So what does everyone think about Angus Deayton getting the sack? I personally feel sorry for him, I mean, if you ask me I bet those top nobs at the BEEB who decided to get rid of him are being a tad hypocritical, and apart from anything else, he is damn good at his job.

Nope, they often won't admit it. But get them drunk enough and all their seedy secrets start to spill out. It's especially great having so many male friends as they will often tell you things they won't tell the others - so I know quite a few sexual fantasies!

grommit · 01/11/2002 12:50

Just read that Anne Robinson will front HIGNFY next week and the Beeb hope she will sign up for more. Aggghhh - time to switch off

sis · 01/11/2002 13:34

grommit, looks like Friday nights will be a good time to catch up on some videos!

Lynne33 · 01/11/2002 13:35

Oh no - you're joking!!! Well, looks like I'll be doing a lot more reading on Friday nights!!

might be a bit biased here - but she is very, very intelligent, bloody sharp, excellent at live tv and can cut to the quick. Don't go by the weakest link version - I reckon she'll either blow it completely or be brilliant.

Scatterbrain · 01/11/2002 15:04

Not to mention rude, vicious and insensitive !

Chinchilla · 01/11/2002 19:37

Anne Robinson is nothing like the WL programme in real life. She is witty and smart. Even on the WL, you can see a twinkle in her eye. Don't knock her. (I have been accepted as a contestant on the WL, so I'm biased!!!)

Having said that, I think that HIGNFY is redundant without AD, so maybe it is time to shelve that particular format?

Tinker · 01/11/2002 20:37

Ok, I accept AR is not as she appears on The WL but why does she get so many pronunciations wrong and appear as though she doesn't actually KNOW the answer anyway? Now Jeremy Paxman, on the other hand.......

ScummyMummy · 01/11/2002 20:50

Yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk to AR. Horrible in every televisual performance, utterly and completely vile in interviews I've read... And I'm sorry to use an accent/speech impediment against someone but the way she says thousENT as in "You've just failed to win two thousent pounds" makes me cringe with horror. I couldn't imagine a more terrible frontisperson for HIGNFY.

Croppy · 01/11/2002 20:55

And if she really is witty, she manages to hide it incredibly well. Not just on WL, but on Parkinson etc etc.

Clarinet60 · 01/11/2002 20:59

Why might you be biased, Willow2? (I'm just being a nosy blighter - no need to answer if you don't want!)

Lynne33 · 01/11/2002 22:04

I have just watched Paul Merton hosting HIGNFY and I thought he was bloody good. Anyone know why he can't do it full time? Maybe he just doesn't want the job!!

Chinchilla · 01/11/2002 23:14

I saw her interviewed on 'Clive Anderson Talks Back' years ago, and she was really nice. Stop picking on the poor woman...you're not Welsh are you???

ScummyMummy · 01/11/2002 23:24

I'm not Welsh but we'll definitely have to agree to disagree on this one, Chinchilla!

bunny2 · 02/11/2002 00:41

HIGNFY in not the same without AD and will never be, will the BBC buckle under a wave of public pressure to reappoint him?

roxie · 02/11/2002 01:44

Hi Anyone! I turned over to watch HIGNFY tonite only to discover he's gone!! Needless to say, I reverted back to my original channel - MTV, showing Ricky Martin - I'm so glad I did!!

roxie · 02/11/2002 01:45

Gosh, am I the only fool still up at this ridiculous hour?

Ghosty · 02/11/2002 02:39

No ... roxie you are not the only one up, but then it is 3.35 in the afternoon for me!!!!

Mind you, you are probably snoring now!

There are some others out there on the other side of the world ...

Ghosty
Sorry, almost forgot there are other countries in the world apart from England. I am a complete beginner with chatting so please forgive me. Don't know what I did before internet chatting!!!?! Won't do it tonite tho. Having to get up at the crack of dawn with 3 little ones, I'm already shattered.

I suppose the thing about all these "celebs" who are exposed for drug-taking/screwing around whilst maried/indulging in pervy sex with prostitutes, etc., is that we somehow expect them to be above the seedier side of life just because they're on our teles and in our newspapers and we feel we know them in some way. I think that's a symptom of the "Hello!" society we live in. The trouble is, the opposite actually applies, in that they are just human, no better or no worse than any of us, but they are exposed to much more in the way of excess than probably most of us. We might not know anyone who admits to using prostitutes or habitually using class a drugs, but that's probably because we don't move in those circles. Our vices are sort of "scaled down", e.g. flings with work colleagues, smoking a joint, watching the odd porno video, etc. - or whatever - you get the picture...

Who's to say any of this and other behaviour wouldn't escalate given the opportunities, i.e. endless society parties where coke is practically given out at the door; good-looking people throwing themselves at you just because you're famous; money being hardly any object and basically, imo, leading a fairly superficial, meaningless life. I'm not condoning any of the Angus-Ulrika-John Leslie lot and what they have or haven't done (far from it - I certainly have my own opinions on each of them, none of them particularly sympathetic!), but they all seem to be to be pretty unhappy people who are looking for what a lot of us (I like to think) have maybe already found - that is, acceptance of your lot, an aim to enjoy every day to the best of your ability and stop thinking that the grass is always greener.

monkey · 03/11/2002 11:32

I liked your last sentence moomin

Tortington · 03/11/2002 16:38

see, i dont think i would indulge, knowing that my career maybe at stake, and i think thats the whole point how can i forgive these celebs for throwing, yes throwing it all away , when what i wouldnt give....

tigermoth · 03/11/2002 18:57

I know what you mean custardo.

But what if these 'lifestyle choices' are commonplace in the circles you move in - it's just the unlucky or ultra stupid few who are exposed. For every celebrity who is exposed, I wonder how many thank their lucky stars it's not them.
