Yes, I'd forgotten the 'citrus' bit, KS - well remembered!
I'm not an expert on the ads here as I can hardly bear to watch tv at all, but some of the more excruitating ones are for over-the-counter medicines, like cold cures. You have a chap in a queue, coughing, everyone is looking at him and scowling, he's given a little sachet by the women behind him, swallows the contents and miraculously stops coughing. Everyone then starts dancing around and singing beause 'XYZ cures all coughs colds and flu'!! There's nothing like the Trades Descriptons Act here, so they can claim anything they want!!!
The saddest ads are for cosmetics/skin creams that 'guarantee to whiten your skin'. I had no idea there were such things and it's such a shame that so much pressure is exerted on women to conform to perceived western standards of beauty. Many of the mainstream cosmetics brands sell this stuff, such as Olay, Nivea etc. No doubt they would say they are just responsding to demand.
There is, however, one company which sells shampoo which 'enhances the natural beauty of black hair' and doesn't try to get women to bleach/dye their hair instead. (Not saying that bleaching is wrong, btw!! Just that in this context I find the subliminal message that blonde hair is superior and black hair inferior very sad.)
