So what does everyone think about Angus Deayton getting the sack? I personally feel sorry for him, I mean, if you ask me I bet those top nobs at the BEEB who decided to get rid of him are being a tad hypocritical, and apart from anything else, he is damn good at his job.

OP posts:

I saw the program live a few years ago - Spike Milligan was a guest - it was very funny

bundle · 30/10/2002 14:01

you're right Daffy, it's all scripted.
I agree with grommit, Jonathan Ross is a lot sharper than people give him credit for (ok - I own up, I'm a Radio 2 listener on Saturday mornings!)

Bozza · 30/10/2002 14:02

Like the Christine Hamilton idea.

janh · 30/10/2002 14:09

I don't think it's all scripted - only Angus's obvious jokes - the panellists can't have a script (can they? grommit?) so what he says to them must be ad libbed. Paul Merton would be great but he's so funny on the panel who would take over from him?

Christine Hamilton? Nooooo.

bundle · 30/10/2002 14:10

janh - take a look at the list of 'writers' on the end credits.

bundle · 30/10/2002 14:11

but that doesn't mean there isn't the odd ad lib

grommit · 30/10/2002 14:25

Much of the program was ad-libbed - esp. Spike Milligan - the show too about 90 mins to record - I watched it the next night and much of the ad-libbing had been cut as it wasn't broadcastable!

Willow2 · 30/10/2002 16:01

angus is scripted - and the whole show is examined under a microscope by bbc laywers before it goes out.

WideWebWitch · 30/10/2002 16:30

I fancy Angus actually but don't think he should be sacked for having sex and taking drugs. Although he's poking fun at famous indiscretions I agree with whoever said he's not a MP or anything that important: he's only a TV presenter! When were they supposed to be squeaky clean? Agree that Jonathan Ross is sharp enough to take over, love his Sat morning show too bundle. But I'm not sure that Nick Hancock is - haven't watched TTIAO often though so happy to be wrong on that.

musica · 30/10/2002 16:46

Maybe Angus Deayton could take over on This Morning and JL could take his job at HIGNFY!

janh · 30/10/2002 17:34

The Guardian website is running a poll (but you have to text if you want to vote.)

Candidates are Stephen Fry, Ann Robinson (wot?), John Sergeant, Andrew Marr, the legendary tub of lard (which will probably win!), Christine Hamilton and Will Self.

There's really something gross about men who feel the need to visit prostitutes.I think he's just sleazy and disgusting. I've never looked at Hugh Grant in the same way either since he got arrested.Angus Deaton knew the risks he was taking if you ask me and deserves no sympathy. As for Will Self presenting allegedly he's got a drug problem too.I'd like to see Christine Hamilton present it.

Chinchilla · 30/10/2002 21:48

I too have seen HIGNFY being filmed, back in 1992ish. The guests were Sandi Toksvig and Nick Hancock (before he was 'famous' The warm up man was Lee Hurst (before he was 'famous'!!!

My session of filming only took about 45 minutes, as it seemed to all go right first time, except for a couple of bits that AD had to refilm. I can imagine that Spike Millgan went on and on and on and on...

All I can say is that Paul Merton was as terse off screen as he is on screen, and stalked off without meeting anyone from the audience. Sandi was very pleasant to anyone who waylaid her.

My personal opinion is that Angus is a very funny man, and seems to have the wit to respond quickly to comments thrown at him, so it can't all be scripted can it? So what if he does drugs and sleeps around. If his partner puts up with it, who are we to say. He presents a satirical quiz show, not a 'this is how you should live your life' programme, so who needs to be holier than thou? On the other hand, I can see that it is not the image that the BBC want to portray.

megg · 30/10/2002 21:48

How about Jeremy Paxman (am I the only one who fancies him?). He's good a put-downs and the like.

Rhubarb · 30/10/2002 22:33

I quite fancied Angus myself! And John Leslie - maybe I have a thing for bad boys???? You don't hear of Hislop doing that kind of thing do you? You could never pay a woman enough!!!!

WideWebWitch · 30/10/2002 22:37

Yep, fancy Jeremy Paxman too...

Clarinet60 · 30/10/2002 22:45

It won't be the same withour Angus. IMO his misdemeanors just made the programme funnier.

musica · 30/10/2002 22:45

I believe Ian Hislop is gay.

Rhubarb · 30/10/2002 23:03

NO WAAYYY! Really? Oh well, can't say I'm surprised that much. I don't think you could pay a man any amount to sleep with him either!

Rhubarb · 30/10/2002 23:03

Although Angus might need the cash right now, as might John Leslie!

thumper · 30/10/2002 23:06

But hasn't IH got a wife and daughter, not that that means anything I suppose

SueDonim · 31/10/2002 06:04

Not being in the UK I haven't been following these stories but I'm not sure about the comparison between MP's/TV personalities. In a recent poll less than a third of people could name Tony Blair while half could name five characters from Eastenders. It could be argued that TV folks have more influence than politicians!!!!

monkey · 31/10/2002 08:56

Maybe I'm the only one old before my time, but is this a world gone mad??? I mean AD, JL, maybe WS, frankly, by the sounds of it, every other person in TV seems to be living this sleazy life. Does no one have morals any more? Do all these people think it's completely ok to do whatever they want, irrespective of the harm they do to themselves, their families, and society as a whole? Drug use obviously invloves drug dealers, and untold crimes behind the scenes. Same with prostitution in many cases.

As Rhiannon said, one rule for the famous, another for 'ordinary' people. The man in the street gets arrested & fined/imprisoned for drugs, TV personalities get glamourised ( if unlucky, sacked) for it, but not arrested/imprisoned.

Rhubarb · 31/10/2002 14:31

JL faces imprisonment if the allegations of rape are true. As for drug-taking, well most of it is hearsay, no hard evidence. They cannot be arrested for having a photo that looks like they are snorting cocaine. And in my experience a lot of men (us women are whiter than white of course!) also live this sleazy life. My dh took drugs, as did a lot of his friends and some still do use crack. I've also got male friends who have visited prostitutes. But they are not important so no-one takes any notice.

Therefore it's not just the famous who have no morals, I like to think it's mankind in general really!

Bozza · 31/10/2002 15:01

Maybe I'm sheltered but I don't know anyone who has admitted to going to a prostitute.
