Has anyone else got kids that dont at all resemble you physically?

My 2 daughters (4yrs and 2yrs) dont seem to look like me in any way physically. Whenever I see other people's kids they at least bear some similar traits, but I feel that I couldn't spot mine as being 'mine' in a line-up. It's a good job I am am not the father as I would be worried that I wasn't the biological father!
They definitely resemble dh though so I know they are ours!
But still, I get fed up with the comments from dh's inlaws that they look like dh's family and that they have inherited all their good qualities from his side of the family. It makes me feel like I am just the 'vessel' to pass on his genes instead of mine.
Can anyone else relate to this?

My dd is only 9 months, but everyone says she is the spit of her dad. I don't know why but i just expected her to be a mini-me . there was a thread a while back on MIL associating all the good traits with their side of the family.

eandh · 07/04/2008 07:19

I can't see any of my looks in our dd's as a baby dd1 was a spit of dh, she did go through a spell of looking like me but def back on dh's side now as she is tall and slim for her age so she is obviously going to have DH build (lucky her )

DD2 apparently looks like DH as a toddler according to his mates mums/his nan, although bless her she is short and little chubby so may take after my build (poor thing)

DD1 and 2 def have my personality though both are very quick tempered and stubborn and dd1 is very organised and neat (I am a neat freak ) and dd2 is a real little comic at times (which is DH)

TYhere are pics on my profile of both of the dd's plus me and dh if you wanted to compare

It may be that they do resemble you and you can't spot it. Different people see different aspects of resemblence in the same children.
I can't spot my similarity to my two at all; but the other day I went to a very crowded parents' evening to talk to DS2's music teacher. Had just come through the door and was wondering which of the 15 or so teachers was his, when a guy 30 feet away, who could only just spot me through the crowd beckoned me over and said 'You must be Master Threadworm's mum.' I was amazed.

Well my cousin has a little girl, who doesn't look like her. My cousin is half Belgian half Spanish, and is very fair with blond hair and blue eyes, yet her daughter is very Spanish looking, very dark hair and eyes and dusky complexion. I've never met my cousin's ex-p but apparently he was very fair as well (I think he was Belgian). My cousin's daughter looks much more like our other cousins who have two Spanish parents.
I also have a friend who looks absolutely nothing like her sister, in fact her next door neighbour thought I was her sister. It's only when you see the two of them with their brother you see any family resemblance.
Genetics can be very strange. If it helps, my Dh complains that both his sons bear a very strong resemblance to their mothers. However I can see him in both the boys. So although you might not see a resemblance maybe others (i.e. your family) would. I would take no notice of your in-laws. My mum's family are admanant I look like my English Mother, but my Spanish family say I just like my Spanish Paternal Grandmother.

nappyaddict · 07/04/2008 07:35

eandh - i can see the resemblance between you and both your dds

ItsNotYouItsMe · 07/04/2008 07:55

My DS is only 6 months but there doesn't seem to be anything of me in him.

Then my mum showed me pictures of when I was a baby, and wow, he is the double of me! That cheered me up.

branflake81 · 07/04/2008 10:08

OH says I really look like my dad but I can't see it at all.

My sister and I look absolutely nothing like each other. No one can believe we're related.

scorpio1 · 07/04/2008 10:09

see my profile - ds2 is the spit of his dad imo.

Mercy · 07/04/2008 10:16

Neither of my children look like me at all - they have blue eyes, fair skin and hair and I'm the opposite. People are always commenting on how much they look like their father and his side of hte family - it does irritate me sometimes tbh.

largeginandtonic · 07/04/2008 10:19

Earlycomputers i know exactly where you are coming from! None of mine look like me I have been told (several times) that i must have the weak genes

Drives me crazy.

Fullmoonfiend · 07/04/2008 10:26

mine are both slim like me. But going to be much taller (like their dad).

They both have light brown hair and big, long-lashed brown eyes. Dh and I have greeny eyes, I am blonde and dh has black hair.
My first ds is so beautiful (given he is a boy) that I cannot imagine where he came from - not me
ds2's features are more 'characterful' (like dh).
but they do look like each other even if they don't look like dh and I.

GentleOtter · 07/04/2008 10:30

Our DS2 is a tiny clone of his father and there is not a single character of mine. I like to think that he has inherited my liver or kidneys or something.

edam · 07/04/2008 10:32

Ds is the spitting image of his Dad. Doesn't look anything like me at all although I think he has my skin.

Things can change, though - as children, I looked like a clone of my mother, my sister a clone of my father. We have grown to look like each other in adulthood to the point where people have asked if we are twins!

lucy5 · 07/04/2008 10:46

I was merely an incubator! Both of my two look like their Dad. Seriously though, my dd looks a lot like my sister.

Kewcumber · 07/04/2008 10:50

yes - but for a fairly obvious reason! Am amazed the number of people who say "OOOh doesn;t he look like you" KC - "Errr, no. He doesn't"

my dds are all light - very blonde haired with blue eyes. Dd1 is very much like dh in build - dd2 and 3 are still growing. I with my dark hair and brown eyes look like the nanny.

LynetteScavo · 07/04/2008 11:01

I have two that look nothing like me. They are mini DH's.

One does look like me though but he has blond hair and blue eyes, and I'm dark, so nobody seems to agree, but really he does look like me! A bit.

Fullmoonfiend · 07/04/2008 11:02

lol kewcumber - my 2 boys are always being told they are the spit of their grandad when they are out with him...well that's interesting as he is no blood relation to us (actually, the wierd thing is, they do look a little like him...do you think it's like dogs resembling their owners??)

full moon fiend my daughter has that with her grandad and she adores him he is the absolute favourite thing in her world and they have no blood ties either

Hassled · 07/04/2008 11:04

Only one of my 4 even looks related to me. I'm small and dark, oldest 2 are tall and blonde. DC3 does look like me, DC4 looks like my father did. None of them really look like each other.

Cadmum · 07/04/2008 11:05

I am often heard asking for a maternity test as all four DCs look like DH and his family.

largeginandtonic · 07/04/2008 11:06

Kew i was adopted by my stepdad (when he married my mom) it always makes me smile when people say 'dont you look like him'. I do a lot! Must be osmosis of cells or something

littlerach · 07/04/2008 11:08

Dd1 is like a mini-dh, but with long hair.
Dd2 doesn't really look loke him, but more so than me.

But, looking at photos of me when I was dd1's age, she does kind of look like me then.

And dd1 is reasonably tall, whereas I ma a short arse.
