So what does everyone think about Angus Deayton getting the sack? I personally feel sorry for him, I mean, if you ask me I bet those top nobs at the BEEB who decided to get rid of him are being a tad hypocritical, and apart from anything else, he is damn good at his job.

One rule for royalty/the general public/MP's and another for TV presenters? R

Lucy123 · 29/10/2002 20:25

missed the papers lately - what was the latest thing?

Rhiannon · 29/10/2002 20:30

He's been sacked from HIGNFY, don't know what direction that programme will go in now. R

Fionn · 29/10/2002 20:39

Why did they wait until the new series started - what's happened? Ian Hislop did look particularly contemptuously at him in last week's programme I thought. Although he's been a bastard to his partner and child I don't think that's a sacking offence. And although his job on HIGNFY is to take the piss (can we say that?) out of others it's not like he's a Tory MP claiming to support family values. Who will replace him? Hasn't Stephen Fry been mentioned? Can't think of anyone else who would be up to the job.

Lynne33 · 29/10/2002 20:56

As a temporary measure they are putting Paul Merton in his place, although I don't know who will be replacing Paul on the panel. TBH I can't see the show lasting for much longer, it's been Angus, Paul and Ian for too long.

I know he's acted like a complete knob, but that has nothing to do with his job on HIGNFY. If every bloke got the sack for behaving like an arse the country would be run by women. Now there's a nice thought.

A semi-regular panel member that could replace him IMHO is Will Self - but people on here already know my feelings about him, fnerr, drool, need I say more... Soz if anyone's offended!!

Willow2 · 29/10/2002 21:08

There were more tales of his cocaine consumption and new adultery allegations in the paper this weekend. As a result he was apparently heckled severely during the latest HIGNFY - by the audience. He's meant to be there cocking a snook at other famous people for their xxxx ups, but when his own misdemeanours surpass many of these it kind of makes his position untenable I'd have thought. Also, think the JL situation has had some bearing on the situation - should imagine that JL can't "legally" be sacked from his job on TM for the rape allegations because they are just that - allegations - at present. However, he can be sacked for his cocaine use (well, more particularly for being such a twatted arse he didn't realise he was being filmed doing a line or seven) - with This Morning taking the hard line the Beeb would have had to follow suit or risk appearing as though it condones the use of class A drugs.

Ah, Sobernow - the amount I fancy him diminishes in direct ratio to how often he opens his mouth and speaks...!

Tinker · 29/10/2002 23:16

He has been a complete arse. You can't mock those in the news if you are in it yourself. Stephen Fry would, indeed, be good replacement

janh · 30/10/2002 09:51

Possibly his biggest tactical error was referring to Neil Hamilton as "disgraced", Mrs H really let him have it for that...but an MP taking bribes is a bit more serious than a TV presenter having sex! (Or taking cocaine! I thought that was more or less compulsory!)

But they halved his salary (to only £25000 per programme, how could anybody live on that?) after the initial revelations and I don't see how a bit more of more-or-less the same makes that much difference...

Agree about his arse-ness though!

grommit · 30/10/2002 10:03

I think he is a creep. Jonathan Ross would be a good replacement...

Lynne33 · 30/10/2002 10:15

Nah, not Johnathon Ross, you need someone with a bit of nouse. JR always seems like an amiable buffoon to me. Also, he too 'silly' - agree that Stephen Fry might be quite good.

What about Simon Hoggart who does the News Quiz on R4? Or Jeremy Hardy? Or Andy - forgotten his second name - little bloke with black hair who writes comedy shows?

Rhubarb · 30/10/2002 11:02

I don't think 'Have I got News for You' will ever be the same without him

tigermoth · 30/10/2002 11:05

I think Ian Hislop should take over from Angus. I just cannot imagine he's ever done anything naughty in the sex or drugs line. School prefect from the moment he was conceived.

btw I understood AG would be offered other work by the BBC, it was just his HIGNFY slot that had become untenable.

ellasmum · 30/10/2002 11:12

I think he is still going to be doing 'Before they were Famous' - not really HIGNFY though is it??

I don't think the programme will be nearly as successful without him.

Is it Nick Hancock that does "They Think Its All Over ...". If so, I agree he would be great.

Harrysmum · 30/10/2002 12:19

Has JL been sacked too? I'm sorry to see Angus go. Agree that Stephen Fry could do the job but not Nick Hancock - he doesn't seem to have the political savvy that makes it so funny. Rumour had it that one of the BBC political correspondents was earmarked for it, can't remember which one. Can't think who else would be up to it. Rory Bremner? Or one of the Bird & Fortune duo?

bundle · 30/10/2002 12:21

harrysmum, someone mentioned John Sargent, I think he'd be quite good. Andrew Marr was mentioned but I don't think he has the right tone!

sis · 30/10/2002 12:53

Oooh, John Sargeant would be brilliant - he's been so funny whenever he has appeared as a guest. Maybe they'll get Martin Bell and his whilte suit!

grommit · 30/10/2002 12:56

what about Christine Hamilton - that would be interesting

Daffy · 30/10/2002 13:28

In all honesty I think that probably anyone who can read an autocue could do his job. Isn't exactly brain surgery is it? Have watched the show for years and I had begun to think that it had lost its appeal, not as funny anymore. As for TTIAO....well now that's a different story!

janh · 30/10/2002 13:32

Rod Liddle could do it, if the BBC hadn't just sacked him from Today for making biased political comments in his column in the Guardian - not sure if they could re-hire him in order to make biting (but unbiased) political comments on HIGNFY!
