought second hand stuff here, usually from mercatini dell'usato or else from dodgy market stalls. I once bought 3 outrageous velvet dress for 5000 lire each. Sadly, I can no longer fit into them.

I'd love there to be charity shops and the like here, it would make my life so much easier. I think it is quite telling that there aren't any, they probably realise they wouldn't make any money because of the snobbiness. Some "vintage" shops ahve sprung up in Milan, but it's the same old toot at stupidly high prices to make the milanese think they're getting a "real antique".

at you lot being so near to a beach.

Sputnik · 14/07/2008 12:38

I've found a lot of Italians traditionally sceptical about the concept of charities too (ie don't trust them not to line their own pockets), although I think it's slowly changing.

MarsLady · 14/07/2008 12:44

Grazi bella

Oh I give up! I need lessons in Italian. I love the language so much it's time to learn!

MarsLady · 14/07/2008 12:47

Mille grazie, donna bellisima

Brangelina · 14/07/2008 13:07

Oh you got it! I'm so glad as the Italian postal system can be "capricious" for want of a better word.

I don't know why it should be the worst selling issue, the Italians are quite taken with black models (Naomi for instance is quite a cult figure here) and I would have thought that people who bought Vogue would buy it anyway. I mean, you don't exactly buy it for literary content, do you?

Anyway, I'm soooo pleased it got there and in record time too. My faith has been restored

Rosa · 14/07/2008 17:05

I gave up on the church stuff as the Suore said that they had enough . So I caritas bin our stuff and I will be E bay uk babies stuff when finished. I have an E bay Uk log in as well and nobody asked for any numbers at all. I set it up when I wanted some stuff to be sent to a Uk address and I was blocked from bidding . I have a very strange log in as I had to do it in 5 mins before the item ran out !
Went to huge agricultural fair today it was great really close to loads of animals beautiful cows / sheep dd stroked them. Had to go away from the goats nearly threw up at the poo smell ( mum said it wasn't strong !).
Anyway cold is there but she is in forma just blocked up at night .
GIo GOOD LUCK with the house hunting I feel for you as we are in same situation we have a 4+4 but its falling apart at the seams.

Do any of you know where Romanzo Criminale was set, the beaches/coast seems rather beatiful and i always assumed the coast of Lazio was crap, not sure why i assumed that...it is summer here again, warm enough for me pregnant lady. I agree with Bran, Naomi is huge in Italy..

gio71 · 14/07/2008 18:42

Hi Hot
Am assured by dp who is obsessed by that film/book etc that set in Ostia, further down from the main bit.

hotHELL · 14/07/2008 19:12

Really? I always assumed Ostia would be pretty ugly, don't know why, i guess it is horrible in August when it gets busy, just like anywhere else.

Brangelina · 14/07/2008 19:34

I always thought Ostia was ugly too, probably because every time it's on the news they always show tamari (sp?) in naff parts of the beach or town.

If you want ugly, there's always the riviera romagnola....

Is it hot in Rome these days? Need to know what classy outfit to bring.

gio71 · 14/07/2008 20:18

main bit of Ostia is ugly altho we often end up there cos is easy with trenino. If you drive further south though its not bad, got sand dunes, not all stabilimenti blocking view of sea like main part of Ostia! Thats where I think they shot the film.
Hot in Rome Brange but much better than it was-32-34 instead of pushing 40! When are you down? What's happening in Como with bloody floods etc?? Memories of washout holidays in UK as a kid still raw, if same happens in Como will be gutted!!!!!

MarsLady · 14/07/2008 20:24

That's probably why I've always loved Italy The men are so appreciative [lascivious ]

Brangelina · 14/07/2008 20:41

We've had a lot of storms lately, but it is supposed to pass. It's not raining constantly, that's the important bit, and most areas of the lake are not underwater. Which weeks have you booked?

I'm coming down tomorrow, afternoon, have meeting outside Rome the next morning and get the train back tomorrow afternoon, in time for DD's birthday teh next day. So a flying visit, which is a shame as it's been ages since I last went to Rome and would have loved to spend more time wandering around. You are so lucky living there, Milan doesn't even come close in the beauty and charm stakes.

Mars, if you look on the little Italy 3 or 4 thread there are lots of descriptions of how lascivious some Italian men can be. I'll try and link you to the bit (if it's possible to link to only a part of a thread, that is).

Brangelina · 14/07/2008 20:42

Oh, the lascivious was you. Well, you'd be in great company

MarsLady · 14/07/2008 22:22

No really... link the lasciviousness (is that really a word?) Italian men! {phwoar!!!!!!!!!!!!!}

Sputnik · 14/07/2008 23:00

As a relative newbie to MN Little Italy, has the thing Italain men have for foreign women been done? Was this covered in the aforementioned lasciviousness debate?

Brangelina · 15/07/2008 09:14

Yes, that was it. Sorry, got waylaid last night, let me look for it now.

Brangelina · 15/07/2008 09:30

Here it is, it starts on page 39 with a grumble about Italian women and goes on from there

Sputnik · 15/07/2008 16:02

So does anyone know if Ernest moved to Milan in the end? It's like a soap opera!
And I now know Brangelina was a cubista. Wow. What other jiucy info have I missed out on?

Re Italian men, I have never been single here, but that hasn't stopped people from trying! When I first came here I used to get men whispering into my ear on the street. I had no idea what they were saying

Actually, as I speak english with DH my Italian vocabulary is woefully inadequate in certain departments, one time I got a phone call with a guy saying
"Sto faccendo la sega"
Me: "Scusa?"
"Sto faccendo la sega"
Me: Come? (as far as I knew fare la sega mean't skipping work, why was he telling me this?)
"Sto faccendo la sega"
Me: "Non ho capito"
"Me sto masturbando" (I think he was getting a bit cross at this point)
Me: stunned silence. Then I put the phone down

hotHELL · 15/07/2008 21:03

lol!!!!!!!

By the way the Ernest' s saga ended up with her moving to Germany I think, we were all on tenterhooks.

Pippi are you around, do you fancy a meet up with the kids in coram fields?

gio71 · 16/07/2008 14:06

My lovely childminder is giving me cooking lessons once a week at the moment-she is soooo good. Keep going into kitchen to nick sample lemon meatballs, if I keep going there will be no secondi for anyone....

Rosa · 16/07/2008 14:37

Lemon meatballs sounds interesting.
Took dd to the beach this am ( HURRAH) forecast is bad rest of week but at least we got a fair bit of snot out !! Nonna would ave been horrified as there was a little stream freezing so of course she played in it all morning ( with her cold of course!)
Italian men thing I am sure I posted I got calzini and catso mixed up said to a group of men I dont like white catsi !!!!
