On the flip side to Gumdrops thread.

I love the John Smiths adverts - particularly the diving one "great bombing".

I want to be (dum dum) Smith's crisps, I want to be (dum dum) Smith's crisps!.... there's more but I can't remember it, I still sing it now though!

I don't think those of you south of the border will have seen this, but for my Scottish chums, I love the Tennants adverts - crap lager, great advert. " Ach, Sir, he's missing half hes heed" ha ha ha !!!

JanZ · 02/08/2002 09:58

Salalex - Dh absolutely loves the Tennants "Taggart" piss takes. But then, he has an ongoing love affair with the Tennants advertising - ever since the "What subliminal advertising?" poster (with a red T). Shame about the product though!

The T-mobile ads with picture of the baby's face are quite good.

Sorry!!!!!!

SueDonim · 02/08/2002 15:54

Yes, I'd forgotten the 'citrus' bit, KS - well remembered!

I'm not an expert on the ads here as I can hardly bear to watch tv at all, but some of the more excruitating ones are for over-the-counter medicines, like cold cures. You have a chap in a queue, coughing, everyone is looking at him and scowling, he's given a little sachet by the women behind him, swallows the contents and miraculously stops coughing. Everyone then starts dancing around and singing beause 'XYZ cures all coughs colds and flu'!! There's nothing like the Trades Descriptons Act here, so they can claim anything they want!!!

The saddest ads are for cosmetics/skin creams that 'guarantee to whiten your skin'. I had no idea there were such things and it's such a shame that so much pressure is exerted on women to conform to perceived western standards of beauty. Many of the mainstream cosmetics brands sell this stuff, such as Olay, Nivea etc. No doubt they would say they are just responsding to demand.

There is, however, one company which sells shampoo which 'enhances the natural beauty of black hair' and doesn't try to get women to bleach/dye their hair instead. (Not saying that bleaching is wrong, btw!! Just that in this context I find the subliminal message that blonde hair is superior and black hair inferior very sad.)

chinchilla · 02/08/2002 20:53

What about Mistrels - 'they melt in your mouth, not in your hands'

'What's got a hazlenut in every bite, smooth milk chocolate for your delight, peanuts and caramel golden light...and don't forget the hazlenut in every bite' TOPIC

'The lighter way to enjoy chocolate' MALTESERS

And, just so you don't think that I'm obsessed by chocolate...'I'm a secret lemonade drinker. R Whites, R Whites'. I loved that advert when I was knee high to a grasshopper!

SoupDragon · 02/08/2002 21:00

Or, as my DH always sings "What has a hazelnut in every bit? Squirrel s*!"

Sorry!

SoupDragon · 02/08/2002 21:06

I've just skimmed through this thread and spotted Rhubarb's post about Smiths Crisps - I have a promotional musical mug that plays the tune to that when you lift it up! I can't remember any of the other words either though...

rosehip · 02/08/2002 21:11

I love the new jaguar ad (what's new pussy cat? - very clever) however i think a sexy woah at the end would have just finished it off!
Alos loved the Peugeot - search for the hero ad.

bossykate · 02/08/2002 21:21

i love the baby's face ads! also "spirito di punto". yes we have one - i somehow feel validated by the ad - how sad is that!

bossykate · 02/08/2002 21:22

would much prefer a jag in the ideal world tho'

SueDonim · 03/08/2002 07:37

DS1's friend has the arduous job of road testing Jaguar's new cars, the lucky so-and-so. He spends all his time on the Continent, driving around beautiful areas and generally having a A Good Time.

janh · 03/08/2002 13:29

Soupdragon, if it helps the original to the Smiths tune was "I want to be Bobby's girl" - I could give you some lyrics for that (if you really wanted me to!)

Rhiannon · 07/08/2002 23:50

I used to love, I am embarrassed to admit but "do the Shake and Vac and put the freshness back. When your carpet smells fresh you room does too so everytime you vacuum remember what to do". Tee hee aren't I so sad. R

PamT · 08/08/2002 07:06

I like the drink advert where the woman walks past all the men to the bar and they all suck in their saggy bellies, then she laughs when they relax again - so true!

jenny2998 · 08/08/2002 22:48

Rhiannon, that brings back memories! That is one advert that stands out in memory from childhood. I remember the tough looking man with the little dog, and later finding out that the stuff was dangerous for animals and being really concerned about that dog!

WideWebWitch · 08/08/2002 23:20

Just saw the Clarks ad with the little girl dancing wildly round the room in cool wellies to a loud song, loved it.

Tinker · 08/08/2002 23:31

Yes WWW! To Plastic Bertrand. My daughter has taken this advert as licence to jump up and down all over the settee, copying her, when it's on!

WideWebWitch · 08/08/2002 23:32

Tinker, was trying to remember what song it was! Plastic Bertrand, now that takes me back! I know the title is French...

Tinker · 08/08/2002 23:35

He turned up in the Eurovision Song Contest a few years ago and he's always cited in the Name 10 Famous Belgians list. Well, not always, but you know what I mean!

Ca Plane Pour Moi!!! Has got to be re-released now.

PamT · 09/08/2002 07:40

I've been desperately trying to think who sang that for days, now I know. I also love the Evian water ad - "wouldn't it be nice" with all the old people on the trapeze and in the water.

PamT · 09/08/2002 11:28

Just seen another Clarks shoes advert, this time to OMD's Electricity. Wasn't there some brill music in the 80's?
